Post by: VicTully on March 13, 2015, 12:26:26 pm
I am trying to update the system on my IBM R51 Think Pad to Windows, but I cannot find a video driver. I have searched the net but haven't found anything.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!

that should do it for you.

Thanks for helping jpm :-)

I see that link points to Windows XP drivers, what version of Windows are you installing? And looks like the video is ATI so you should be able to pull some legacy drivers from ati webstie as well

Yes, the AMD auto detect should give the correct ones.

My subject line has "Windows 7" in it. I neglected to put it in the body of the e-mail. I am sorry for not putting it there. Thanks for everything so far. I will check those mentioned so far and report back.

Thanks again.

The site mentioned above does not list a video driver for Vista or Windows 7. I was hoping someone had found another driver that did work, even though it is not lsited. I have seen that happen before.

Thanks again.

Forgot to add the AMD link for auto detect and install - http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Edit - Did your machine original come with Win 7 or have you upgraded from XP as I don't see any Win 7 drivers on http://www.driverslib.com/Notebook/IBM/ThinkPad-R51.html

Although I'm not sure what that Universal update one is.

The machine came with XP. I am upgrading to Windows 7 to be more secure. I am going to upgrade all my machines to 7, if possible. If I can't do this one I may put a version of Linux on it, but I am not going back to XP. I also have a Think Pad T60 to do next.

I wish to thank all those that have tried to help. I know I can come here and get the right answers, not a bunch of dead ends, Thanks again.

Before you upgrade to Win 7 you will need to run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor on each machine. http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=20

Win 7 x32 will only recognise up to 4GB RAM whereas the 64 bit version can handle a lot more - forget how much now as I believe it's version dependent, but the max RAM you can fit is also dependent on what the motherboard can take and Crucial's Scanner will tell you that. http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en

While Win 7 x 32 bit can run on 1GB RAM and Win 7 x64 bit on 2GB, doubling up on those for each will be a better option for performance.

And when you are ready, this article may be of use and hope it works out for you. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7#T1=tab01

Boggin,

Thanks for your excellent suggestions. Unfortunately, I already have Windows 7 on the R51. I didn't backup the XP version. Normally, someone has found a different driver that has worked on the machine in question, even though it is not listed as being one that would work on the OEM site.

I was hoping to find that on the net somewhere, but no luck so far.

Thanks again,

vic

You can still run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor and it should show if there are any compatibility problems.

Sometimes there just aren't any drivers for the upgrade.

Does the machine boot up okay into Safe Mode with Networking ?

You could try that AIO Universal Installer Driver Update for Win 7 etc. to see what that one has, but create a restore point first. http://www.driverslib.com/Notebook/IBM/ThinkPad-R51.html

It boots up fine. I tried the AIO and that did not work. I found something else late last night, which I am going to try tonight if our friends & family leave. LOL!

I will post progress ASAP.

Thanks again.

Ha! I totally missed that one, I am so use to reading the post and not the subject line lol

Did you also check Windows updates to see if it offered any drivers for the video? I have Windows 7 updates offer ATI drivers for a lot of the ATI cards.

No problem, Shane. I have a few things still to try. Where are these Win 7 updates you have for the ATI cards? I will check some more and get back to you after I try the few things I have.

Thanks for the site and all your help.

If Windows Updates has anything for your system it would normally come down with the monthly updates - I occasionally get one for my Realtek Wireless adapter, but I've never had one for my AMD video.

Have you run the Win 7 Upgrade Assistant yet ?

Open Windows Updates, click change settings on the left.

Make sure there is a check on recommended updates and Microsoft Update.

Then when you check for updates the drivers will either be listed in the recommended or the optional updates. (Normally anyways)

OK. From last night.

As far as the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. It reports Video Controller is not compatible with Windows 7 and Aero Support is not supported. Everything else is good to go.

Tried Intel_6.14.10.3732 & 1rd637ww and neither would install at all.

Tried 1ud164ww & 1yd302ww and they both installed, but when I rebooted the Device Manager reported there were problems during the install, so neither really worked. These were both the 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller, just one was later than the other.

That's where I am right now.

I am going to look at the updates, but I doubt anything will show up since the Upgrade Advisor didn't report anything.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again for all the help so far.

I saw this. The one I saw was pretty ragged. I just d/l'd the version you supplied. I will try it.

Thanks so much for this. I will report back after I try it.

Thanks again.

Intel drivers won't install onto AMD graphics and as the Video Controller isn't compatible, you're looking at a dead duck - I think the choice has been made for you - Ubuntu.

I mentioned that earlier. Linux - Ubuntu. I hope it works. Not much experience with any version of Linux.

Thanks to all for your help.

It is unclear what the OP's graphics card is.....Some R51s have ATI, while others have the Intel Extreme Graphics 2.

I am beta testing; www.drivethelife.com

there service is FREE! No front end or back end Malware...

often, there software drivers will get you up and running, have you tried to see if that can help you?

good luck

It is unclear what the OP's graphics card is.....Some R51s have ATI, while others have the Intel Extreme Graphics 2.

Google gives references for a Lenovo R51 as well as an IBM R51.

The Lenovo uses Intel but a link provided earlier gives drivers for AMD.

One way to determine what is fitted is to go Start - type dxdiag and press enter then look under the Display tab, but as the Win 7 Upgrade Assistant has given that the Video Controller (which is another name for the graphics card/chip) is not compatible for Win 7, then it's unlikely there will be Win 7 drivers for this machine.

I tried DrivetheLife post by Rick. Sorry to say that it didn't work.

I tried the post by Samson from SevenForums.com and by following all the detailed instructions, surprisingly it did work. I now have video drivers for my Think Pad R51.

A big thank you to Samson.

And many thanks to all those who helped out in the thread and to Shane for the great site.

Rick, the OP has the driver required and successfully installed it.

A quick read of the posts at the end of the thread would have confirmed this for you, and the OP has also amended the thread title to "Solved".
