Title: (Solved)my dvd writer could not write or burn anything
Post by: jraju on March 13, 2016, 05:41:46 am
Hi, recently i have changed the laptop dvd driver and it is optiarc dvd and it was working , with opening and closing. there was no sound problem, which was the reason for the change of dvd.
But now when i try to burn the iso, both by nero and imgburn, i get verified error on both. while imgburn classified it as layouts do not match error. nero says it as verified failed error. i do not know, why.
when i try to download microsoft fixit and run it, it also reported error that it could not and say error code  , says date synchronizing error with international time.i do not know. when i did select update time, it says it could not due to some error.
I am enclosing the nerolog with a registry key security at the last line

I don't have that registry key in my WinLogon but from a Google, 0 is the default setting.

Have a read through this article to see if it will resolve the time sync. problem.

I was puzzled by that error message as well, but if MS says something then I try to see if their suggestion does the job - so does your CD/DVD drive work now with either Nero or ImgBurn ?

This is what I've found for pool.ntp.org http://www.pool.ntp.org/en/

Hi, Ok . boggins.
Ofcourse, while checking international time, it was 2 days back. How, come that it is not synchronized as per the settings.
If the application date is different, would not it allow half of the aspects of the application. Definitely , i will try to do that in xp machine.
i did have the registry key, but i do not know what to do in that entries.

I think Windows only syncs once a week, but it should have remained so unless something else is going on.

What size of disc are you using - I use a 4GB -R DVD and the ISO is showing as 8,660KBs in my Win 7 Downloads folder.

Is the ISO file the same size for you ?

Well, as it only shows as 8.45MB on the disk I've just burned, that would seem to be big enough.

Can XP burn DVDs now or is it still restricted to CDs ?

Are you still getting the time sync. error ?

Hi, Boggin,

It's always possible that it is a bad CD, unless you have tried others.

Have you tried burning any other file to it as a test ?

Been having a Google on this error and while some have reported having the problem with DVDs, others have reported they only get the error when using a CD but not a DVD.

I have also seen it suggested changing the write speeds but no confirmation that worked.

Hi, the same cd i used in xp , has been used in windows 7 with same imgburn version. The burn process wa successful.
I think that there is some problem in physical drive.

As you get the same error on both Win 7 and XP, does that not exclude the disk drive as being the problem or is this an external disk drive ?

I'm not sure what SeaTools for DOS or SeaTools for Windows (which installs on the computer) is supposed to do.

All the DOS version did was scan various aspects but did not show any details of those scan logs and just displayed what the HDD was.

The one for Windows was similar in that it didn't run a chkdsk in any form.

If you want to know about the state of your HDD, then a chkdsk /f or the trial version of HDSentinel will give you a written report.

Hi,
What i meant is , the dvd drive is not working in my laptop. I tried to burn seatool for dos, for checking the hdd in the desktop computer, when it fails to boot when i installed the OS, the problem of which you may be aware thro my other thread.
Now, as i have changed the hdd in desktop computer it is ok. But the dvd drive in laptop having xp, is giving me trouble of not burning any disc. Now, today it also failed to read. I completely cleaned it with writex, a cd containing brushes and clean while playing the audio.
The problem persists. Is there any other way of knowing whether the drive is working. It opens and ejects. But today, when i place a cd r having data, it is swirling, but could not do anything. it is swirling and spinning as if it is doing something, net result is zero.

Is the disk drive recognised in Windows Explorer or Disk Management with a drive letter and does AutoPlay open when you put a disk into it ?

When you right click on it in Device Manager and select Properties - what does it give for its status ?

MS has a Fix it for ODDs that don't read or write and the second article gives some other steps to work through, but if none resolve, then the disk drive is probably goosed.

There are both reading and writing heads for both CD and DVD - if the burning heads are shot then while you can still use the ODD to read etc. it will be goosed for burning.

As both Nero and ImgBurn have problems with it, then I doubt CDBurnerXP will be able to do anything either, but you could give it a try.

hi, boggin, do you mean to say, that it should have a separate drive for cd and dvd, to have two drive letters.
I am enclosing  the upperfilters and lower filters shown in cdrom for audio. should one delete these keys i also give the device managefr, where all the controllers show as ide , both primary and secondary. Which is connected to cd rom

Title: Re: my dvd writer could not write or burn anything
Post by: Boggin on April 06, 2016, 02:19:55 am
It's only one set of drivers and the disk player is only assigned with one drive letter, but the innards have different functions.

MS as well as having this Fix it, also had a let me do it myself section which involved deleting the Upper and Lower filters.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us

I'm not sure why they removed that bit from the above link and that is the only Fix it they seem to be offering now.

Is this the "Hotfix" you were talking about or have you yet to run this Fix it ?
Title: Re: my dvd writer could not write or burn anything
Post by: jraju on April 06, 2016, 04:53:47 am
HI, mbif i use this fix it, i get this error. If hotfix is run, i get the same error, but with a request to download some cab files , which i do not know how to install .i synced successfully the internet time. but still error. i have checked the xp updates, which does not show any pending update. a
i wrote a  file containing 400 mb using windows writer. it proceeded well and it wrote with success message. But the result file could not be seen as it shows as cd storage is totally available, as if nothing has been written. i tried upper filters and lower filters, but there were none in the required location at hklm,software,..class and at the required key, which i have enclosed. but one other thing is where as the specification shows, as having optiarc dvd rw ad 7530 ata, the registry keys in the Enum folder for cd rom shows them as  optiarc 7561. what is the meaning of drivers of different no, came to my registry?

i will be happy if it could be able to burn data to cd.
i tried sfc.exe command, and it pass quickly without any trouble. as the OS cd would be unusable for many times, i copied the i386 folder to the c: and redirected the source to the c: to run. it was slow at beginning but after all the updates, it runs fast to finish with no error in the middle with insert disc. i have already done to redirect in the registry to avoid scratching of disc. the main problem is if sfc is executed, it also restores wups.dll from the i386 folder , so making error in future updates. i had to netstop and start the service to restore the wups2.dll to get the present updates.pl boggin, julian samson for solutions

AVast, even if i disabled for the session totally, i am getting the same error. Moreover, i have solved the windows update in windows xp laptop ,by disabling the avast totally, as it will also attempt to access the same file resulting in windows update failure. once, i disabled the windows update was successfully to the latest.
but the fixit and hot fix does not work. Boggins, would be that the links are there with broken link at microsoft end.
how to use cab file to extract to install.

Hi, Shane, Boggins
I also tried your cd dvd fix. But the problem has not gone still.
I also surfed the net and the upperfilter and lowerfilters are present in Class filter group in HKLM. But there was no class filters present in the hklm in the said registry key . But i have got the filters in  device drivers in some other place in hklm in Enum folder in the ide items. Can i safely delete those upperfilters and lowerfilters. Upperfilters have Redbook while the lowerfilters have imapi. Both are found to be microsoft drivers. Can i delete those entries.
But all the tutorial is about class filters . There are no such entries in my registry in the laptop. There was also a item of interest cdrom.inf, what is that. i could open, and found it contains some burning programs and dvd cd manufacturerers name of those prevalent at the older time.
I will try to run the cd dvd repair alone to get the log .
I wrote the cd and it shows 702 mb as free storage

I can't remember the path that was shown in the previous Let me do it myself of the CD/DVD Fix it so I can't advise one way or the other whether to delete those keys or not.

However, you could create a restore point or system image, delete the keys and see if that works, but as the disk player works okay on DVDs then I would suspect the fault lays with the disk drive itself.

no, it is not working on cd r also. the written file could not be seen in explorer. But when inserted in other computer having win seven, it shows the burnt files folder, but could not open, causing crash of windows explorer. ok , i will try this fix. how upperfilters and lowerfilters are not present in the folder that msoft gives the clue to delete to get back the cd dvd drive to view and to work. why it is shown in some other key in the hklm. in the enum folder, which has so many keys of cd rom. Is it because of ide sata conflict. class filters are default entries of microsoft, when installing the xp, and i have done sfc.exe with nil error. why i am not able to process the fix for it or hotfix or why the sudden alert of error while opening the hotfix. how to extract cab files. is there any way, so that i could install the same to find what is wrong. if i use imgburn, it shows as dvd ram plus minus ram.
Moreover i find the device id as the suggested number, but the registry entries all belong to other model. i will try to post the dvd finder log in my next post.
i could hear the audio and view the video with these.

You've said previously that you can play DVDs but not CDs - this would prove that the disk drive is functional - just not fully, but as the CD doesn't work on another machine either then that would suggest a damaged CD.

Do you have other CDs you can try on both the affected machine and a working one ?

As for installing cab files, you may find some answers in these links http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+do+i+install+cab+files+in+xp

hi, please see the explorer as well as disk management view of a new sony cd rw in the dvd drive. It sees as cd rom 0 with dvd on the bottom and online. If there is no media, then it says no media correctly.
the explorer show as having total cd storage, and used space as zero.
i want to be specific in my information that it is a replacement to the origianl dvd that came with the laptop. There was an article in hp, which i came to know that the cd rw and dvd rw would not be recognized in the replaced dvd drive and i have to take the help of hp recovery application tool to get the software for the new drive.
I do not think that it is correct information, as it is a plug and play like keyboard and i do not know how to access the tool in my laptop. i have got hp security tool which gives permission of access of different divices.the default settings is to give access to all the people using it.
does the information shows that the cd rw is recognized or not. pl tell me

What brand of CD/ DVDs are you using? Some burners can be picky. I only use Maxell/ TDK/ Verbatim etc, some generic types can be rubbish.

Most burning programs have an option to select burning speed, have you tried that? Start trying the slowest first.
Title: Re: my dvd writer could not write or burn anything
Post by: jraju on April 09, 2016, 05:45:53 pm
Hi, samson,
i bought a new cd rw at market . It was all sony cds in which rw are available both for cd and dvd. no brand available on rw in small towns. i think sony has flooded the market on the rw stuff.
i changed the burner speed to 4x, from fastest.
The problem is on cd rw, when i burn, with windows cd wizard, everything is fine up to fianlization. But the burnt file vanishes after cd wizard finishes. In windows xp, you have to first copy files to the cd explorer and then write files to cd . After writing the cd should show the files burnt from the files ready to burn with , when you copy the file for burning. But in my case, the burn process is success , but the files writing to be cd gone and re check on explorer shows nothing.
Could you copy the pxhelp20.sys file here, so that i could copy that to the drivers folder system32, and then try it. I have changed the lowerfilters to this pxhelp in the registry, but there should be some sys file to activate it. I searched for this file in all the folders, but could not find it. If i go to cd , in i386 folder, all the files in windows compressed form.
If you could provide the file, i could try that fix totally.
It is not that i am persisting on using this dvd. I am having Sony optiarc dvd rw ad 7530 ata, and no problem in audio and video. only on burning files. Nero burnt successfully, but on explorer it shows as nothing as burnt and total cd space available.
i have writex cd lens cleaner and i also cleaned the drive.
sfc.exe /scannow goes smoothly in xp , and nothing could be said about the failure.
all windows updates optional , important are upto date.
i also came to know about sony rootkit, and checked for xp cd service, which was not there in services. I have only imapi services in xp, in services, which when i set to automatlic, auto disables itself. It has no dependency services.
imgburn burns, but on verify fails with layout do not match error.any idea how to go about. i tried removing upperfilters and lowerfilters.

I don't know if that will work J, but here you go. The location was C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

Perhaps uninstalling/ reinstalling your burning software may replace it?

Here you go anyway.

Yes . thanks samson. i will try. Because, if it is a fix, then the file should be there in the respected directory. It is not loaded by burning software. It is sonic supported system file developed by sonic or sonic supported msoft. It is a thinking, that our market is flooded with sony cd rw, which is having 4x maximum speed , and also not supported to windows xp system.
samson, one more question, what is windows cd wizard, is it useful or one can remove that . It first asks you to copy the file to the cd directory and then attempt burn.
so, i suppose, it is copying to some folders in c: and then writes to the disc drive. who has given it? is it microsoft supported program. Because, if it is written, it should be shown in the explorer. it does not show. Then , if it is read by win 7 ultimate, then it is said to be having file type unknown and it is unusable, i mean cd r.
i am trying fixes and hope to fix. More over, i tried the hklm system current controlset, services, cdfs and udfs services. If you see those, things start type is given as 4, which is disabled at any stage, ie totally disabled. I tried to give it 1 to start the services. But still the same problem.

J, I'd be suprised if copying that file worked but hey, up to you.

The market is flooded with Sony CDs? ( possibly counterfeits?), I never liked rewritable CDs or DVDs, just plain r, single use, seem more reliable.

I never use Windows burning tools, so can't help I'm afraid. I use Ashampoo http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/ashampoo_burning_studio_free.html

Maybe uninstalling and reinstalling the burner would get you the proper drivers and sort out the missing pxhelp20.sys file?

Hi, samson, i will try ashampoo definitely. i do not know its existence.yes you are correct, the upperlowerfilters are not default entries in registry. when i copy the sys to the folder and reboot, nero prompts a message that lowerupper filters are incorrectly entered in registry and nero has corrected it and i need to reboot. i did. and went to registry to see the change it made. it has changed pxhelp to blank and initiated a same entry with 1 without any value.
How to disable windows cd wizard then. you are correct , that i tried to write to cdrw and dvdrw, which the vendors boosts in their product specification, but really it is total failure in cd rw and dvd rw in most cases.
Title: Re: my dvd writer could not write or burn anything

Hi, samson, i tried ashampoo, but could not succeeded in burning. When i try to read a folder in dvd r, it reads without any problem. but , if it contains, say a setup.exe, it does not recognize the cd r. microsoft portable fix it , when tried gives no readable media in cd or dvd error message. The setup.exe was burnt in a windows 7 machine, which i could see that it is successfully burnt without any errors, (i did choose, the minimum nero speed at 16x, for copycd.
Now, i learn that there are problems, that may occur, in reading the general files, playing music, video and mixed contents, and all need separate fixes. Is it correct?
i removed the upperlower filters in the registry, but the problem perisists. Now i definitely know that it is a setting missing.
my query is , as window os consist of gui, it needs separate fix in the registry. Would not it auto detects the media.
dvd r could be read, but not cd...
leaving cd rw and dvd rw, not what is the problem

hi, samson and boggins,
Disc recording software applications that come with HP and Compaq computers are made to recognize only the original CD/DVD drives that come with the computer. If you have added a new drive, use the disc burning software that came with the drive or use the native burning capabilities of Windows.

this is one of the quote in hp link. what does that mean. If i replace the dvd drive due to some problem and buy and replace the drive, would it not recognize.
But strange, it reads the folders in already burnt dvd r? i will be trying to fix the problem with all your ideas

Hi, Julian, correct date and time as per my place in India. Samson, if it works for your xp, system, then it should work for me also, if dates are synced? if suppose, i run hotfix, from msoft email, it also gives the same error, but with some solution. If it is clicked then, i was allowed to save a cab file in xp? i have checked sfc.exe /scannow commands and it runs smoothly.
i do not have any virtual drive at present in xp and it only has one dvd drive. if a folder could be read by the drive, why not other media?. is removing upperlower filters .
imapi services always stopping, even when it is made automatic in services.msc.  all the discs not recognized by xp , could be read and write in windows xp system.

sub question.
Hi, in windows xp, if you insert blank cd or dvd, there is no popup to choose between live format and master format, whereas it is available in win 7. So, my doubt is , the cd or dvd written by windows 7, which is specific formatted, is not readable in windows xp, which does not prompt you to select the format.
or is it that it chooses the required format automatically. Then how to workaround this problem.
or my presumption is incorrect?

"The Online status occurs when a basic or dynamic disk is accessible and has no known problems. This is the normal disk status. No user action is required." From Microsoft.

A few final suggestions....

Have you tried running the Fixit that I included in an attached zip file offline, ie not connected to the internet?

Have you tried uninstalling, and reinstalling the device to be sure that the correct drivers are loaded? Also physically removing and reseating the drive to ensure all connections are good.

In a previous post you mentioned HP/ Compaq, it may be that the drive requires specific drivers for your laptop, or a firmware update may be available from HP/ Compaq for it. Have you searched HP support for that? Look under the model number for your machine.

Failing all of the above it could just be a hardware failure.

Have you tried uninstalling the drive and reinstalling the generic Windows drivers? (My old DELL latitude just uses them).

Have you physically removed/ reseated the drive? checked the connectors?

Will it play any commercially released CDs/ DVDs? Music, films etc.

i checked the commercial. there is  no problem in recognition of audio, dat cds, video dvd, it plays in media player classic and not in windows media player.

That is normal for video DVD in windows media player if you don't have codecs installed.

I have searched around and that model of DVD burner that you have seems to have more than its fair share of problems reported similar to yours, sadly with no fix being offered by either MS or the manufacturer

Have you tried uninstalling the drive, then reinstalling it again to ensure the drivers are correctly installed?
See "Uninstall and reinstall drivers" about half way down on this page.....http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=3764997&docId=emr_na-c00815170&docLocale=en_US

If all else fails then you may be looking at a replacement burner... (Not the same model). Do you really need it? Would a decent size USB thumb drive do the same job? I only really use my burner to create disks to play in the car, as it only has an old school CD player in it, apart from that I rarely burn any disks.

It is possible that your drive is not able to read Live File System, so try Mastered.

Hi, i found one thing. all the files in cdfs format are read by xp windows.
samson, is it true that i should select mastered format, to read the cd dvd written in windows 7 to be read in windows xp.
can i try. I just selected the default format and that could not be read in windows xp. Is there any workaround for this.
why this problem cropped up, and why msoft just ignore so long any idea.
there was confusing reading that if i select this format, one could erase any data and is useful. But i  do not think that anything written on cd r could be rewritten or erasable.
please, why windows xp explorer could not read the disc burnt with in the system.
the top of all the joke is, it allows rewriting the entire thing that is already written on it. on verifying, it ashampoo ejected and asked me to close the tray to verfiy the data. when i did , pat came the alert that it is not original cd and asked me to insert original cd......i am trying to find the reason or solution to the effect, and if shane could include a fix for this, it will be boon to users in his cd dvd not working repair included in all in one repair.
cdfs is the older format and it should allow both reading in win seven and win xp. probably this may have forced the msoft to ultimate windows seven, without bothering to address this main problem in the ever greeeen windows xxxp

I did suggest that you try "Mastered" in my last post.

I have no problem reading disks in XP that have been burnt on Win 7 in either live file system or mastered.

Tell me, can a disk burnt with Ashampoo in XP be read on your Win 7 machine?

In this instance I don't think that you can blame MS. I think that the most likely explanation is that you drive is defective....The web is full of users having issues like yours with that model. Get back to the tech who supplied it and get it replaced would be my course of action.

hi, samson,   the burnt files are not shown in win seven. instead, it shows as empty, i mean the regular alert of selecting live or mastered format dialog box. i tried another thing. i again chosen to format it as mastered and burnt a sample file. it burnt successfully and i could read that in win seven pc. when i tried to read with windows xp, it shows blank. i checked the file format and it is given as udf 1.2 version, the format shown as cdfs while i right click properties of the drive in question.,hotfix link , that you have given in your link. if that is working, then i can. i am getting error that i already noted , time sync error. i still had not given up and will try.

hi, i have installed and there is no yellow in driver cd in management. so, the problem lies with indirect entries, obselete entries in the registry may be the cause. But i took care to delete all the connected entries of the original version from the registry , ie entries related to the opt 7561 dvd rw. but still the problem persists. apart from the generic drivers, the system takes the pnp device drivers from the cd dvd drive and if the Os is ide then it has the driver entries, in a separate folder called enum, ide, ie, hklm, system, class, and guide value in,enum folder, which has some established entries, other than the one at class folder guid entries.
your cdrom.inf tallies with my system , as otherwise, i may have drivers shown as error, yellow exclamation mark in the device manager.
sony site has some drivers for some of the version and optiarc , is a product of sony nec, they do not bother to supply the drivers. i searched sony site, but could not get any drivers. still working on this problem and hope to find the solution

Drivers? Are you sure, more likely to be a device ID from PnP.

Have you run Shane's Hardware ID? Then Google the device ID for drivers that others are using, my guess will be XP generic like you have. In XP vitually all DVD drives use OS drivers, I've never come across one that does n't.

You will find nothing on the Sony site, such as firmware updates or drivers as the replacement that you have is OEM, probably pulled from an old machine by the tech, so its history is unknown.

I admire your persistence, but think replacement is probably your only solution.

Hi, samson,
please see the attaachment to get any clue on the error.
Pl see the enclosed files from dvddisaster progress. It scanned 327680 sectors of one radable cd having cdfs format. It stopped and showed read error from 309456 to last sectors as read error, unrecoverable. I scanned the same disk with VSO inspector, which scanned the same and showed 94.4 as good and 5.6 as bad sectors.
Does that means the disk sensor problem. It shows the last round of the disc as red and in vso logs , shows read error. Ofcourse, sectors vary between programs.
How to check the sensor of the cd drive. Are there any tools to check the same.
My last resort is to replace the laptop cd drive with usb drive available readily .
Are there any limit to sensors  , I mean the number of readings . how could this get damaged. Pl boggins and samson

It is just outside the laptop and no need to fix it after removing the defective.

It did sound like it was the actual disk drive.

It's just that I've been helping someone on another forum who is getting an I/O error when trying to burn anything with it and remembered you were having a similar problem.

It sounds like the burn laser has gone on this disk drive as well.

Hi, May be that is the reason for the last lap of the disc, showing in red....
Or it would be a problem of misalignment of disc with the surface, so the last lap, would not be read or write.
I?O error, is because of something connected with the software one uses or the speed of wrting...
i will mark this thread as solved, as i know the solution lies in replacing the drive or buying new usb cd dvd drive, which is Rs1500/-. But pendrive replaces these drives nowadays as even OS are installed using pendrive, with active enabled, rather than cd drive, which is unreliable and may get scratches soon after the initial use

I think it was the Windows Burner tool that was being used to create a bootable ISO disk and that doesn't normally cause any problems.

Hi, Thank you for showing the lens failure may be the cause for this.
It reads the previous files written in cdfs format. There is also a conflict of cdfs and udf. I think the failure is hardware related , even when it reads.
