Post by: richard on January 13, 2013, 08:48:52 am

What repair tools did you run? And is it only Windows updates that give you the error?

having same issue...........

each version of your AIO repair tool I used (from 1.9.2 onwards, and I've used every version since) seems to somehow corrupt the windows store app installer.  So, it downloads the apps, but doesn't install them (the dreaded 0x8007064a error).  how do i fix this WITHOUT a reinstall or a refresh?

EDIT: Now the windows store WON'T OPEN!!!!  HELP!!!!!!

Also looks like a lot of people are having this problem, but be something that is very touchy. So lets find out what it is touchy about and fix it :-)

Doesnt the event viewer give us any information to work with?

yes it's on windows 8, and i run all the repairs by default.  my country is set to the US (where I live) so no changes needed there.  now, since the windows store will NO LONGER OPEN AT ALL, how do I fix this WITHOUT a refresh/reinstall?

Did you check the event viewer to see if it lists any error for the app store?

Title: Merge Networks Win 8?
Post by: DanTheTechMan on January 16, 2013, 08:06:21 pm
no i did not, but i will in a sec..............
on a side note................
since you've been very helpful 2 out of 2 times with my always unique and/or complicated tech problems, let's see if u can go 3 for 3.  i try and use spotflux (vpn), but it always, no matter what i do, goes into limited access mode. so, how do i successfully merge networks in win 8 (this is the only way i see to solve this dilemma)? this is the other dilemma i'm currently having.

here's the details of the windows store error from the event log:

I havent used spotflux so I dont have an answer off the top of my head. Bridging should be the same as right clicking on the network connect and choose bridge.

But lets worry about that after I get your app store fixed and my windows repair updated with the fix.

First thing is to find any error it is giving so I know where to start.

Looks like it might have been the file permissions repair.

I found this
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-AU/w8itprogeneral/thread/49b36f36-dce4-4376-9c62-50ac54f5e037

If we find the fix for it I will get the program updated right away :-)

the owner of drive C (system drive) is "TrustedInstaller". is this good?
btw, I added "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" to the list of approved users for drive C (and gave it full control).  some folders (including both program files folders, and the windows directory) couldn't be accessed, though.

That's ok, reboot and test the app store and let me know.

Since it is getting access denied error we know it is a permission problem, Just have to find out where it needs the permissions :-)

Lots lol, I am searching for any and all fixes for the app store related to permissions. It is shocking how many people have trouble with the app store!

Here is the next one to try

Click Start, and then click Run.
Type comexp.msc, and then click OK. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.
To locate your computer, click Component Services, click Computers, and then click My Computer.
Right-click My Computer, click Properties, and then click the COM Security tab.
Under Access Permissions, click Edit Limits to check and, if necessary, change the Access Permissions limits on applications that determine their own permissions.

Under Launch and Activation Permissions, click Edit Limits to check and, if necessary, change the absolute limit on component launch and activation permissions.
Use Edit Default for each item to adjust Access Permissions and Launch and Activation Permissions to allow the requested operation to complete.

Not sure, havent seen it yet :-)

Here is classic shell. Goes on Every Windows 8 install I do even my own. Like I said I havent touched the tile screen since I installed it :-)
http://www.classicshell.net/

Also I have been doing a lot of reading on the information I found and there is roughly about a thousand ways to break the app store. You think MS would have tested it better. It could have been reg or file permissions. I dont use the app store so I didnt see it on my system. I will install 8 in vmware and then do 1 repair at a time until the app store breaks (If it breaks) and then at least I will know which repair did it and then I know where to find a fix.

it is 9 pm, kids are a sleep and I have my drink while I work. Might as well get 8 installing in vmware :-)

i'm not talking about a network bridge, i'm talking about merging networks, done from the root of the network and sharing center (in win7).  remember manage network connections..............  they removed that in win8!

and i see u use teamviewer as well! nice choice!
Title: Re: error 0x8007064a apps won't start
Post by: Shane on January 16, 2013, 09:27:48 pm
Oh! Sorry about that.

They removed it? I am sure they have to have a way to edit it.

About to install 8 in vmware but it wants a key. I only need a test of it and dont want to use my key. The default Windows 8 setup wont let you skip the keycode during install like you could Windows 7. I found a trick to where I can skip the the like 7 in the setup. Just have to add a file to the ISO. Once I get that done I can get to testing :-)

there was a registry edit i found, but it applied to the CP, so..............

but what i'm trying to do is merge a physical network interface with a virtual network interface.

btw, windows store still dosen't work, even after the latest tip.

and what file did u add 2 the win8 iso? must know!

OK let me get 8 going in vmware and replicate this bug. Anything I can replicate I can fix.

I will do each repair 1 at a time till the store breaks. Then I know where to start looking. I will post back either tonight or tomorrow with my findings and hopefully a fix :-)

Ok good news on this so far. After running all my repairs when I tried to install an app from the app store I got the same error (App store still opened for me)

So I did a restore registry from my registry backup program and then the app store installed in the apps with no problems.

So I have now traced it to the registry. I will keep digging in, now to see if I can find which repair is triggering it, and what in the registry is doing it.

I have traced it down to the reg permissions repair doing it.

Trying to find what keys it needs now :-)

shane, my computer had so many errors (most NOT due to ur tools) that I was forced to do a complete reinstall of win8.  looks like i'll be up extremely late (again)!

btw, I tried that tool u just linked me to time and time again, mostly with no luck whatsoever.

Post by: Shane on January 17, 2013, 08:36:21 pm
As I have been digging into the app store problems it is AMAZING how fragile it is. One simple permission setting will break it.

I think I may need to put an update out asap that disables the reg permissions repair on Win 8 till I can find what keys it is complaining about.

The funny thing is even when I add everyone full rights to every key (It is something under hkey local machine from my tests) it doesn't matter. It seems that Microsoft sees any permissions change at all to certain keys it wont install apps. It must be some sort of DRM they are using. Problem is NO ONE knows which keys. Using process mon from sysinternals the app store hits over 10,000 reg keys!!!

So it truly isnt a permissions denied error, it is more a "oh someone change a permissions, they must be trying to install apps they didn't buy" type thing, that or bad programming on their part.

or what u could do, to save urself a bunch of work, is just temporarily re-upload the current AIO repair tool as a zip file with a readme for win8 users.
Title: Re: error 0x8007064a apps won't start
Post by: Shane on January 17, 2013, 08:48:04 pm
If I could just trace what reg keys it is looking at I could put a command to remove any changes to the permissions. But no one knows yet what keys it is hitting. And when I Google errors with the app store it is shocking the amount of people having trouble.

Right now I traced it to the reg permissions and to keys under the hkey local machine section. I cant have my repair tool breaking things, which in a way it isn't as there is full access with the permissions, it is the DRM MS is doing that doesn't like permission changes. Only option till I find those reg keys is to block the reg permissions repair on Windows 8 only.

I am trying my hardest to trace what keys it is looking at. I wont give up just yet :-)
