Title: Windows xp services
Post by: HappyDog on March 12, 2015, 08:48:31 am
I am unable to get on the internet because of the following problem. Basically it is a services problem. The services that allow internet connection sharing (ICS) will not run. These services include sharedaccess, netman, rasauto, rasman, wmi.

I cannot get to services through administrative tool because i get a "cannot find snap-in", so I have used cmd.exe and the "sc" commands. Still can't turn on the above services. I no longer have the xp disk. I am running sp3. I have tried the windows repair available here, but I also keep getting an ACTIVEDS.dll error message so the repair won't run. At this point I am stumped. Can't afford a new computer right now.

Sounds like you have a lot of files missing, did you try a sfc /scannow and if you did, did it ask for the xp cd?

If you have files missing or corrupt you will need to get your hands on an xp disk so you can do a sfc. Have you also done a chkdsk on the drive and check for bad sectors yet?

Open a cmd.exe window and put in

chkdsk c: /r /f

When you run it it will say the drive is in use and would you like to schedule it, hit Y and enter then reboot. If the chkdsk doesn't start before windows loads try it again, sometimes it takes a time or two to get it going.

I was afraid you were going to say I need the xp disk. I did perform a chkdsk and no problems there. Anything else come to mind

i will try the sfc/scannow. Question: Do I run that from  cmd.exe and if so, what is the syntax?

Open a cmd.exe window and put in

sfc /scannow

Make sure there is a space after sfc

A box will open up with a progress bar, once done any files it finds that needs replaced or did replaced will be logged in the event viewer.

OK so it is finding files that need replaced, and since the i386 folder from the setup disk isnt on the drive it is asking for the disk instead.

Is it XP home or Pro? OEM, Retail or Volume?

I have no problem helping people get an ISO of the Windows setup disks of any version, because I dont have people crack them or anything, in fact MS normally lets people get the ISO anyways, you just have to have a key code.

So that being said, here are some you can try

Not sure if this one will work but it is worth a shot and see if sfc will accept it (Try this one first)

They also have this one, same size yet different file name, both 589MB in size.
