Title: Loading Variables Get Stuck @76%
Post by: oao on May 13, 2017, 10:01:10 am
I cannot create restore points in a Windows 7 x64 system and the writers list by vssadmin is empty. I tried all sorts of fixes from online to no avail.

I have installed Tweaking but when I load it the process gets stuck at 76% loading variables.

Pls advise.

Can you try starting it in Safe Mode with Networking.

If that doesn't work, see if setting an exclusion in Windows Firewall does it.

I am usually reluctant to bother with the safe mode.

I will try the firewall option and let you know. But before I do, what method does Tweaking use to repair VSS? Can you pls give me some details? If it's re-registering the DLLs, or one of the fixes usually suggested, I already tried that to no avail.

Thanks.

I managed to circumvent the problem by downloading only the VSS repair tool from another site.

As I suspected, it re-registers the DLLs, which does not fix the problem.

Is there any point in posting a detailed description of the problem?

I don't know what method the repair program uses but I can ask - that is Shane's domain as the author of the program.

Since using that other repair tool, are you now able to start the Windows Repair program ?

Safe Mode is a method to eliminate the possibility of any 3rd party programs as the cause of Windows Repair not loading.

The method used by the tool is re-registering the DLLs, which does not solve my problem.

I know what Safe mode is, I just prefer to leave it as the last resort.

Depending upon the problem, Safe Mode is a first resort for me to see if it has been caused by something I have installed.

Are you getting an error message when trying to create a restore point ?

If so, then there could be corresponding errors in Event Viewer with a date and time stamp for when you tried.

You say you have tried a number of things - have you tried these -

I understand all that.

I dk what caused the problem when. I discovered it when I tried to create a restore point, by which time the causing error was gone from the event log.

I will first exhaust all the possible fixes before I go Safe mode. I still have one more to try. But whatever the cause, the utility does not repair VSS, so...

Try creating another restore point and then check Event Viewer.
Title: Re: Loading Variables Get Stuck @76%
Post by: oao on May 14, 2017, 04:04:55 pm
I did: there are 3 events in the log, none of which reference the cause.

OK, here are the details of the problem, where the method used by the repair utility fail:

1. EVENTCLS.DLL and SWPRV.DLL cannot be registered and get the following error
The module "X.DLL" was loaded but the call to DlRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070715.

2. VSSUI.DLL and MSXML.DLL cannot be registered and get the following error:

The module "X.DLL" failed to load.

In addition, I cannot start the COM+ Event System service. If I do it via the services console I get "The COM+ Event System service started then stopped". If I do it via the command NET START ES I get "The service name is invalid".

If there is any corruption then SFC /SCANNOW should find an fix it, but it does not find any problem.

Any help will be appreciated. See if the author of Tweaking has any idea.

Thanks.

I'll pass it on but see if reinstalling the COM+ catalog helps.

Thanks.

What bothers me is that any corruption should be found by SFC /SCANNOW, but it isn't.

"Note: These steps are applicable to the operating systems that are mentioned in the "applies to" section. These steps do not apply to Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows 7."

Mine is a Windows 7 system, so the solution you referred to does not apply. Incidentally, there is NO "applies to" section, so it's not even clear to what the solution does apply.

Sorry - I missed that bit.

I haven't been able to find the equivalent for Win 7 but have asked for advice on this.

Nope.

COM+ Event System has stopped working

Right click "Computer"
Click "Manage"
Under the "System Tools" section, Double click "Local Users and Groups"

There is no "Local Users and Groups" option on my system.

When I try to start the COM+ Event System Service, I get the attached error and the following entries in the event log:

Update: After much trial and error I managed to fix the COM+ Event System problem by applying to the register a key exported from a healthy system. Upon rebooting the system I checked the event log and found the following error:

Trying to create a restore point generates the same error.

So now I am back to the original problem, i.e.:

vssadmin list writers yields an empty list.

I went back and re-registered the various .DLLs per your VSSfix utility. While this time I did not get errors, I did not get any responses of successful registrations, which I should get. So it's not clear that they took. In any case, it has not resolved the empty list problem and that is the most common suggestion to solve it.

Any ideas?

Given the current error and state i.e., can't create restore point, writers list empty, can you check with the author of Tweaking if he has any ideas?

Thanks.

OK, given that

* your VSS repair utility -- nor any other fix -- did not address the original problem;
* SFC /SCANNOW finds no problems;
* CHKDSK finds no problems

I want to try the full Tweaking utility, which brings us back to the initial problem I started with:
it gets stuck @76% while loading variables.

I reinstalled it, I stopped all running sware but the critical Windows processes and it still gets stuck. I also noticed that if I stop it, its process does not unload so I must use Task Manager to kill it.

Can you pls have the author look into this and help me out?

Thanks.

Yes, I tried the suggestions at that link -- did not work. I now exhausted ALL suggestions available online.

I need to try the full Tweaking utility, but I can't due to its getting stuck.

Have you tried loading the repair program since fixing the COM+Event System service and did you try putting an exclusion into Windows Firewall ?

You haven't said if you have tried loading the program in Safe Mode with Networking yet.

If this machine came with Win 7 pre-installed then I would back up all personal stuff, make a note of the product keys for any paid for software and the programs to reinstall and factory reset the machine.

No, it is not an option. This laptop works with a USB keyboard because the original keyboard stopped working and there was no way to repair it. Consequently I cannot get into BIOS and I cannot select options on the boot menu because I have no access to the keyboard during boot. Neither is reinstalling Windows or restoring from backup for the same reason. It is a backup machine that I keep for emergencies if my main Win10 computer becomes unusable because of the MS shenanigans with Windows updates and I keep both of them in sync.

This is why I need to be able to fix problems from within Windows. Given that SFC scan does not find any problems, if your program gets stuck while loading variables and then does not unload when dismissed, you should be able to figure out why.

The next best thing to booting up into Safe Mode is to perform a clean boot which may or not isolate your antivirus program and then see if the repair program will load.

However, you can still get into Safe Mode with Networking through msconfig which you would also use to perform a clean boot.

To boot into Safe Mode using msconfig - go Start - type msconfig and press enter then under the Boot tab check the boxes for Safe boot and Network - Apply - OK - Restart

To boot normally then go back into msconfig, uncheck the box for Network and then Safe boot - Apply - OK - Restart.

Which antivirus program are you using ?

You can try a repair install which is done from within Windows, but I'll ask Shane if he has any ideas as to why the program should stop loading at 76% when loading the Variables.

You've said you've run a chkdsk - was that in read-only mode, a chkdsk /f or /r and did you notice if it reported any KBs in bad sectors ?

To perform a repair install you need an install disk that includes SP1 and the COA sticker key if it's still legible.

If you don't have such a disk then I can burn you a couple which will cover up to Pro.

PM me with your address if you're interested.

Thanks for your help.

I have concluded that the effort takes has taken too much of my time. So I will keep the system as is and only use it temporarily in emergencies if my main system becomes unusable. Makes more sense given the state of the hardware. An inexpensive new system to customize to my preferences and optimize from scratch is probably time better spent.

Well go into msconfig and boot into Safe Mode with Networking to see if it will load past 76% - won't take long.

I've emailed Shane about your problem and a link to your thread.

You didn't answer as to whether the chkdsk reported any KBs in bad sectors.

No, no errors from CHKDSK.

I do have an image of the system partition made with macrium, the problem is the keyboard--I cannot go into BIOS and set booting USB first because I can't press the F key. The same problem can occur if I set safe mode from MSCONFIG -- if it is not the pre-selected boot menu option, I cannot select it myself and it'll still boot Windows.

If I could get into BIOS I could configure to boot from USB, boot from the Macrium recovery disc and restore from backup.
But AFAIK that is not possible.

Yes, but the USB ports work in Safe Mode - I use an USB wireless mouse and that works in that mode.

I understand, but when the system reboots does it directly go into safe boot, or does it offer me a boot menu? Because if it does the latter and I must select the safe boot option myself I gotta do it with the kb.

Post by: Boggin on May 23, 2017, 12:23:21 am
Yes, I'd forgotten that - Sorry.

It boots you into the advanced boot options and then you need to use your cursor keys to select and then press enter.

I've had a reply from Shane re the 76% hang and while it is difficult to diagnose, he's replied with -

"If it is at the "Loading Windows Variables..." point then that is where it makes calls to the system to get the variables such as all the folder paths, the current user sid, the machine ID and such.

The only thing in that whole section that does any kind of loop would be the get machine ID command. Which calls WMI first and then the WinNT command if wmi fails. Both of those have loop commands, I wonder if something is messed up on his system that is causing an error and so the loops never end.

I am making an update that I will put out tomorrow, in it I will have a command to where if the loops go over a certain amount they will stop, and we can see if that does the trick for him".

So have a look out for the new version tomorrow

It sounds pretty clear that something you are running is blocking the software. 99 times out of 100 its an antivirus product. You could try to disable it or whitelist us - depending on the product.

However, if you run msconfig. Click the boot tab and click the safe boot box with the networking option and that will reboot you into safemode without the use of the keyboard.

I'd misread that bit earlier about msconfig and was thinking Safe Mode was being accessed via F8.
