Title: problems with usb devices.
Post by: bentesoli on July 21, 2012, 01:09:04 am
Hello!
Sorry for my english.
I had (and still have) a problem with an external hard disk, unrecognized by the system.
I don't know if it is a software or a hardware problem.
I think that will be very helpful for everyone having a program that scans all the usb devices and that correct, if it is possible, all the errors or, at least, say if the error is caused from a hardware or a software problem.
My best regards.

When you plug in an external drive I want you to go tot he drive manager in Windows. Does it show up there but it just doesnt have a drive letter?

Hi Shane!
No. No letters, no devices, no at all. The disk (external Maxtor 500 Gb USB) seems dead a part of a little vibration that I "hear" with my fingers when the current alimentation is on. It seems is rotating (and I hope to save quite of all my life that exists in it). I opened the box but , for the moment, I have'nt the right connection cables to try anything.
However I thank you for your fast reply and I hope you may consider the way to analyze in serious way the problems of the usb devices and if it is possible to create a program that may deeply find the SW or HW problems.
Thank you very much. Gianluigi

Do other USB devices work ok? And does anything show up in the device manager for the usb, or does anything have a yellow "!" in it?

All the usb ports work perfectly. The strange thing is the no presence of any yellow question mark or similars but only "unknown device".

Then we know it isnt the USB ports themselves.

It does sound like the external drive then. Have you tried hooking it into another system to see?

Then it sounds like you got a bad drive bud

You should to maxtor (I think seagate bought them) website and check the warranty on it.

However when I have some news about my problem from a technician that will analyze my hard disk and recover my files I send you an email. Unfortunately the problem is it. I hope to save my photos and over all my private archives and the archives of the activies of my firmas, desappeared with all the rest.
See you. Gianluigi
