Title: after using Tweaking/Repair = permissions / delay connecting to internet
Post by: KR on December 22, 2017, 07:34:28 am
Hello Tweeking,
unfortunately I have to ask for your help again. I useed Tweaking / Win Repair many times without a problem.
Now however - after running the repair in the ususal way without special tweaks and without changing anything in services...
(I'm not entirely sure if Tweaking is the cause for the problem though)

 - all programs ask now for permission befor they start - which is ok, but even CCleaner...? which it never did
 - THIS IS ESPECIALLY OF CONCERN SINCE My ANTI-VIRUS (WEBROOT) IS EFFECTED BY THIS AND DOES NOT
START/CONNECT TO INTERNET AT STARTUP  and askes for permission as well - everytime

I'm getting errors 7000 = WRSVC (webroot service) unable to connect in timely fashion
7009 = Timeout of 30.000 milsec. for WRSVC trying to connect

I have to wait 30 or more seconds at login until connection is established = much longer boot time (usually 20 sec or so - now over a minute.

My machine is in top shape, all updated, Win score 7.7 (win7/64 bit/16GB Ram)

I talked to Webroot and uninstalled-reinstalled = no change

Thanks in advance

Klaus

Amendment:
I also noticed a new service:  -  WsDrvInst  -  which wasn't there before.
It shows no path, does not start even when set to Automatic - "Could Not Find Path"

Could this be related?

Thanks

Disregard - WsDrvInst was an unimportant leftover from a deleted program ... but please don't ignore my initial question

... and it looks like: Error 7000 / 7009 is the main concern

I get an UAC on all programs that I open except my Norton Security.

Are you using v4.0.11 ?

Can you open Windows Repair in Safe Mode with Networking, click on Backup Tools and under Registry Backup click on Restore.

Click on the Restore Registry tab and use the dropdown to select the back up, then hit Restore Now and see if you have the same problem after the reboot.

I'll need this info before I can pass it on to Shane.

JFI - Why did you need to run WR ?

 - no, it's 4.0.10 - asking me to upgrade

- I did the reg. restore ... and when it rebooted into normal the problem DID NOT OCCUR!
I felt a 100 pounds lighter, but then a device driver was installed ??? (notification at taskbar) and it retarted automaticaqlly.
at this restart the problem was back - disappointment  :omg:

- I noticed I have another restorpoint on that same day because in RepairTool I clicked on Reg.Backup at first and then, a minute later it did the automatic one.
So - there is another one.. earlier one

what should I do now?

Which device driver was it ?

don't know - it only took a second for the notice at the taskbar - and it doesn't tell you

any way to check where / what driver was installed recently?
Title: Re: after using Tweaking/Repair = permissions / delay connecting to internet
Post by: KR on December 23, 2017, 08:40:17 am
I probably just figured out which driver installed itself:

WsDrvInst ... it appeared all of a sudden in services without a path ... I researched and it is "Wondershare" .. a software I tried and deleted a while ago. Now. after restoring the registry it installrd itseld again ... and I got rid of it again...so that's suspicious, but does it have anything to do with the problem - after all the problem persisted after I got rid of WsDrvInst the first time.

I also ran webroot scan and Malwarebytes scan - all good in that regard

Sorry .. another amendment:
I completely deleted WsDrvInst from services and every entry in the registry - however the delay in startup persists

There must still be some residue sufficient to attract the driver.

Been having a Google to see what this program is - is it MobileGo which would appear as that in Programs and Features ?

How did you uninstall it ?

Sometimes a program will include its own uninstaller which may be found when you expand its folder in All Programs.

You may have to reinstall it to check that, otherwise you will need to dredge through the registry.

nothing in programs or Ccleaner - already removed everything named WsDrvInst from registry - also in AppData and Program Data

Create a restore point and look for these items in the registry to delete - http://un-install.info/53913/uninstall-wondershare-video-converter-ultimate.html
Title: Re: after using Tweaking/Repair = permissions / delay connecting to internet
Post by: KR on December 23, 2017, 09:27:25 am
already did that - no remnands left anywhere of WsDrvInst or Videosoft or Videosoft-CNet. I had this program 1/2 a year ago, didn't like it and completely removed it then and never had a problem. The two remnants I found today in registry I removed and there is nothing left. I checked twice ... I used find / find nect in registry ... until nothing else could be found.

So - I guess it can't be that ... one improvement though-now Webroot is present / active by itself at/after startup - no more permission neccessary.
However the delay/drak screen/ectra 40 seconds still persists.
I also have my services documented in an excell document - to go back to if I mess up or something changes - all is as always

thanks so far boggin - please don't give up ...

PS: someone at Microsoft forum suggested a clean boot - to turn off Webroot - to see if the delay persists - but it's a lengthy procedure - especially if I wanted to go through all the services to see if one does it. But again - my services are all as always

You would start by disabling all items under the Startup tab and see what it's like after the reboot.

Under the Services tab, check the box to Hide all Microsoft services then note which ones are showing as running before hitting Disable all, but an AV program can reinstate itself when you hit the Apply button - you can check that before the Restart but as you've already tried with Webroot disabled, then it probably isn't that.

I think I have about 13 non-MS services in my Win 7.

Have you checked Event Viewer again to see if there are any new errors listed ?

Hi Boggin,
sorry about the delay
- please see attachment of my startup items in Ccleaner - minimal-always worked like that
- I checked Event Viewer:
I have a custom "Administrative Events" and "Boot Time":
NOTHING anymore in AdminEvents (Error7000/7009 gone!!)
but ... still almost 70 seconds in boot time...?? normally 20 sec.

I'll wait a bit for a possible response and will later go through the clean boot procedure

Hi Boggin,
I have to apoligize - I scheduled a Chkdsk and forgot about it / or didn't click Y for yes - that was the reason for Erro 11 - disk.
I have to take a brake - will do the clean boot tonight and post agai tomorrow

Thanks for now

just to confirm:
- webroot loads at startup - no more permission - = good
- chkdsk = all good
- sfc scannow = all good
- NO errors

but boot time app 70 sec.

if you are off for Christmas - Merry Christmas - I'll post tomorrow hopung the ticket will not expire

Cheers - thanks for your time

From 20 secs to 70 is quite a jump - are you using a SSD as I've never heard of Win 7 booting that quick with a HDD.

I usually get 5 consecutive Error Disk 11 when I plug a certain external HDD in to create a system image, but as far as I know, it doesn't corrupt the saved image.

Download the trial version of HDSentinel, remembering to uninstall it when done as it has a 30 day clock.

While it will give a written report on the status of any connected disks, see what the S.M.A.R.T. reports for it.

On another laptop, a chkdsk and other 3rd party programs gave an internal HDD a clean bill of health, but HDSentinel was sounding the death knell for it so I decided to replace it rather than take a chance.

https://www.hdsentinel.com/hard_disk_sentinel_trial.php

Hit the Download link in the left pane and select Save.

You can extract the .zip in your Downloads folder and then run the application.

Having uninstalled it when done, you can continue to load it from there as and when you want to check.

yes - SSD (20 - 25 sec.) - only for system - all personal on HDD(F) - my documents etc all moved to F-Drive

please see previous post - Error 11 was my fault - I scheduled a chkdsk but forgot to click Y or something
no errors now ..  at least that's what I think it was - I also had an external hardrive (Seagate) connected for a while to check on the date of my latest system image - I'll do that again to see if that was the Error 11.

Otherwise: I have no idea what you mean with HDSentinel ...? lets not forget - the only problem I have is the extended startup time

just to confirm:
- webroot loads at startup - no more permission - = good
- chkdsk = all good
- sfc scannow = all good
- NO errors

however - 60 - 70 sec. startup!!!dark screen after initial loading, just after login - only see cursor

All of my ext. drives are Seagate.

HDSentinel is just an additional check on the status of your SSD.

Was it still a slow boot up with Webroot uninstalled ?

Good morning,
I haven't done the clean boot yet, but I stopped/disabled Webroot (there is an option for that)and restarted - same thing.

and again-no error 7000/7009 pointing to webroot anymore. No errors, no warnings at all.
I have printed out instructions for a clean boot, with disabling all non Win services etc, to find out if one of them
could be the culprit... unless you have better instructions / tips what to do at a clean boot.
I'm not a tech guy and rely havily on advice.
I guess at this point - should I do another Reg backup? Maybe a new system image - just in case I screw simething up.
 Thanks

another thought:
I know there is something like waiting time at startup and shutdown...

could it be that by using tweaking/Repair it was set to a longer time out at startup?

... and that the webroot issue was just coincidental - since I just renewed?

because everything is fine now / np errors, except extra time at startup

Thanks

I've run WR on two Win 10 laptops and it hasn't altered my boot up times.

It's been a while since I ran it on my Win 7 laptop - probably because I don't use it much these days.

When you boot up, an AV program can check the files and may not release them in a timely fashion, which is why I was wanting to know if you had the same slow boot with Webroot uninstalled.

Hi Boggin,
I know it's Christmas ... so just for the next time you check
 - I did clean boot - all non-windows items disabled (had only 4 enabled anyways) - no difference
 - did regular bootup (all enabled)  - no difference
 - then I tried boot diagostic option - total desaster - wouldn't startup at all anymore - black screen with cursor forever - no login window
 - got it back to before by F8 > last known boot configuration

- still the delay of 30-40 seconds befor login - webroot now does not start  / permission again...?

shoud I run WR again - if yes, which items to exclude? ... or just the steps before WR?

Thanks

@ KR & Boggin, apologies for butting in or your ongoing diagnosis  :shy:

I came across this earlier while searching for something else and wondered if perhaps this may be the issue? Do you use a solid colour desktop background?

I use a custm made background on dual monitors - never a problem
It's just a very neutral sandy / textures gray background that I created myself.

May be worth a quick try with an "image" instead?

I just tried the fix recommended in the link you provided - I don'y have that entry!!!!!!!???????

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Double-click the DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout entry.

Not there!!

And: what do you mean by an image - my background is a jpg image

Thanks

Also - how can I get this entry into my registry - why is it missing?

After taking a registry backup first.

You would need to create a new DWORD DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout and set the value to 5

BUT Hold fire and let Boggin review my suggestion first....I bow to his superior knowledge.

Thanks - yes  - please Boggin, let me know how to get this enrty back into registry - I remember years ago to have it changed to low seconds - even though I have a jpg image as background. It is a good chance to fix my problem.

I already researched: in group policy you can set / introduce a new / missing key ... just need to get specific instructions.
In the mean time I'll make another system image / reg backup

Thanks

Thanks for your work on this, Samson.

As I just use laptops, this solid colour background is new to me and I don't know why WR should have changed things.

For me the simplest solution would be to get rid of it and see if your boot time returns as well as Webroot not needing permission and then set it up again, but to create that registry entry, go Start - type regedit and press enter - accept the UAC and expand -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies then right click on the name System and select New/DWORD (32-bit) Value

You will now see a box with New Value in it.

Type in there DelayedDesktopSwitchTimeout and press enter.

Right click on that key and select Modify and then change the Value Data from 0 to 5 and click on OK.

Close up the registry sections - File/Exit and restart to effect the change.

I've created that key on my Win 7 laptop and I don't think it's very happy with it as when I went back into the registry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE was expanded even though I closed up all of the sections and it's still expanded after I'd deleted it - but did you try the Hotfix ?

The Group Policy Editor (gpedit.exe) is only available on Windows versions above Home Premium although it can be enabled on Home Premium but you would need to get the required gpedit cmds for whatever you want to do from Google searches.
