I can't get a laptop to auto configure USB devices.
I have tried deleting all USB entries in Device Manager. Universal Serial Bus Controllers is not listed any more.
I have tried deleting:
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\INFCACHE.1
After a reboot it does re-create the file infcache.1.
I have tried inserting a never used (In this computer) USB Sandisk memory card
I expect during a reboot it would add the USB controller. It didn't. Universal Serial Bus Controllers is not listed in device manager
In an elevated cmd prompt (Run as Administrator) I ran hdwwiz.exe (Add Hardware Wizard) It didn't automatically find any missing devices.
USB devices are not an option I can select manually.
I downloaded the USB 3.0 device driver from Lenovo for this laptop (W550s Win7 32bit) When I install it I get an error saying:
"This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software"
I expected Win7 to install:
USB Mass Storage Device by Microsoft
Generic USB Hub by Microsoft
USB Composite Device by Microsoft
USB Root Hub by Microsoft
I had tried running the Intel Driver Update Utility.
I expected Intel to install:
Intel 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 3B34
Intel 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 3B3C
The update utility didn't recognize it needed to install anything.
There must be something within Win7 Ultimate with all MS security updates installed that needs repairing to recognize the USB drivers need to be installed.
Thanks for a great program,

I have had some usb go bad on me and did the same thing, but it can also be something in windows not working properly.
I had a customer who had a laptop with usb 3 ports and only 1 usb 2 port. The usb 2 port was dead and the bios or windows wouldnt even see it.
So test best thing to do is to test outside of windows to see if the usb is working. You can try booting up ubuntu off their live cd, you can also see if the bios sees the usb hooked up to it as well.
Is the keyboard and mouse usb? If so do they work when plugged into those ports?

The USB is working when I boot with a bootable thumb drive.
I have resolved the issue after restoring an old backup of drivers with Double Driver. I had backed up both the Microsoft drivers and the Lenovo drivers. I have learned a long time ago that windows 7 doesn't install MS drivers like it should.
Thanks,

Actually the better way to do it along side that is to just go to the first post, click edit and then edit the subject there and add the words solved :-)

The USB did start working. I discovered the auto configure still isn't working. In Device manager I now have 6 USB devices listed under Other Devices. (Unknown device)
I would still like to know why Windows doesn't auto configure them.
Thanks,
