Title: Doesn't Save Tweaks ?
Post by: rocknrollah on May 14, 2012, 02:13:31 am
Ok, for some reason I get the feeling that Advanced System Tweaker isn't saving the tweaks I enable? Although I run the program as administrator.

The first time I ran it and then I rebooted my computer I could see the tweaks like Load desktop in a different i don't know what it's called, but I could see the message..and now it doesn't appear on my screen anymore..

Also each time I start AST again, and I click the tweaks that I've enabled it just says "Has been done 0 times" or something, the little message at the bottom..Btw sorry for my "something something" talk, but I just woke up, so yeah, I hope someone can tell me that this is normal or how I can fix it if it's not.

Thank you for your time.

The program stores what tweaks it has ran in the registry. And the tweak you loaded to have Windows display what it is doing during startup and shut down (One of my fav tweaks) is also done in the registry.

Yet now both are gone. Did you do a registry restore from a backup at all?

Well, I did clean and defrag my registry, but then I ran the tweaks again just to be sure.. I'l try it one more time..But it doesn't seem to store which tweaks i've ran..Every time I ran them was after an updated version of the program though, so I don't know that maybe the updates reset the counter on which tweaks you've ran or something ?

Updating the program wont have an effect like that. The program just saves a list of the tweaks you ran in the reg, doesn't even remove them. It just adds them to the list as you run them :-)

They are stored at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Tweaking.com\Advanced System Tweaker" under Ran Tweaks

Yeah, but in the program it keeps saying "Tweak ran 0 times" although i'm 100% sure that I've ran it..

Check if the reg location is empty or not and let me know. If it is empty then something is wiping it out. If it isnt empty then there might be a bug somewhere

How do I check that? I'm not a computer pro and it's probably a dumb question, but yeah ..  :shy:

Open regedit and go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Tweaking.com\Advanced System Tweaker"

I don't even have a Tweaking folder so it seems, lol  I also applied tweaks earlier, I just rebooted and yeah..they didn't get applied, also in the program..Tweak has been ran (0) on all the ones I ran..

Very odd, what version of Windows are you on?

Windows 7..

I ran the same tweaks like a week ago or something and they all got applied and worked and now for some reason they won't..

In the program, under the help menu enable debug mode.

This will add a pause command to each tweak so you can see the results. Get me a screen shot of the results when you do that :-)

Good :-)

Now go to "C:\Users\Sam\AppData\Local\Temp\"
There you will see a tweak.reg file double click on it, do you get any kind of error?

No not an error, just that it has been added to the registry

Ok, reboot and see if it holds.

If it does we need to find out why the program isnt being allowed to access the registry

Doesn't seem to be applied..also says 0 still in the program, could it have anything to do with anti-virus programs or something?

Well you ran the tweak manually and it still didn't get put into the system. Seems like something is blocking it.

What antivirus and other programs do you have running in the background?

I had Panda Cloud antivirus running, wanted to test it, but probably going back to AVG or something, uhm, I have Cacheman running, but nothing that should block access to the registry..

I tried panda once as well. I got rid of it, back on avast now :-)

Try disabling panda and try my program again

Ok, I'll try that, btw, do you have any experience with Cacheman? I'm kinda looking for a program to optimize my computer for gaming besides Game Booster and I don't really know or have the feeling that this program is doing much

You sure are on alot of site :D haha, but yeah, the tweak still didn't get applied and I'm getting a bit clueless here, because I know it worked last week..But I'm going to bed now (European timezone), but i'll check in again tomorrow, thanks for the help so far.  Hope we can figure it out, because I really loved the tweaks, when they applied :D

So I downloaded Cleamem and I enabled Auto Run and Auto Clean and I put it on every 15 minutes, but it keeps saying "Last chec: Never".. Does it only change when it exceeds the usage % you entered or is this program also not working for me? Well, the minimonitor is working and it's showing my memory usage, but it doesn't seem to be autochecking  :undecided:

Furthermore, I'm installing Avast again, going to clean and defrag my computer, uncheck all the Auto-Startup programs and services that I don't need and then run AST again, I hope this will help and I'll post in a bit (depending on how long the defragging takes etc..).

Edit: I just tried "Change CleanMem Autorun time" via the menu and it opens your windows task thingy or something and I get an "error" stating "Can not locate external computer", I don't know if I translated that correctly, but it's something along those lines.

Nevermind, It checked, although it didn't start counting the 15 minutes from when the program started.

I think my registry was messed up completely somehow, maybe fooling around a bit too much. I got BSoD and decided I might as well just format my computer and reinstall Windows 7. I used the Simple System Tweaker this time and that seems to work fine. I could see the message that it was loading my desktop etc.. So I think I'll just stick to that for now. Thanks alot for your help and providing everyone with these great programs.

Glad you got the system fixed. Something was diffidently wrong :-)

I think you will like cleanmem as well. I use it on every system I have, even my main system with 8 gbs of ram

Yeah, I installed it again and it works like a charm, very cool little program, also nice that you can adjust almost everything.

Do you have some other recommendations for ("little") tools that help your computer run just that tad bit better?

Another funny thing is that only one of my speakers was working, thought the other one had broken down so never really looked into it. After I installed W7 again, it came back to life  :cheesy:

Just tweaking the system is all you can do. The trick to tweaking a system is to take as much load off the hard drive as possible.

Memory can transfer data at GB's per sec. The CPU can handle even more. But the hard drive goes between 50 to 100 MB's per sec. That is a huge bottle neck. New SSD drives are getting faster (Up to 350 MB's so far) yet still way behind.

So on a lot of systems the slow down is waiting for the hard drive to finish reading the data the system needs. So the more tweaks you do that take away anything needing to read off the hard drive the more the hard drive has speed for other things

So like my simple system tweaker. It has only the safest tweaks I found and they work. Every service you turn off is one less file that the drive needs to read and one less program running that will access the drive. So the less things running the better.

Now that my computer is running decent again I'd like to try AST again too. I was just wondering does it have ALOT more tweaks than the Simple version, I mean in terms of improving the speed of your computer, not options like Defrag at startup or something ?
Title: Re: Doesn't Save Tweaks ?
Post by: Shane on May 17, 2012, 08:27:23 am
It has a ton of tweaks. But more fine tuning and things like that. You run each tweak one at a time.

The simple system tweaker was a version I made with the tweaks I put on customers machines tat are safe for everyone.

There are some tweaks that work for some but not others, like disabling certain service and things like that. The AST gives you the control to decide :-)
