Title: Tweaking -both installled and portable versions-don't run
Post by: bnk47 on February 10, 2015, 08:44:41 am
I have some problems with my computer.

It starts with limited programs running, as in safe mode.

I installed the new version of Tweaking 2.11.0, it wouldn't run. I downloaded the portable version, it too does not run.

I appreciate your help

Windows 7 X64 Ultimate
Processor A10-7850K
16 GB memory
1 TB HD

Have you tried opening a command prompt and running it as an administrator and entering chkdsk /r

You can view its full report in Event Viewer.

When it has read the logs expand Windows Logs - right click on Applications - click on Find (you may have to click on Applications first for the Find option to be active) type chkdsk or wininit and press enter.

Close the Find box and read its report.

See if that gives any improvement.

I did. No change.

I tried "Repair Windows" option. But the error message says the version of Windows on disc is different from the installed Windows. Beats me.

When you downloaded the portable version you extracted all the files to a folder correct? And when you try to run it do you get an error or anything at all?

Does the event viewer show any errors after you trying running it?

I think the culprit was Glary Software. This was the second time that this software damaged my operating system.

I downloaded a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 from the following site:
http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/14-windows-7-direct-download-links
Burned it and updated Windows 7. The computer works perfectly now, except that the update changed Windows key and now claims that the Windows is not genuine.
I followed the instructions from the following site, giving me enough time to correct the Windows licensing problem.
http://www.gohacking.com/use-windows-7-without-activation/

Any good advice?

P.S.  Both versions of Tweaking now work without a problem.

I ran under admin account.

After several reboots, now Windows 7 key is recognized as Genuine, albeit different from what it was before the process stated above.

Glary software found over 400 register errors and unwisely, I let it "fix" its findings without reviewing them. I think it corrupted the register, which eventually prevented execution of some of the programs. When I installed Bitdefender, it uninstalled Malwarebyte. When I tried to re-install it, I received error messages that the installation didn't complete and couldn't write (forgot the rest of the message)--I did not pay much attention at the time and did not save the complete message, a BIG mistake. Always must save the screen shot of the errors or take a picture--after that Malwarebyte would not run. Updating Windows 7--as stated previously--apparently fixed the register corruption and all the programs run as expected.

Thank you for your excellent program and all your help.
