Title: 'Specified service does not exist as an installed service'
Post by: jchamber22 on June 25, 2012, 10:14:40 am
I get this message for almost every program I attempt to run under normal boot. I cant install or uninstall any programs. Access to my usb ports is unavailable, and my internet will only connect to unsecured networks. After extensive testing with s friend on geekstogo I have a clean bill of health as far as it relates to any malware issues. In safe mode I can run most programs but still have no usb or secure network connection. My cd drive does work in both normal and safe boot. My sound works in normal boot but not in safe mode. Also, I ran your Windows repair utility (in safe mode, would not run in normal boot) on the recommendation of that same friend at geeks2go but it did not fix the issue.
Any help you could provide would be much appreciated.  I am running Vista SP2 32-bit

Does it say what service is not installed?

Have you checked the event viewer for more info?

Thanks for the response! the error message shows the path requested and the message i described above.  I can only open the event viewer in safe mode and if I look up the time frame I tried to open event viewer in normal boot, it shows an error saying ' The AMD external events utility service failed to start due to the following error: the system cannot find the specified file.

I have not had much exposure to the event log so if theres something specific I should be looking at please point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

OK first thing I want to do is run 2 programs.

I know you said you had it checked out already, but I want to cover all bases

Download these two programs

1. tdsskiller.exe
2. combofix.exe

Run both of those on the system and let me know the results, try to run them in normal mode if you can, if not then safe mode

Thanks Shane! TDSS found nothing. Combofix came up empty as well. Could not run either in normal boot, I have attached the log from CF for you to view incase I missed something

System does look clean.

Something has gotten deleted in the registry and the system is crippled. The best bet is to do a repair install.

The registry is the hive mind in Windows. When certain keys get deleted or corrupted it can take the system with it.

This will allow you to keep your programs and settings while simply reinstalling Windows.

From the log it shows your on vista

Have you also ran a chkdsk on the drive yet to make sure there is no bad sectors?

I did run chkdsk and nothing much came up. I will plan on doing the repair you suggested this weekend. Will report back after that.
Thanks
