Hello;
I have a W10 PRO machine that runs fine and will shutdown, however, it WILL NOT restart -- always hangs and I have to power down via the power button.
It also fails to install some updates -- I get the infamous 0x80073712 error.
I tried the DISM command, but get an error in the log that the "component store is corrupt".
So... I downloaded tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio_setup.exe and installed.
1) The pre-check ran fine with no errors.
2) I did a "proper" reset.
3) I with check the file system -- it recommended that I restart the machine in SAFE mode with NETWORKING.
OK... the machine hung (as it always does). Upon powering back up it goes right back into W10 with the standard login screen.
Does anyone know how to fix this reboot problem?

If the component store is corrupt then you may need to do a repair install which doesn't affect your personal stuff or installed programs, but try these cmds before running the dism /restorehealth or the sfc /scannow.
dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
If this reports that the system is repairable then run -
dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
and then -
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
You can then see if a sfc /scannow reports corruption.
A sfc /scannow should resolve that update error if it can repair all files.
As for the machine not restarting, go into Power Options and set the machine never to sleep.
Click on Additional power settings on the right then click on Choose what closing the lid does then on Change settings that are currently unavailable and uncheck the box for fast start-up and Save changes and then see how it restarts.
For some reason these can cause your symptoms on some machines.
Been having a Google on this restart problem and found where someone had found that the cmd bcdboot C:\windows would permanently resolve it as well, although that was for an UEFI BIOS.

Oy!!! Been locked put for the past few days.
Thanks for the help.
Tried your suggestions -- nothing worked.
Had to re-install W10-PRO from a downloaded .iso on a USB drive.

Sorry to hear about that - obviously things had gotten worse.
Hope you didn't lose too much stuff or did you have personal stuff backed up ?

Personal data was backed up. Had to re-install several program though.
Thanks.

That's good to hear - it's surprising how many don't make back ups.
I create images using Macrium Reflect Free where you need to boot up with a Macrium WPE disk - it may be worth looking into creating full images which would negate the need for a clean install and all that goes with it.
While I don't have a lot of personal stuff on my machines, I have docs I want backed up onto an USB Flash drive.

I also create full images.
I use "Partition Saving" by Damien Guibouret (www.partition-saving.com). Great program. Works from floppy for really old machines and USB thumb drive (Hiren's Boot CD -- https://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd).
One can go back into an image and restore individual files (how I got my personal files back).
However, I had already restored each of the last 3 images -- they were all hosed with the "restart" option.
So I had to re-install W10.

I see - it's advocated to see if an image restores after creating it but I never do.
