Title: Can't install certain programs in Windows 7 64 bit - Pls help!!
Post by: yamatosoul on May 10, 2012, 02:45:19 pm
I'm having a big problem here and would really appreciate some help.  It all started last week when I tried reinstall Google Earth and was unable to.  I tried various links, different settings, etc., but nothing worked.  The installer would run, but nothing would happen.  Then, I found that more of my programs are either not updating or unable to install as well.  One of which of was Superantispyware.  It was able to update the definitions, but not the software itself.  I was also unable to install two of the Windows updates; Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2656405)I believe the one common thing all of these programs have is that they have to connect to the internet and stay connected in order to update and/or install.  I have tried running all the Fix it tools on the Microsoft website, starting in safe mode (can't connect to the internet anyway), and disabling all Start up items, but the problem continues.  Can someone please help me out with this?  I really don't want to reinstall Windows if I don't have to.  Thank you in advance.

I wonder if the MSI installer is messed up on the system, or is it being blocked by the firewall.

Download and install this as a test (7-zip program that I use). It is an MSI installer, let me know how it goes

Well, I just did it, but I already had 7Zip installed, so, I don't know what it did exactly.

Uninstall it. The see if it removed it. If it did then try to install it again and see if it works :-)

Ok so we know MSI is working, and 7-zip doesn't require internet access during the setup.

Try disabling your firewall and installing google earth again and see if it works.

That was one of the first things I tried.  Believe me, I ran down the laundry list of things to try.  The only thing I'm pretty certain of is that I believe all of these programs need to connect to the internet and stay connected while they update and/or install.

Try the offline installer. If it does install then we can confirm the setups are not getting on the net.

None.  The installer runs very quickly and it says, "Thank you for installing Google Earth".  It never even attempts to connect to the internet.  I have Norton 360 and it seems to be working fine.  The firewall hasn't detected anything.  I shut the whole damned thing off, but it made no difference.  Browsing is no problem.

I downloaded google earth and extracted it, it is an msi installer.

Anything in the event viewer? Have you also tried running my repair MSI?

None.  Do you mean your Windows Repair Program?  Of course, that's another one of the first fixes I tried!  Are you kidding me?

lol
If you ran all the repairs then I know it isn't a permissions problem either. You have disabled any program getting in the way.

What ever the problem, it is deep. And without getting my hands on it I am not sure what the fix is.

When you hit something that is deep, gives no errors and no sign of what the problem is then fixing it is like finding a needle in a hay stack :-)

You do have another option, that should repair it and anything else while keeping all your programs and data.

A Repair install.

I am heading out the door to take my kids out mothers day shopping. They are all 10 and younger. This should be fun.

Be back in a while.
