Title: Have 2 errors I need help with (Windows Repair)
Post by: Article_86 on October 11, 2015, 09:23:36 am
Hi -
New to the Forum.  How do we go about this?  I have attached the second run log of Windows Repair Pre-Scan where I picked up a second error.  The first run only showed 1 reparse file error.  The second run shows an additional Windows Packages File error.  I also performed a registry scan with CCleaner after the repairs and found the following errors (it was clean prior to scan) shown in the attached image file.  - Art

I found the file for you in the missing cat file and uploaded them here is a quote from  one of Shane's previous posts on another thread about the steps to take to apply these files.

First grab the zip file off this page and apply the reg file it in to add the take owner ship to the right click menu in explorer.
http://www.tweaking.com/articles/pages/add_quottake_ownershipquot_to_right_click_menu_in_vista_amp_7,1.html

Once that is done go to C:\Windows\servicing\ and right click on Packages and click on take ownership. You will now be able to copy the files into that folder.

I have attached the missing files, extract the files out of the attached zip file and put them in the C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\ folder.

Then run my pre-scan again, put a check on the box to have it add the cat files back to the database.

Julian -

I should have told you that I have Hidden Certain Updates.  Does this change anything regarding these errors?  They are shown in the attached image.  I will wait to hear your advise before I continue ... don't want to make things worse.  In fact, I'm going to run WR once more, as I have recently accepted 2 updates regarding Update Client that I have had blocked.  I will post the results In my next post (in a little while).  However, the posted image file of Hidden Updates is current.   The whole purpose of this was to remain free of all Win 10-like tracking or prep files.  - Art

OK Julian -
I installed 2 Windows Update Client updates that were hidden.  My current hidden updates are shown in the attached image file.  I have also attached my last Pre-scan log after attempting repairs post Windows Update Client installs.  I don't think much has changed, but I'll wait for your go-ahead to do anything beyond this.  One BIG question that I have about Windows Repair ... does it open the gates for Win 10 upgrade nags, or anything related to Win 10?  I have noticed that after running WR that my Windows Update History is deleted every time I run it.  Afterward, I have to run an Windows Update and re-hide my previously Hidden Updates.  Should it do that?  There is no mention of that within the WR Program.  - Art

Hey you are a 'night-owl' too   No, the only problem that I'm having is keep out the Windows 10 prep and  "no privacy" updates.  I am about to do the repairs that you posted earlier ...  be back in a few minutes.  - Art

Amazing, 'you da man', Julian!  The package error is fixed, just that nasty reparse point is left.  The pre-scan log is attached.  Just a note, I am running these scans/repairs in Safe-Mode.  - Art

Ready when you are, Julian.  Just a note, I used CCleaner to remove registry errors before.  They have returned since the last pre-scan.  Is it OK to delete them?  Image attached.  - Art

Note: The InProcServer32 registry error has been persistent and has nothing to do with WR.  However, I am curious about it.

Yes you can remove those :-)

In any of the repairs that repair the firewall, it puts back a reg file of the defaults, doesnt remove what is there, just applies over top of it. So you are seeing some rules that simply dont apply to your system, in this case Windows media center entries is what you are seeing. you can safely remove them :-)

Hi Shane and welcome back.  Dude, I am almost 60 now.  Made it to VP of Engineering/R&D by the age of 43, had a massive heart attack at 44 ... completely disabled.  Now I sit home alone w/ 1/5th the income wondering what it was all for.  I STRONGLY recommend that you take it a little easier.  I put in an average of 90 hours a week for many years ... just because I chose to and wanted to be "successful".  I had no wife/children because I did so much moving around consulting here in the states and over-seas.  I know you have family to provide for, but there's a fine line between ambition/inspiration and burn-out.  Remember, your family need you as much/more than they need money.  I understand you, man ... just wanted to warn you.  You can work yourself to death ... and then where would your family be?

Enough of the BS, back to work ... I still have a reparse point that needs to be fixed.  I don't know if it's important or not.  Might be from a Linux Distro I started to download then chickened out and stopped it.  I know, dumb move.  Do you think that there might be an easy fix, or should I just let it ride?  There's that InProcServer error in my registry that keeps popping up, but it keeps coming back with a different DLL file ... I can't figure it out.  I search for the DLL name to get a clue, but I can never find an online reference to them.  Should I blow that one off too?  - Art

P.S. - I just checked my registry again and now there's a unused file extension entry regarding MUM is that one cool to delete?

On the very rare occasions that I run the registry cleaner in CCleaner I have the ActiveX Issues box unchecked.

That is because I used to have IObit's Advanced System Care installed and that always warned about deleting anything ActiveX related, although CCleaner is one of the safer registry cleaners and doesn't remove anything it considers unsafe to remove.
