Title: (Solved) Defrag program incompatible with W8.1
Post by: Lady on January 08, 2017, 05:39:10 am
Hello again,

I wanted to defrag my laptop (W8.1, shell W7) with O&O defrag free (edition 14.1) which I use on my desktop (W7) but it says it has compatibility issues. It says it can still be run but since I'll also be defragging the C: partition with Windows on it, I'm afraid to just use it.

I can download the defrag freeware edition from the O&O website anew but then I'd have to enter my e-mail address and I'd rather not. And it doesn't say there which version I'll get.  https://www.oo-software.com/en/free/download.html
Majorgeeks.com has the 14.1 edition.

Is this compatibility issue really a problem? And is the compatibility mode any good?

I wouldn't bother with a 3rd party defragger.

Open a Command Prompt (Admin) and enter defrag /c which will analyze all drives within Windows and will defrag as necessary.

Note the space before /

Thank you again, Boggin. I'll do that tomorrow. It's a shame though that O&O didn't work. I really liked using it.

- Try Piriform's Defraggler. I have used the program to move all non-system files towards the end of the drive.

Thank you for your suggestion, Willy2! I'll have a look. O&O works fine with W7 and it really sped up my pc again now that I just defragged it.

I'm probably terribly biased because of all the problems I've had with Windows, but I'd rather work with a trusted 3rd party.

I defragged my C: partition with Defraggler. It says now that it has fragments and fragmented files and 0% fragmentation. That sounds odd to me. I've never seen this before. I ran the program for errors on C: but all was well. Is it okay like this?

- Some files/directory (files) won't/can't be defragmented by the program like $MFT, System Restore Points, .............

Or.......maybe I misunderstood and it's the number of files that were defragged and not the number that have to be but cannot.

How about that?

- No, it's quite clear. The screenshot says 66 fragmented files which are in total 213 MB that still are defragmented, after youtried to defragment the drive. I can't help that Windows 8 won't allow to move/defragment those files. That was different in Win XP.
- What info does the does the "Files" tab provide ?

When I open the File list and do CTR A on the list and right click, I get the following options:

Defrag highlighted
Move highlighted to end of drive
Check highlighted
Save list to text file
Benchmark file

- The question should have been: what (kind of) files are showing up in the file list after the program has defragmented the drive (just defragment all fragmented files) ?

I had taken a look at the files and they're all sorts of files, mostly from my antivirus/firewall program BullGuard and Adobe. Here are a few (sorry, the tabs didn't get copied):

I also looked in Piriform's forum and saw exactly the same problem......without an answer.

https://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=47497

So I ran defrag /c too. Maybe the simple answer to this is that Defraggler is the only program which lists undefragged files?

Did the cmd show all volumes as 0% Fragmentation on completion ?

Yes, it did.

Right after I defragged with Windows I ran Defraggler's analysis as I forgot something I needed for my previous answer here and it showed that C: now has 3% fragmentation.   Are we rooting for Windows or for Piriform?  :cheesy:

- Right. These files are "locked" and can't be moved\defragmented.
- Same story for the files of the folder "System volume Information" on a Win 7 system where the files for the System Restore Points are placed. But Win XP allows the program these files to be moved. A matter of permissions, I assume.
- Yes, that's a "negative" for this program. Wouldn't know if the regular build-in disk defragmentation program is able to defragment those files.
- I use the program to regularly move all non-system files towards the end of the drive and all system folders (e.g. c:\Program files, C:\Users, C:\windows, .............. ) to the beginning of the drive.

- But as long as the program defragments the majority of the files I wouldn't worry too much.

I've always gotten 0% Fragmentation with Windows own tools, but I use Norton.

Perhaps BullGuard works differently.

My thought exactly.

We're done with this one. Thanks guys!

En de hartelijke groeten terug! :cheesy:
