Run a command prompt as an admin by going Start - type cmd - right click on cmd and select Run as administrator - accept the UAC and enter these cmds -

winmgmt /standalonehost

winmgmt /resetrepository

shutdown /r /t 00

Then try the program again after the reboot.

. I ran cmd as administrator.  The 1st command worked, the 2nd says: "WMI reset repository failed."

Nice find - and have you run the repair program again ?

the last command restarts my computer but does not go to safe mode, I can get there by running tweaking.com and asking it to reboot to safe mode.  Am I missing something?

No - if you are in Safe Mode when you run that cmd then that would boot you back into normal mode as you would normally do a restart to get back to normal mode.

You could of course boot into Safe Mode with Networking by tapping F8 (usually) as you switch on and select Safe Mode with Networking and then start the program in that mode.

I was too quick with the WMI repair.  I think this may work: https://superuser.com/questions/190960/repair-wmi-on-windows-7

I have done both of the above, the problem remains.  Still hanging at #5 of 43, after having repaired the WMI and rebuilt it.

I'll pass this on to my Support, but what did the chkdsk /r report ?
Title: Re: Tweaking.com runs for 13 hours, stuck on #5 of 43
Post by: selster on April 28, 2018, 01:23:43 pm
both ran, fine.  I have run chkdsk several times.  Each time, in pass 1, it finds and fixes some 95 reparse(?) errors.  therefore, I have backed up by HD and am getting ready to clone it.  When I run tweaking.com, something goes wrong.  And I have to run chkdsk /f again.  I can do certain things in win 7, now, browse, for instance, but some software such as ccleaner won't work.  A cmd command such as taskkill will not work.  Thank you.  tweaking is a great program.  Would really love to see it work.

Can you reinstall the repair program should it have become corrupt.

If that works then run Step 2 and see what that reports for the Reparse points etc. - that has a repair function.

Did the chkdsk report any KBs in bad sectors ?

Can you try the reinstall in Safe Mode with Networking and check to see if Event Viewer has anything recorded.

Can you also see if Novabench will install to see if you have a wider problem - https://novabench.com/download

MS has a fixer for when programs cannot be installed which may be worth downloading and running -

tweaking.com installed in safe mode, but when it loads, it stops at policy_cleanup.ext, and freezes.  I don't know what event viewer is.  And am trying the 2 other downloads you suggested.  Thanks, Steve

Event Viewer is a record of various events that occur on your computer.

Go Start - type eventvwr and press enter.

When it opens ensure Event Viewer (Local) is highlighted in the left pane - if it isn't then click on it.

When it has read the data and you see Critical, Error etc. click on the name Error then on View All Instances of This Event in the lower right pane.

Each error is date and time stamped so that you can click on whatever has occurred as and when and then more info will appear in the lower pane.

Generally you would Google for the source and Event ID number to find a possible fix for the problem - some work - some don't.

This means there is something seriously wrong with your system.

He won't contact you but will come onto the forum to have a look at your thread and offer his advice but with it being a weekend, you may have to wait a couple of days.

You haven't answered if the chkdsk reported any KBs in bad sectors.

Can you run a chkdsk /r and check again.

each time I have run chkdsk /f, I have see repaired bad reparse somethings.  I have never see bad sectors. Last night, I did a system restore.  I can now run dos batch files. I want to see if I can run tweaking.com.  The program is now running, and I am doing step 2, a pre-scan.  Ccleaner will now load and scan the registry.  There is still a program that I can't uninstaller: VueMinder.

I had considered a restore point but sometimes they can leave you in limbo, so decided against it, but glad yours have worked.

Most programs have their own Uninstaller, but can be difficult to uninstall when one or more of its files are open.

The workaround then is to try the uninstall in Safe Mode where those files will not be open.

Post by: Boggin on April 29, 2018, 08:53:22 am
Well at least that looks like progress.

That reparse point could be down to a Volsnap error but could take some finding in Event Viewer.

You can find if the program has fixed it by running the Pre-Scan again but as the target path is missing, then probably not.

Given the date of it I don't think that should be causing any problems if your problems don't date back to Dec. 2017.

Why did you initially run the repair program ?

When it's done repairing the reparse points, run the Pre-Scan again.

I stopped the program, tried to run it again to get to fix reparses.  but the program got stuck loading on a .txt file.  I think it is pretty clear that stopping the program damages something.
Title: Re: Tweaking.com runs for 13 hours, stuck on #5 of 43
Post by: Boggin on April 29, 2018, 01:03:06 pm
When the program gets stuck then you can close it.

Can you use your restore points again and see if the program will open to run the Pre-Scan again.

The program does do an auto registry back up prior to running the repairs, but if it has become corrupt then it may need reinstalling.

Before running the program again, can you go into Event Viewer to see what the latest errors report.

You can post them in your reply any that seem relevant by after clicking on each, click on Copy/Copy details as text in the lower right pane then right click in the reply box and select Paste.

@Selster:
- Run Windows Repair again and make sure the program displays the commands it's executing. There's an option for that. It also means that WR is (a bit) slower but it could provide a clue where the program "gets stuck". And post that info here in this thread.
- Try something else first. Run repair #25 only and then try to run repair #5 again (with output enabled).

Are you using an OEM branded machine or purpose built machine ?

When you say you were unable to get Windows Repair to run and are now running Repair #5 - how did you get the program to run ?

When you're done with Repair #5 and/if the program completes, perform a sfc /scannow to see what that reports.

If any of the missing files are identifiable to any services, you can reinstall the services from https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/236709-services-restore-default-services-windows-7-a.html

Title: Re: Tweaking.com runs for 13 hours, stuck on #5 of 43
Post by: selster on May 01, 2018, 08:41:01 am
1. I left the machine running your step #5, all night.  This morning, it is still doing 1 of 3: repairing WMI.  There is no screen output so I do not know if the program is stuck in a loop or what.
2. What should I do?  Should I let it continue with #5, for today?  Or, should I stop your program and run sfc /scannow or run step #25 and pause the output when I see errors.  The errors in #25 were along the lines of could not find the file but repeated many times.  Previously, I ran sfc /scannow, a few times, and each time got all files are correct.
3.  So if I am missing a service, I can get it from the windows7 site, greate tip.
4. I have about 30 minutes before I need to leave, so hopefully you can get back to me.
Thank you, Steve

I'm just running Repair #5 and it has sailed through it.

If you click on the main repairs window behind the grey one you should see activity on the CPU.

I just ran it in normal mode and now it's doing something with my Norton security.

You say you had a black screen so you couldn't see any output ?

Of those two boot choices I'd go for a normal start to see what you get.

I cannot read that output pic.

To view the chkdsk log go Start - type eventvwr and press enter.

Ensure Event Viewer (Local) is highlighted in the left pane - if it isn't then click on it.

When it has read the data and you can see Critical, Error etc. expand Windows Logs in the left pane.

Click on Application then on Action/Find in the top menu bar then type chkdsk or wininit into the Find box and press enter where you can read the log.

To copy & paste the log into the reply box, click on Copy/Copy details as text in the lower right pane then right click in the reply box and select Paste.

The reason I was asking about the type of computer is because I was thinking about a repair install, but you will need the product key which is on the COA sticker - usually on the underside.

I can supply you with a Win 7 x32 or 64bit SP1 install disk but would need to know which version of Win 7 you are using.

I am not familiar enough with even viewer to use it.  The picture was taken while chkdsk was running and it shows this text:
#1
6548 large file records processed
0 bad file records  processed
162 reparse records  processed
#2
correcting error in index $I30 for file 9954

I have lenovo recovery discs but, as far as I can tell, they will destroy all data while resetting the machine to factory specs.  I am attempting to get the disc in good-enough condition such that I can clone it.  So far, when I have tried to clone with acronis, I couldn't, probably because the disc has had errors.

I can stop tweaking.com #5 and restart it?

I don't think you're going to get anywhere with Repair #5.

The repair install procedure I'm talking about doesn't affect your personal stuff or installed programs but you will need a product key to activate it during the process.

This doesn't involve factory resetting the machine where you would lose everything unless you backed up your personal stuff - programs though would need to be reinstalled then.

I would like to try your idea, then.  If you send the link, I will download it.  As far product keys go, this lenovo came preinstalled with win 7 and no product.  I believe, but would have to confirm it, that when windows installs, it is able to read a key from the machine.

A Google on that repeated error correction is corruption of your system which is probably why the WMI repair isn't completing.

Can you do a chkdsk without any parameters - this is a read-only mode and is entered as chkdsk

The results of this scan will remain on screen and doesn't require a reboot and where you can easily copy & paste into the reply box.

When it has finished its scan, right click in the cmd window and click on Select all then press enter.

Right click in the reply box and select Paste.

Just seen your last reply - have a look on the underside of the machine for a Microsoft sticker - generally the product key tends to fade on these.

While I don't know about Lenovo Win 7 machines, from Win 8 onwards the product key was built into the machine.

We need to know for definite if there are any bad sectors on the HDD.

EDIT - Just had a look at that link and that looks great for retrieving the product key.

I'm shooting off to do my evening meal now.

Forget about the Windows Repair program for now.

When you have the product key, press the Windows key+r and type Slui 3 then press enter where you will be prompted to enter that key.

This will change the product key from Lenovo's generic key which won't be accepted in a repair install.

My Win 7 is Win 7 x64 Home Premium SP1

Can you post your version - you can check what you have by going Start - right click on Computer and select Properties.

You will need to PM me your address and I'll get a couple of install disks sent off to you - one spare.

Don't post your address in the open forum.

To send me a PM click on My Messages and select Send a message and address it to Boggin

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get out to post them tomorrow but will definitely be able to on Thursday.

I'll go through the procedure for a repair install later.

H have win 7 professional. I have a win 7 prof CD, from microsoft.  I just don't know how to use it, for repair only, that is not to reinstall windows and by the way delete everything on the HD.  It's in it's envelope and has a serial number.  Could I somehow use this.  Lenovo has it's own software to download requisite drivers.

Those errors would appear to be the corruption that's causing your problems.

I'm not sure how that corruption has been caused.

It could be because of bad sectors or an infection.

Download the trial version of HDSentinel which will give a written report on the status of your HDD.

https://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php

Download the first of the Limited Trial version - you can uninstall it when done to stop the clock on the 30 day trial and then use it as and when later.

If the HDD is okay then boot up into Safe Mode with Networking.

If you can't get there by tapping F8 as you switch on, then see if you can get into there through the Windows Repair program.

There is another way through msconfig, but try those methods first.

Download the ESET Free Online Scanner and run a scan with that after checking the buttons as in my attached pic.

https://www.eset.com/us/home/online-scanner/

This scan will take a while as it's thorough.

That install disk you have may not include SP1 which it needs as it has to be the same as what you have installed.

As you appear to have a valid install disk and key from MS, you can enter that product key into https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7 and if it accepts it, it will release the download which I think will include SP1.

Select Save for the download and then you can use Windows USB/DVD Burner Tool to create bootable media of your choice.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=56485

When you've created the install media, open Windows Explorer/Computer and insert the install media and double click on its drive.

This will start the process when using a DVD but will open to the files when using an USB Flash drive where you would then double click on setup Application.

While your drivers may remain intact, it is advised to back them up onto something like an USB Flash drive.

You can find those at Windows C:\Windows\System32 and there are usually 3 folders which you can drag and drop into the USB drive letter.

If needed, you can reverse that procedure to drop them back into System32 after the repair is complete.

For some reason or other, a repair install on my Toshiba Win 7 will not complete and will revert back, but I have a series of cmds that will default a Win 7 registry if needed.

SP1 may be needed to be reinstalled after those cmds.

That Lenovo disk must be an OEM version or it's a recovery disk which will factory reset your computer.

It may be best if I burned you a couple of Win 7 disks as that is indeterminate - is your machine 64 bit ?

Did the Lenovo come with Win 7 Pro ?

The repair install repairs the existing system.

It's good that HDS gave the HDD a clean bill of health.

Can you boot into Safe Mode with Networking now and run the ESET scan.

BTW - Which antivirus program do you use ?

My machine is 64 bit.  I use NOD32 ESET antivirus.

That's a pretty decent AV program but no AV program is 100% effective, although in using that, a scan with the ESET online scanner may just be duplicating a scan with the NOD32, although the online scan does go deeper.

Still give it a scan with the online scanner with the buttons checked as in my pic.

I'll burn those disks tonight and get them posted off to you tomorrow - just need you to PM me your address.

Thank you very much!  I am moving over to a new hard drive.  Curiously, I am getting this error. See attached, when I try to run qGIS, a mapping program.

I am installing Visual Studio, as a way of trying to make sure that all re framework and c++ is up-to-date.  I am less sure about downloading the many patches available for gamers with the same error.

I'd wait until you have done the repair install before troubleshooting program errors.
