Title: Corrupt system files
Post by: SRoper on October 15, 2015, 10:55:16 pm: Please can someone help me. I am running Windows 7 on my PC. When I run the system file checker I get a message that my system has some corrupt files and that these cannot be fixed by the system file checker. I have run two Dism cleanup utilities and neither of these fix the problem. I've attached a file with a screenshow of the corrupt file message and also a screenshot of the two failed fixes. Open the Command Prompt (Admin) and enter -

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

Which will put an icon onto the desktop which will open the CBS log in Notepad which you can copy & paste into the reply box.

Post by: Boggin on October 25, 2015, 01:16:38 am: That's rather an unusual CBS log following a sfc /scannow as that cmd is supposed to display what it could and couldn't repair.

What was the last tool you used prior to that CBS log as it looks like it could be the result of the Dism cleanup utilities.

Which Dism cleanup utilities did you use as the dism.../restorehealth cmd usually returns Error 87 and won't run on Win 7.

Can you do another sfc /scannow then enter the findstr cmd again to see what that produces.

Forgot to add last time, in your cmd prompt screenshot you seem to have a strange cmd prompt C:\Program Files\US Revo Group ?

That looks more like a file location and I think you should uninstall Revo Pro before doing another sfc /scannow http://www.quicklyuninstall.com/article/Quickly-Uinstall-Revo-Uninstaller-Pro.html

The admin one usually produces -

This can also be caused by an infection, so running an anti-malware scan with something like the free version of MBAM in Safe Mode with Networking may find something.

You can decline the offer of the Premium trial during its installation and when it has updated itself, click on Settings/Detection and Protection and ensure it is treating PuPs and PuMs as malware - you can use the dropdown to change that status.

What problems were you having for you to run the sfc /scannow in the first place and did uninstalling Revo return the cmd prompt to the same as mine ?

To unregister and re-register, run a cmd prompt as an admin then enter -

regsvr32 /u iesysprep.dll

regsvr32 /i iesysprep.dll

shutdown /r /t 00 (which will reboot the computer).

Run another sfc /scannow to see if that has resolved.

I only started doing this about three to four months ago and at that time did discover that there were infections on my machine. I can't unfortunately say whether this is about the time of discovering the corrupted files. I have not idea when this may have happened. I have tried to unregister and re-register as you suggest a get the message shown in the attachment. Would value your further guidance most highly.

If you have a Win 7 SP1 install disk you could perform an offboot sfc /scannow where the system is checked and repaired from an incorrupt source.

This is looking more like a repair or clean install but you can't do either without a valid retail key because an OEM or vendor's generic product key either won't work or leave the install as not genuine.

However, with a SP1 install stall disk, an offboot sfc /scannow may be able to do something with it.

If you don't have such a disk, I can burn you a couple (one spare) and send them off to you - just PM me your address.

While you've said you're running Win 7, you haven't said whether it is 32 or 64 bit or which version.

I used to write out these instructions for an offboot sfc /scannow until I found http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139810-sfc-scannow-run-command-prompt-boot.html

When I occasionally boot up with an install disk to perform this op, I don't always get the splash screen to select Repair your Computer, but instead get an inverse window with Windows Set up (EMS Enabled) highlighted.

If you get this then just press enter where after you can then follow the steps in the tutorial.

I've been doing a bit more digging around on this error and some found that by uninstalling IE 10 or IE 11 from Installed Updates where IE reverted to IE 8 then run sfc /scannow again, the error wasn't present.

I assume updating again to IE 11 either through Windows Updates or a direct download replaced/repaired this file.

I'll still send you the disks, but as I won't be able to mail them until Monday, can you try uninstalling whichever IE upgrade you have installed and run the sfc /scannow again.

You can also run the SFCFix.exe to see what it reports.

The ISO was originally Win 7 x64 Pro SP1 but I removed the ei.cfg file to make it an universal Win 7 x64 SP1 ISO that covers from Starter to Ultimate.

I still needed to know if it was 32 or 64 bit but the SFCFix.exe log has told me that it is 64 bit.

Can you open IE - click on the Tools cog - About Internet Explorer and check which version you have.

If all of your Windows Updates are up to date and you have IE11, then you should have KB3093983 installed.

It may have that KB number in About Internet Explorer but you can check this by going into Installed Updates and entering KB3093983 in the top right search box.

If you don't have another browser installed, install Firefox, ensuring you look at the check boxes so that it doesn't become your default browser and that you don't want to register it.

Create a restore point and if you have that KB installed, go back into Installed Updates, enter that KB number back into the search box - right click on it if/when it comes up and select Uninstall.

I can't remember if that requires a reboot to effect, but open IE again then via Tools and About Internet Explorer, check to see which version you have now.

If it's still showing as the base version of IE11 then go Start - type appwiz.cpl - press enter and click on Turn Windows features on or off and check to see if it gives a version for IE or if it just says IE.

If it still lists it as IE11 uncheck its box - OK then direct download IE11 https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/internet-explorer-11-for-windows-7-details.aspx

It's essential that you have another working browser before you do this as you will lose all access to the Internet as just re-checking the IE box in features may not reinstate IE.

If it just says Internet Explorer then leave its box checked or if you no longer have IE11 as the version in About Internet Explorer, then direct download IE11.

It's one of the problems I have - which seems may be related to the corrupt system file. When the updates are in the final stages of installing they suddenly start reversing. What I should mention is that I use Reimage (www.reimage.com) and their technicians tried to fix the corrupt system file a few days ago. In the course of doing so, they apparently reset my Windows Updates (so the technician said). Maybe that's why my PC shows no installed updates but has IE version 11 installed. So regarding the KB you mention, the answer is no I don't have it. I also tried your suggestion of turning off IE 11 in the appwiz.cpl and then trying to install IE11 from the microsoft link you gave. It wouldn't work - got a message that the installed version is newer than the download version. All a huge mystery ...

It's difficult to know just what those techs did so it may be best to wait until you get the install disks.

You have 11.0.9600.18059 and I have 11.0.9600.17041. This is most likely because of the updates that won't install. I'm looking forward to getting the disks - most sincere thanks for sending them. I once sent some to someone in Rio and after a couple of months when they still hadn't arrived, which was blamed by the recipient on their bad postal service or theft, I sent another set by registered mail.

They got those after I think was a few weeks and then they finally got the first set via Portugal :D
