When trying to open a .zip file in another forum, Windows asked me which program I wanted to use.
I first went to Default Programs/Associate files and .zip wasn't in the list to assign a default program.
There was also a Google link I came across (can't find it now) that had a .zip batch file for .zip but said to right click on it and select SaveAs which didn't give me that option.
When I downloaded it, it was being saved as a text file and opened as such which meant I couldn't use the Merge option.
I've also tried the elevated cmd - cmd /c assoc zip=CompressedFolder to no avail.
Went back and got the which program do you want to use etc. and I was able to add Windows Explorer to the list but when I went to open it after that, all I got was a jumping busy which pretty much froze the computer.
I was able to open Task Manager to end the many explorer.exes and iexplorer and instead of stopping the busy, ended up with a desktop devoid of everything except this jumping busy next to the cursor arrow and had to do a power shutdown to get out of it.
It's as if Windows doesn't know what a .zip is and may be because it isn't listed in the Associate files...
I think this started following one of the factory resets and it occurs on both my Toshiba Win 7 laptops - each having had more than one factory reset each.
The last factory reset on the other machine was done with a bought Toshiba OEM disk, so should really have been pristine.
A chkdsk /f and an offboot sfc /scannow came up clean.
I want to get this resolved so that I can move on and upgrade one of the machines to Win 10, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Default zip .reg file here. About 2/3 down the page.

Thanks Samson - that was another link I'd been looking for but still the jumping busy after merging the file.
On my other laptop now and at least I was able to delete the .zip file to stop the busy which it wouldn't do on the other laptop.

I use 7-zip myself, it is free. I like it a heck of a lot better than the built in windows one.

I had installed 7-Zip but wasn't sure how to point the .zip to 7-Zip.
When I opened 7-Zip I found it had three parts and neither seemed interested.
My biggest concern is that it isn't listed in the Associated files where you can assign a default program to open them.
-
If you have 7-zip installed I have a reg file I made a while ago that will apply all the compressed files, including zip files, to 7-zip. I can give you that file if you like.

Thanks Shane, I'll get back to you on that as I've upgraded one of my Win 7 laptops to Win 10 to see if that resolves the problem, but haven't gotten around to checking that out yet.
I no longer have 7-Zip installed but I can easily put it back on again.
In the Associated Files bit of Default Programs do you have .zip listed ?
-
It looks like I'm going to have to take you up your kind offer Shane.
Win 10 doesn't even give you the option to choose Windows to select explorer and MS's apps wants to charge me a little under £4 for one of their programs - if in fact it is a MS program and .zip still doesn't show up in Associate files..
I'll reinstall 7-Zip and wait for you to get back.
EDIT - I've reinstalled 7-Zip and it doesn't even list that as one of the options to open the file with.
I've noticed of the free apps that MS App Store has, is RAR - is this a .zip opener or am I mistaking this for WinRAR ?
-
Bump.

Does 7-zip work on a Win 10 system at all ? Does 7zip offer a new Win 10 compatible version ?

Boggin; Anyone that gives something away has FEES in other AREAS!
Don't BE FOOLED HERE OK!
MSFT has learned, residual is better than one time software fees; its the wave of the future... hence the term, avoid ten at all costs!

Well, Shane uses 7-Zip as probably millions of others do, just as millions use the free version of MBAM and other programs.
I don't know how they make their money from those but there are a lot of free trustworthy programs.

I laughed at this 10 is pretty awesome rick if they have extra fee's I'll pay for it. why you ask? it's like if I go to a restaurant if the server does an amazing job i'll give them a nice tip if the do a horrible job i'm gonna give them a mediocre tip. but 7 zip works on windows 10 no problem lol and I never seen a fee for it ;)

What I'd meant was when you go into Control Panel/Default Programs and click on Associate a file type or protocol... do you have .zip listed to be able to associate a program with that type of file ?

I've run that batch file and this is what it reported, although it doesn't mention .zip.

Windows Version: Windows 7
Checking for processes to terminate before fixing executable associations.
* No processes found to kill.
Resetting .EXE, .COM, & .BAT associations in the Windows Registry.

I'll need to see if I can find the thread in the other forum which had the .zip I had been trying to open.
If it hasn't fixed the file association, would 7-Zip open it automatically or do I have to associate 7-Zip with that .zip file ?

I can't seem to find that thread with the .zip file I was trying to open - don't suppose you could stick one on here to see those fix its have worked ?

here you go Boggin.

here you go Boggin.
Thanks Samson.
Brilliant - it opened straight up to all of the files.
Not sure which of the fix its sorted that but suspect it was the second of Gamezertruth's links.
And now I've forgotten again how to mark the thread Solved
-
Go to your opening post, select "modify" and then select "Topic Solved" from the Message icon dropdown box.
Probably should be a "Sticky".
-
I could make my own sticky and stick it on my forehead :D
Thanks for the reminder.
-
I've just tried that .zip on my other laptop which also couldn't open the .zip on that other forum and it has opened without any problems even without the Windows Club batch file.
I'll have to dig deeper to see if I can find that thread to test both machines - one with the batch file executed and the other without.
-
Perhaps the original .zip file was damaged/ corrupted in some way?

From the ease in which I opened this one, that crossed my mind but at the time, others were able to open it okay when I was just getting Windows asking me what I wanted to open it with.

I am glad I could to help you  my friend  and you’re welcome Boggin
