Title: Machine won't boot after repairs
Post by: mentioch on May 18, 2021, 09:00:23 am
I have a windows 10 machine that I did a repair on (all 44 tools, free version; not sure of version number). Backed up registry. Did repairs in safe mode. After repairs completed I got a message to reboot. Machine has not successfully completed start-up process. Screen goes to tumbling arc and stays there for hours with very little disc activity.

Is there a way for me to reboot so I can restore the registry and roll back restore point?

Thx

If you have access to another machine you can create a bootable Win 10 USB.

The ISO is now too large for a DVD.

You will need at least an 8GB stick - I tend to use 16GB USBs.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-an-iso-file-for-windows-10-38547366-1dcb-7afd-1726-9eb222d72705

When you've done that, insert the USB into the affected machine, tap F12 as you switch it on then use the cursor keys to select the USB drive and press enter.

This will boot the machine.

Navigate to the Install screen and click on Repair your computer - Troubleshoot.

You can either select Start-up Repair or the Restore point option.

Would it be possible to boot a machine like that using an external HDD that has other things on it apart from the Win10 .iso, or should I use a 16gb stick with nothing else on it?

The Win 10 ISO needs to be used with bootable media.

When you create a bootable install USB it will remove any files already on it.

I use 16GB sticks for my Win 10 bootable media.
