Title: Getting error code: 0x80070002 updating Microsoft store apps
Post by: MSRadell on June 18, 2018, 06:42:29 pm
I keep getting the code: 0x80070002 when I'm trying to update apps in the Microsoft store. I've tried multiple ideas from various articles and nothing seems to work. I've turned back on UAC and went back to using my Microsoft Login to sign into the computer (neither of which I really wanted to do) but neither of those changes had any effect. I did a repair installation of Windows 10 again with no effect.

Any ideas what else I should try?

Can you give us a list of the things you have tried ?

Having read your thread in the Bleepingcomputer.com forum and other Google links on this error and if you have also tried those, should it be an Internet problem, open a Command Prompt (Admin) and enter these cmds then check after the the reboot.

netsh winsock reset

shutdown /r /t 00

Thanks for the idea about a different direction, unfortunately it didn't help.

As you can see from what was suggested over there (I actually had tried most of the suggestions previously) I've tried about everything imaginable and nothing seems to help. I really don't want to blow everything away and start over with a new configuration, I have AutoCAD in several auxiliary programs used for design work that are very intricate to reinstall on a system. On top of that I'm disabled and have to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking software to control my computer. It works great I can do everything using it that I could previously however, when you're doing a complete scratch installation on your computer it takes a while before you get to a point where you can use it (or even Windows recognition for that matter).

I'll keep plugging away, I know sooner or later I'll run into something that solves the problem. Meanwhile, fortunately the only thing it affects is a Microsoft store and apps from it and forcefully none of those are things I use on a regular basis.

Have you tried this troubleshooter to see if it's an install problem -

No I hadn't tried that troubleshooter. I had run the troubleshooter that you find in Control Panel but not this one. However I just ran it and it didn't find anything and the problem still exists....

The fact that you've done a repair install and troubleshooters haven't found anything amiss would suggest the problem could lay with what you have on the computer.

Had you downloaded/installed anything immediately or recently prior to this happening ?

I assume you have already tried a clean boot or your restore points ?

Unfortunately, the store doesn't fully open in Safe Mode with Networking which would isolate all 3rd party programs, so a clean boot is the next best option.

While you say you don't or rarely use those apps - it's annoying that something doesn't work as it should.

I haven't noticed it from occurring for a while so I don't have any restore points going back far enough. I did try a clean boot however like you suggested, and it also didn't make any difference.

It looks like I'm going to have to do a complete reinstall.

It's been a while since I updated anything in the store so there are actually 33 apps that the store says need to be update. I was actually trying to install a new app (ear trumpet) when I first noticed the problem.

If that doesn't work or it would be too much work transferring over to that account, create a system image onto external media then uninstall one of the apps to see if it can be installed afresh.

I'm going to try this next. I ready have a system image that I get a little while ago so I have a good image to revert to. Earlier I went back to an image I had from March but even then I still had the brain problem so the problem has existed for a while.

I came across this article on another forum - https://care.king.com/en/candy-crush-jelly-saga/cant-get-your-games-to-load-on-windows-10-check-this-out

While it deals with not being able to load apps - it has steps for setting the updates to automatic which may help.

Thanks for the articles and ideas.  I checked in my update was actually set for automatic in the window store.  Interestingly I also checked and all of mine Windows 10 system updates are fine and up-to-date, it's just the updates for items in the store that are not working.

These following cmds are really for Windows Update problems but could be related.

Open a Command Prompt (Admin) then copy & paste the cmds en bloc where they will auto run except perhaps for the last one where you will need to press enter.

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

Then enter shutdown /r /t 00 to effect an immediate reboot and then see how things go.

The SoftwareDistribution cmd will remove your update history but won't affect installed updates.

Reversing the cmds will reinstate the previous versions of Catroot2 and Software Distribution folders.

BTW - Did you try the fresh app install ?

EDIT - I'm shooting off for a few hours but will be back later.

Thanks for the additional ideas.  I ran through all the commands and the only thing that can function as expected was that when I tried to stop msiserver came back and said it was not running.  When I started yet farther down the command list it did start okay however as I rebooted and the store didn't work again I checked and it wasn't running then either.  I checked the "Services" and it was set to automatically start which is what I believe is supposed to be.  I'm wondering if this somehow may be associated with my problem?

The msiserver is the Windows Installer service and that is default set to manual and not generally showing as Started.

Which service are you referring to that is set as Started and Auto ?

I can't find anything in Services that relates to the MS Store other than one for the store installer service and its default is also Manual and not showing as started.

If it is any of those listed in this article, you can click on them to reinstall.

I actually used the Tweaking.com Windows Repair AIO to do a complete resetting of all service settings.  That had no effect on the issue either.  I found another article about how to remove and reinstall the Windows store went through that without any problems but I didn't have any affect either.
Title: Re: Getting error code: 0x80070002 updating Microsoft store apps

You haven't answered which service was set to Started and Auto.

If you ran all of the repair program repairs then it will probably have taken out your Windows Update.

Can you go Start - Settings - Update & Security then see if a manual check for updates will work or produce an error.

If it produces an error message then run the program again in Safe Mode with Networking then click on Backup Tools and select Restore for the Registry back up.

Click on Restore Registry then use the dropdown to select the back up then click on Restore Now and check your Windows Update again.

If it hasn't reinstated it, then use the link I've posted for Win 10 Services and reinstall BITS and the Windows Update services.

msiserver is the service I was referring to earlier that was automatic and started.  I did a complete reset of all services using Tweaking.com AIO and now it shows manual and that started.

I went and did a manual check for updates and everything worked fine.  Also if I use winver HFI system is updated to 1803- 17 134.112 which I believe is the latest version available for normal release.

It's good that the program didn't screw your updates as it has done for some on here including myself.

Can you try the App update again and then go into Event Viewer and check the time stamped errors to see if there are any with the same time stamp that could be associated with the 0x80070002 one that you are already getting.

I didn't get any errors in the event log when I tried to update the Microsoft Store, however when looking at the event log I noticed that I got quite a few various errors when I booted up this morning.

I'm attaching a copy of those errors to see if you see anything that might because the problem in those errors.

Do you get the same errors after a shutdown and then a restart ?

I'm not sure the delay in connecting to the Internet could be a DNS issue but I use Level3's DNS servers.

You probably know how to do this but I'll run through it anyway.

Go Start - ncpa.cpl and press enter.

Right click on whichever adapter you are using and select Properties.

I have the box for (TCP/IPv6) unchecked as it can cause problems.

Click on (TCP/IPv4) then on the Properties button.

Click on the button to Use the following DNS servers then type 209.244.0.3 in the top row of boxes then tab down and type 209.244.0.4 in the lower row.

Check the box to Validate settings upon exit - OK - Close - where the troubleshooter will start and should report no problems.

Depending upon whether there is a repetition of those errors on restart, you may need to unregister/re-register the time server.

This is done from an admin cmd prompt with these cmds -

net stop w32time

w32tm.exe /unregister

w32tm.exe /register

net start w32time

shutdown /r /t 00

Then check Event Viewer after the restart.

I can't find anything on the MS Windows Host Network service error but changing the DNS servers can resolve a number of problems.

Here's a new copy of the event log after I follow the procedures you suggested.  I actually had previously been using the Google DNS servers but I changed to the ones you suggested to see if it made any difference.

Didn't see any changes to try to update the Microsoft store either but really didn't expect to.

I don't know if those kernel processor errors are normal for your machine, but I see you are still getting the DHCP Client and MS Windows Host Network service error.

I don't have that service listed in my services and have never gotten that error in Event Viewer.

For the DHCP Client error I would try a power cycle of the router.

You would do this by switching off the router and computer and disconnecting all cables for a couple of minutes.

Connect the cables then switch just the router on and when all lights are back on, switch the computer on to see if you still get the same error.

A more extreme cure can be by doing the same but leave the router switched off for 30mins.

When you switch the router back on, this will give you a different external IP address which can resolve some connectivity errors.

It could also be your wireless driver which needs reinstalling/updating.

Let's see if this cmd will resolve the Host Network service error.

Open a cmd prompt admin and enter -

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=disallow

shutdown /r /t 00

and then see if you still get it after the restart.

Attached is the new event log.  My configuration is I have an RG (residential gateway) and downstream that I have a Netgear Orbi mesh router system.  The WAN address is picked up by the gateway.  For this test I completely reset the RG and make sure that it had a different WAN address, I also turned on the Wi-Fi in it which is a completely different LAN address system incompletely took the Orbi system out of the picture.

The only other thing that might be generating error is that I have virtual network that I connect to occasionally for work that if not connect automatically at boot up and requires manual connection afterwards.  Maybe this is throwing a couple of the errors?
Title: Re: Getting error code: 0x80070002 updating Microsoft store apps
Post by: Boggin on June 24, 2018, 03:06:04 pm
Yes, that's probably it as I saw Remote Desktop errors in previous events you posted.

I think the MSiSCSI error is also related to your Virtual network.

If you executed that netsh cmd to disallow the hosted network then redo the cmd changing disallow to allow.

Are you using a desktop or laptop and if using a laptop, are you on battery or AC ?

Here are some other suggestions for those kernel process power errors. - http://www.eventid.net/display-eventid-37-source-Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Processor-Power-eventno-10756-phase-1.htm

So the DHCP Client errors were being generated by the Netgear Orbi ?

I don't think this is getting us any closer to resolving your store error though, unless it's driver related

I'll ask my Support to see if he has any ideas as to why the Apps won't update, given what you have tried.

I'm using a laptop, connected via Wi-Fi on  AC power.  I wasn't using the Orbi when I sent you that last set of data.  I'll go try the suggestions in that link and let you know later if I get anything from.

I certainly appreciate all the help, it will be interesting to see if anybody else comes up with any other ideas.

Had a good night's sleep - thank you, but unfortunately, so far my suggestions haven't got anywhere for your apps problem.

Should it be a driver thing, can you go into Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices and right click on all items in System devices and select Update driver.

You could also check to see if there are any updates for your graphics and audio drivers.

For the most part that will probably return that you already have the latest driver, but there may be one or two that will update.

If there are, see if that has any effect on the apps problem.
Title: Re: Getting error code: 0x80070002 updating Microsoft store apps
Post by: MSRadell on June 25, 2018, 05:36:39 am
I didn't even know there were hidden devices inside of device manager, go figure.  I went through and checked all the system devices driver update and didn't find anything.  However I ran the Intel driver checking utility and it said I needed to update my drivers for Intel video and Bluetooth.  I updated both of those but it didn't make any changes to the problem.

While I was in settings, just for fun of in Iran but troubleshooter "having trouble was updates" it actually came back and said that they were pending updates that need to be installed.  I let it go ahead and do that and then rebooted.  I then ran a troubleshooter again and it came back saying the same thing so at least the troubleshooter thinks I have updates that are pending.  Not sure what they would be because it appears that I have all the latest Windows 10 updates from what I can tell.

Can you boot up into the advanced boot options and select Command Prompt to enter the following cmd which should get rid of that.

dism.exe /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

exit

Check to see if the message has gone after restarting.

If it thinks there are pending updates, I wonder if they are the app ones stuck in limbo, so to speak.

You could try updating them again if the message has gone.

I had run them all previously.  The one I ran this morning that told me I had updates pending was the one under Settings/Update and Security/Troubleshoot/Windows Update.  I know I had run that one before but for some reason it came up today thing I had updates pending?

I'm not going to be able to run that command set to clear things the command prompt to my wife gets here a little later.  I can't type that string commands into the keyboard with my disability and obviously speech recognition doesn't work when you are at the command prompt outside of the Windows OS.

At that cmd prompt can you enter bcdedit |find "osdevice" to see if it still sees the volume as being in C:

If it gives a different partition letter, then use that instead of C: in the cmd.

That is a Pipe symbol before find and is the uppercase of \

There is another cmd you could try first but the dism cmd is the stronger.

If the partition returns as C: then type c: else the partition letter and press enter then enter this cmd -

fsutil resource setautoreset true %systemdrive%

Okay, I ran: "dism.exe /image:C:  /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions" from the  x:\> prompt and it ran successfully from everything I saw.

I then rebooted went to the Windows settings/updates and ran the troubleshooter.  It still showed me that there updates pending, it says it clears them but when I run it again they are still there.  I also tried running updates and it didn't update anything.

Based on this I still went ahead and tried to updating the window store, figured I had nothing to lose, and of course as expected the updates didn't install and came back with the same error again.

I was wondering if with the WPE disk in whether it was confused as to where the updates should go - but that has been dispelled as a theory.

Let's see if you still get the pending message after a cold boot.

Shutdown then remove the battery and AC and hold the power button in for about 30secs then put it back together and see if you get the same message without trying the updates first.

These cmds are again run from the cmd prompt in the advanced boot options.

Enter -

c:

cd C:\windows\winsxs

ren pending.xml pending.old

regedit

Highlight HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - click on File - Load Hive

When that opens browse to C:\windows\system32

Locate the following folder - C:\windows\system32\config\components and click on to select.

When you are prompted for a name, type offline_components

You will now see the key offline_components - expand the + then locate and delete the following subkeys -

HKLM\Offline Components\AdvancedInstallerNeedResolving

HKLM\Offline Components\PendingXmlIdentifier

Go back to the key Offline_Components - highlight it then go to File menu and select Unload Hive

Close up the registry sections and reboot.

From a Command Prompt (Admin) in normal Windows, enter -

net stop wuauserv

cd %systemroot%

ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

net start wuauserv

shutdown /r /t 00

and see if that has cleared the pending message.

You may have problems with those cmds in Win 10.

The last time I checked them out was on Win 7.

Using the advanced boot options cmd prompt, I'm getting path not found for the first cmd.

It does work in a normal cmd prompt admin but again, for the ren pending.xml cmd I get cannot find the file specified, so leave them.

I'm looking to see if there is an alternative method.

See if clearing the store cache will help - if you haven't already tried it.

Go Start - type wsreset then right click on it and select Run as administrator when it comes up.

A small cmd window will pop up while it's doing it and then the Store will open.

As you say you have 33 apps to update, I'm not sure if they are all listed in the Start list but right clicking on any and selecting More/App settings will give you the option to reset where it will be reinstalled and revert to its default settings.

Shane has released a new version of the repair program - give that a try.

I reset wsreset last evening and didn't see any results.  If you said I tried many long list of commands you had earlier but kept getting it come up saying it couldn't find the specified file like you did for you.  I'll go and try updating and running the new version of his program now.

I downloaded and installed the updated version of the update program and ran it.  After that I went and checked for updates and actually an update was installed.  I ran a troubleshooter and it came up clean.  However, when I went to try the window store I still get the same error when I try to run update there.

I don't know what else to suggest for this.

I'll ask Shane as he suggested the new version should fix it, but as a repair install didn't, I was doubtful.

No problem, I certainly appreciate the help and suggestions.  I would keep playing around and see what I come up with.  As long as it is only affecting updates to the store I'm not going to worry about a complete reinstallation of Windows at this time.

I'm not sure if he thought it was an update problem from earlier versions of WR but I've told him you had this before ever running WR.

He's in thinking mode at the moment.

I'm waiting for that update to install and then it will need a reboot.

Shane thinks it could be one of the services but he isn't sure which one.

There's only the Installer one for the Store and that is set to Manual.

I doubt if it will help but could you go into Services and right click on the MS store service - select Properties and use the dropdown to change its status to Automatic.

Click on Start - Apply - OK - close up Services and reboot to effect and then try the updates.

You can use the same procedure to change it back to Manual if it has no effect.

EDIT - Windows wants me to restart for that update so I'll be going offline for a few mins.

Unfortunately, that didn't affect the ability to update the store items at all.  After I checked that and then returned to manual and rebooted I went over and checked the Windows updates again they looked okay but when I ran the Windows update troubleshooter it told me that there were pending updates?  I let it fix the problem but no new updates were installed?

I'll run my update troubleshooter from Settings and see what it reports for mine.

That was okay - it reported it couldn't ID the problem which means there wasn't one.

the last update of the repair program fixes some rather tough update issues. Try those repairs and see if it helps.

I did that over the weekend with what at that time was the latest update.  I'm going to try again later today.

Thanks!
