I have scanned, faxed, printed and copied when I installed the Brother and everything works, both wireless and wired.

When I bought the laptop there was a missing driver, I believe for the card reader, and you can no longer get this Ricoh driver. But, I have an external card reader so that was never a problem. So, when I right-click troubleshoot it tries to find that missing driver, which it will not find since it's discontinued. I told it to look for other changes and it claims everything is fine.

I will go ahead and uninstall/reinstall the Brother software and see if that fixes it-I am just concerned something else has changed and I won't know it. LOL Never heard of this problem before and it definitely surprised me.

I bought/installed a Brother all-in-one  1 or 2 months ago that is compatible with Win 7. Everything has been working fine (both wi-fi and cable connection).

This past week, I went into Devices and Printers to click on the PC icon at the top left and I was shocked to have the Brother Scan window open instead! I have been trying to find answers and I chose to run Tweaking Repair Tool to no avail.

It would seem when I did the hard boot and went into Safe Mode to run Tweaking repair tool, this problem does not exist when I open Devices and Printers - seems to be just my user account. This is s true pain because I have spent a LOT of hours to get old programs installed, including problematic programs like Adobe Master Collection, and getting this machine set up to do some stuff I can't do on Windows 10. So, now that I am almost done doing everything I find this problem!

I should add, I ran the Repair Tool, system tweaks, even resetting the printer spool (I think it was called) and it diid not fix it.

Anyone know what is going on here? I am concerned if I uninstall all the printer software, will it actually fix the problem, or will it still be a hidden issue that messed up the system somehow? I am truly confused - never seen a problem like this on anybody's computer.

I decided to play some music and I was able to turn my speakers up to 100% without having issues.

I went to enhancements because loudness equalization will help and sometimes mysteriously gets shut off, guess with updates.

It's on! I played with it and then went to device manager and looking at the volume mixer, etc and realized that Windows removed the other sound driver I had. I have NO clue what driver it was, but it had a different name and was NOT owned by MICROSOFT!!!

So, now I am having to use the default volume and without LE on, at 35 and you hit the play test, you can't even hear it at all. GRRRRRR

And with this being an older computer and it's not listed online with this model, I have NO clue.

Also, read on another site that 4 Windows versions have intermittently hit people with their sound!

I am SO tempted to go to Linux and forego anything MS and sacrifice the things I DO like about MS.

For some reason, when I was trying to transfer folders/files (personal data) from my external hard drive to my computer there were some files that the message popped up saying I needed Admin rights and I didn't even get the Continue button, skip button or anything.

The status window had no other options on it at all. Only choice was to click the X at the top of it.

Granted I did not need these files, but you know when you make webpages and such, there will be both Mac and Win files in the folder, it would not allow the DS_store files (I think that is what they are called?) and encrypted files/folders to come over. I had to transfer anything encrypted as unencrypted.

I have never had those problems in the past so it got quite frustrating. I finally pinned it down to the exact place it was happening and deleted those files so I could move forward.

There was something else I was trying to do...I will have to try to remember what it was, it was on the computer itself, and it also told me I didn't have Admin rights. But, when I went to the user account all the green checks were on for the different permissions...

Oh! Another weird thing, I forgot. Granted I did not have to put the Win license Key back in, but the nickname of my computer was changed. It used to be PCAdd and now it changed to Compu - again not a big deal, but it still happened. And the timezone issue I mentioned on the other thread.

Oh! And one more thing, when doing this update, when it walks you through the setup, it forced me to choose a PIN, which didn't happen before. There was no option to do it later, say no thanks or nothing.

When I just got the 1809 update the other day, it was what messed up Windows Defender. I had LOTS of issues with WD after the update to the point it would not start, lag, freeze, not load and all kinds of weird things.

I also had a LOT of other issues with the computer, i.e., the time zone, date/time format, brightness icon removed from the battery, certain missing files, other changed options, Admin permissions being blocked when trying to move files... that had me in a fit!

I had not used WR anywhere near this update.

I tried to use WR AFTER the update and could not get the Safe Mode w/networking to work.

Instead, I had saved everything to an external HDD and reinstalled ver. 1809 a total of 3 times and it finally worked itself out, except for the Admin rights-very strange, but I think I have gotten past it (I hope?).

I am interested in trying the new 4.4.1 version, now that I have Win 1809 working but I am still reinstalling a few other programs that I need first.

So far, the computer is working great, now...almost better. lol

On the other hand, I helped another friend around the same time, over the phone, get their installation going and they also have an older machine and their 1809 update went on without a hitch-go figure! My guess? They probably don't change much to their computer so MS knew what to do, so to speak.

6
Yes, you would think they would have pulled it, or better yet, not have issued it at all until they were solid.

This to me, is just another Win 95a and Vista type problem!

They did great with 3.1, 95b, XP, 7, but all the rest had lots of serious issues.

I have always been the type to say give the end user more control and don't fix something that isn't broke. Personally, I would have kept Win 7 and given updates that were OPTIONS for people who could actually utilize the new additions. But what do I know?!

US is supposed to have so much freedom, but Germany gets a much better deal with MS than we do. Such is life.

If I weren't so afraid of future (drastic) changes, I would just keep Windows 7 and have good AV/malware protection, but I am sure they will make it so you can't use programs, applications and other stuff to make sure you can't keep going.

7
Sounds good.

But here's a funny thing...A friend's husband has an older desktop and there were a couple things I talked my friend through and she allowed the update to do it's thing. Her husband came home and checked out his computer and everything was going great and he even said his computer was running a little bit faster. Not a single call to ask for help with any hangups.

So, who knows, it's like playing Russian roulette; you may update without a hitch! Then again, you can be like one of the countless others of us, who I have found scouring the internet. LOL

Would be nice (in a way) if you did have some issues so you could arm yourself with more tools in your arsenal.

Break a leg! hahaha

Hey Boggin,

I think I can end this thread now. I see that even though I chose the option to delete all data, apps and settings, it didn't really delete everything. Some of the things I tweak on my own were set to what I would set them! lol

Time zone went back to PST but I caught that right away this time.

Everything seems to be working between the OS and my computer now. (After 3rd attempt!)

So, I will just wait until Shane gets this new OS update figured out before I work with the software.

I still may open another thread on a couple things - I see I still haven't figured them out yet. UGH lol

Thanks for listening and the advice, Boggin, I think I am now in the clear!  :cheesy:

9
Okay, I am going to try resetting this one more time. If it works out better, I will keep it, and if not I will revert to 1803 tonight.

Ah! As for browsers, I am stuck with ALL 4.
I use the MEdge because of the rewards (and it's on the computer anyway)
I use Firefox for several things I do
I use IE for Pogo (they have not upgraded anything to work on the newer browsers)
I use Google Chrome because there are 2 companies who only make the extensions for Google use.

Will update after my last ditch effort. lol

10
Hi Boggin,

I will go ahead and wait for Shane, then. I really appreciate the work he has done in making such a great product. I only wish I knew how to do that! lol :-)

Only thing is I was reading that reverting from 1809 to 1803, they only give you 10 days?

Yeah, this computer has an HDD

I do regular cleanup on my computer(s), which include:
History in the browsers, when closed
%temp%
temp
Flash
Java - keep the storage set on minimum and cleaned out (don't normally have it on, but need it for Zoom)
disk cleanup (both options)
Disk Defrag

I just went into Task Manager to check the Startup Items and the only things listed:
Logitech Download assistant, which I am sure I can turn off? I think this is just for the wireless mouse?
Synaptics TouchPad for the laptop touchpad
Windows Security Notifications icon, which is for my Windows Defender

Something that I have ALWAYS noticed, with every version, is Firefox really eats up the memory, or is it a memory leak?

Right now, I have 4 tabs open but in Details, it shows 6 instances and all together it adds up to 700K Kb
Often when I close Firefox, it will still be running for a few on any computer I have had. That's why I like the memory cleaner on the WR tray icon.

Anyway, I think I will open a new thread for a couple things, if I can't figure them out.

11
Okay, I am back.

I would have tried F8, if you had not told me this info. Thank you! More new things to learn, I see.

Ethernet worked perfectly in the Safe Mode from just Windows.

I am unsure if all these should be having notes but I thought I would show you:

All Audio, Not available

Other Drivers: Base System Device, Base System Device and Unknown Device Code 28
No compatible drivers are available - thinking this is my card reader

Software Devices: MS GS Wavetable Synth, Not available

System Devices: MS Hyper-V Virtualization Infrastructure, Driver can't load

Networking:
Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection- Device working properly
Intel Centurion Ultimate-N6300 AGN - Device working properly

So, I guess it is something with WR not communicating to Win 1809?

I have to say it took a LOT of work to get 1803 to work properly on my system, but 1809 has caused way more problems than the 1803. And to have this thing running good and go through this again is a real pain!

I will wait to hear from you and then maybe go ahead and roll back.

12
Oh! I completely forgot to mention the Ethernet connection. I was on the internet (via Ethernet) up until I did the restart in Safe Mode.  It didn't recognize it and only offered me to connect to wi-fi even though I have it off. But even with entering the key I still could not get past the log-in screen.

Something I just noticed, while checking my E-mail is that the clock reset itself to PST, which I have always been CST (-6:00). See? Things change by itself with these last 2 major updates from MS. A LOT of things.

Well, I could forego the WR for now, but I have to admit it sure helps speed this computer up with the tweaks and few of the repairs.

I have never used Macrium before. At this point, might not be worth it, though. As long as there is potential corruption with version 1809, I am not even ready to put everything back on the computer yet.

I will go ahead and uinstall the 2 tweaking programs and try to reinstall WR and see if I can get into Safe Mode yet. Will update with the results.

UPDATE:

Okay, I was able to get into Safe Mode but there is definitely a problem.

#1 I had shut off my password and PIN options for Windows 10 after I refreshed Windows

#2 When I went to Safe Mode it said my PW was incorrect. I had to input my PW and then it let me into Safe Mode.

#3 I restarted the computer to exit Safe Mod and got 2 sign-in options:

1st says to enter PW but gives the User Name (not changeable)
2nd says incorrect PW and gives me the option to change User Name and PW

I went into the first one, but unsure which one is real and which one is fake, since neither one should need signing in. LOL

13
Hi Boggin,

Nope. This problem is brand new. Came with 1809 update that was only a week or so ago. After only fixing a couple issues on my own and realizing how many problems were actually created, it was time for me to give up and renew Windows.

At this point, I only have Firefox, Adobe Flash and the 2 tweaking programs installed. I haven't even added my personal files yet. I even sign into a website to check my E-mail at the moment.

I just installed WR & the Tech Repair several hours ago from the site. Version 4.4.0. I put in my pro keys and then was going to use WR before I install all my programs.

When restarting, it stops at the login page but no login box. On the bottom right there's the network icon and it has a red X, hmm I forget what the 2nd icon is, and then the power button to restart/shutdown.

When I click on the network icon with the red X, it shows wi-fi. I go ahead and try to proceed anyway, and it forces me to put in the Network security key for my modem. And it still just sits on the login page.

My only option at that point is to restart/shutdown. I went ahead and restarted and came back to the normal desktop.

I tried about 4 times before I came to the forums. Even after posting here, I tried another time. It will not do anything else.

But yeah, if you really think it will help, I can go ahead and uninstall/reinstall WR and TRT.

Hi,

Windows 1809 really messed up my computer badly! I was one of the people who only got the update about a week or so ago. There were so many things messed up, I finally gave up, saved all my personal data to an external HDD and did a PC refresh or whatever it's called. It seems to have finally installed without a hitch (I think) and a lot of remnants of uninstalled programs finally seem to be gone. Other simple issues seem to be okay now.

Since the refresh (yesterday), I made sure Windows is fully updated (it installed some Win Defender updates), have only installed Adobe Flash, Firefox and the Tweaking.com WR Pro and Tecnicians Toolbox Pro.

Tonight, I went to use WR and when my computer restarts to go into Safe Mode, it sticks at the "sign-in page" and has an X in the internet connection icon (bottom right), only wants me to start wi-fi and re-enter my Network Security Key and will not leave this page. I have no sign-in option or anything. My only choice at this point is to click the restart/shutdown icon (bottom right) and come back to normal Windows desktop.

I am guessing it has something to do with the bcdedit that Shane is talking about, or again, maybe something else. All I know is Shane suggests to only run WR in Safe Mode so I decided to come here and try to get some help before I do much of anything else.

Thanks.

Hi Boggin,

Sorry, I forgot to update. He helped me out.

Thanks for checking on me, though!

Cindy

17
Thank you Boggin!

UPDATE: Boggin, isn't Shane running the show anymore?

I wrote JPM as you suggested, but he was no help at all. I KNOW I have 2 separate key codes (1 for windows repair and 1 for tech toolbox) and the ONLY reason I wrote is because the Tech Toolbox Key Code is NOT working.

This is a week now.

18
Hi,

I see Shane, you are blocking PM's now? Oh well. LOL

I broke my other laptop and in January I had to buy a used HP Elitebook 8740w and it's running Windows 10.

I recently reinstalled the Windows Repair and Tech Toolbox onto this computer. I found my keys and Windows Repair accepted the key.

However, the Tech Toolbox did not accept the password I have for it.

Today, I went ahead and paid for the v4 upgrade for the Windows Repair software.

The Technician's Toolbox software still shows the free version. Can you help me fix this?

Thank you,
Cindy

Everything Else / Re: Debating the integrity of Search engines.
« on: June 18, 2015, 09:55:34 am »
I won't touch bing and google with a 10-foot pole! When on a computer, they are the first 2 things to go

I also use duckduckgo and https ixquick. I don't trust ixquick as much after they connected to google!

I use ipl2 for researching a lot. I've used dogpile a few times.

I am just getting sick and tired of search engines, in general and on shopping sites, losing their more specific results.

You put in pink flamingo and you could get muddy horses, dvds for sale or something! hahaha Back in the mid-90's, search optimization was soooo much better. I know they are doing it on purpose, but it really gets my goat.

OH!!! THANK YOU SHANE!!! I was going nutz over here. Now I definitely know why it happens once in a while-just that it's been almost 2 years since it happened...but now I know!

So now, I am wondering if my Java on Pogo is acting up because of a glitch/bug/poor programming.

I like to play High Stakes Pool over there and you have to aim, choose any English and then pull the cue back to get the power you want and then release. BUT, it's been releasing prematurely and that's why I was working on it-but I am going to dig a little deeper again, to see if there's any bugs in Java or if it's just a Pogo thing. Pogo tried to tell me, I was the first they heard about this-but you never know.

I have been trying to make sure ALL is working well with the newest software so I can make a new System Image again...I miss the days of Win 3.1! hahaha

Thanks again!

Hi Guys,

Hi Boggin,
Well is the flash and java, I had to delete the automated installs and updates, tried the offline installs and that didn't fix it right away. Then there was something about getting junk out of the registry that was still not allowing it to work right. And then I did a another offline install. Took some doing but finally they were working.

Hi Shane,
Unfortunately, that was the thing I said I could not remember what else I had tried-it was going into the about:config and turning both "browser.shell.shortcutFavicons"  and "browser.chrome.favicons" to False and cleaned caches and restarted again.

For this FF problem, I was originally reading all those favicon threats out and unable to get any of their fixes working either. There is one thread that kinda got me because a man was asking the exact same question because he wanted to make a favicon bookmark to stay on his client's desktop and wanted to know what to do. First off, that poor man was continually getting berated saying how he can't be a webmaster if he insists on putting up a desktop bookmark and well a bunch of stuff instead of trying to give him an answer. At some point, they stated it's a bug but in some spots it "look" like they bug was supposedly fixed yet it came back when I just did that most recent Firefox update.

Hi Boggins and jraju,

Thanks for all the feedback, at least I have some people on my side!!!  :D

Boggin, the MS site for changing time zones-I know ho w to do that and even went into BIOS to check clock. jraju, I DID try everything  all 3 of you suggested-it's just none of them worked.  :-(

I am willing to try each and every suggestion- this includes but not limited to all the sites that talk about manually doing things, as well as, installing and running some registry edit program from Windowsseven forums, SQLite Manager, and something else, which I cannot even remember now.

The worst part, as you see, I ALL ready did another System Image Restore, tonight. Technically, this by itself, should have fixed the entire problem, no matter what. It didn't.

After I did the System Image Restore, and had to update FF, Java and Flash, Windows, I STILL had the white favicons when trying to save a FF bookmark to the desktop...AFTER the System Image Restore-how is that??? Has to be something in updates? No? Or did MS lie and it really doesn't completely wipe and replace the the drive??

Then, I went ahead and did the Windows Repair All-in-One and tweaks and restarted to normal windows, just to find the IE desktop favicons and 6 old FF favicons that have always been on my desktop have also now changed to white-they did have their favicons until tonight's attempts...The good news is that when clicking the IE icons, they restored the favicons. But now I do not have a single FF favicon, old or new -all white.

OH! I know what else I wanted to ask...why is it then, that FF bookmarks all have the capability of gaining and maintaining favicons? It's just that to me, it would seem normal to grab a bookmark out of my list and drag it to the desktop to make the same favicon, which of course is not happening either...Is it because they are not located or allocated the same way as the FF favicons on my desktop?

I tell you what, since I did the System Image Restore and used Shane's tools tonight, I will try this again-maybe it will work this time and I will post the results:

Installed the sqlite manager add-on and went to %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox
emptied places.sqlite table-did not work.
Also tried as you said to do the cookies.sqlite also-did not work.
I then bypassed the add-on and did it manually:
I deleted places.sqlite completely -it did not work
Went ahead and deleted ALL *.sqlite files in profile-did not work
I had to reinstall FF but I also went a step further and deleted old profile and created a new one-still only white pages when I try to make desktop bookmarks.

As for general maintenance, I always clear: temp, %temp%, Java, Flash, FF cache, and Disk cleanup periodically. And now I do the CleanMem as well.

Another dumb question: Is there any Windows services that should be on but may have been shut off?

I know the other day I found out that Shadow Copy was stopped and manual but I read it was supposed to be started and automatic for System Images. And after doing the Windows Repairs and Tweaks, tonight,  it turned it off again-so I got it back on.

23
Hi Shane,

I went to the site you pointed out and tried their method and I even tried methods mentioned in the replies lower down on the page. Nothing was fixing this.

I even went so far as to do a System Image Restore late Monday night and got everything updated yesterday. I started testing Firefox by using it and playing some Java and Flash games.
The favicon problem is here again, the Java is acting up and Flash "seems" to be okay so far.

Has it got to be something to do with the newest FF, Java or Flash?

I ignored this in the past but not I am wondering: My System Image Restore says -8:00 (forget GMT or UTC), but I am in -6:00. And then after the restore I have to set the clock from -6:00 Central America to -6:00 US and Canada time. I do not understand what is going on there...I checked BIOS and it says my time and date. Is there ANY chance that could be messing with things?

I have NO clue where the -8:00 OR the Central American time zone is coming from??? I find this especially strange because my original System Image had those times. Then after the successful install of Adobe CS5.5 Master Collection, I deleted my old System Image to make the new one (as mentioned in another post) and yet the time problem was there too. This 2nd System Image is the one I have used at least twice because of the FF problem and the same one I used Monday night. Back when, I was able to make favicons. And like I mentioned this has been a newer problem so how can my System Image not correct this?

I do not accept that it's user error-I am not a programmer, hacker, and so on but I have been avidly using computers since 1995 with Win 3.1, Win 95b, Win XP, and now Win7 and a little bit before that on the old Tandy and Macintosh builds.  I have been the one who people call and I can walk them through all kinds of fixes just from memory and what they tell me is going on, over the phone...

But then something I am totally unfamiliar with, will go wrong on my computer and I don't have anyone to call! hahaha But something is just really flipping out on this computer and causing a instability issue.

I suppose I can do another reformat, reinstall EVERYTHING fresh again, but MAN!!! I should be SO past this it's not even funny. And if it is something that's on my computer from software or updates, I will be in the SAME pickle ALL over again...What also gets me, is that I bought this computer in Oct 2012 and everything has been really good until a couple months before I joined your forums-something just isn't stable anymore and I really want to point fingers at MS updates first, then all the other stuff...

I look forward to what you have to say about this...in the meantime, I am going to take the time to do a power reset and try running your tools again and see if it does anything at all to help this.

UPDATE: I ran Windows Repair per your instructions and then I restarted and also did the Tweaks. Now the few FF desktop icons that were from the past, which still had their favicons, are now all blank white like the new ones I make.

Even the IE favicons were missing but after opening the links, for instance, the Tweaking.com favicon for IE was just an E but when I opened the link, it came back.

Anyway, at a loss here.

24
Hi jraju,

Thanks so much for that site; I jumped on it but to no avail. It got me to change my search criteria to the icon database and cache and so on and I found other things:

I even tried some other commands found on the net like /a=s, -h and using "" around the userprofile command-but none of those were recognized in my cmd prompt. Even did the pin/unpin from taskbar in the midst of all of this.

I also tried:  a "fix tool", Ent added to the thread: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/965667-iconcache-db-missing-rebuild-did.html

I looked for the Firefox shellex IconHandler in Registry, which doesn't exist.

I even decided to change the name of the IconCache.db to IconCache2.db and it didn't even notice I did that.

I also tried to drag a bookmark from favorites, that's showing an favicon, to the desktop and the favicon will not transfer over. Even tried a URL from IE to FF and so on-doesn't matter-something will not allow FF to put favicons on desktop at all.

I also read to change from 32-bit to 16-bit color in screen resolution and then go back-didn't work.

I did a sfc /scannow because some said it would work (tried again) and no errors to be fixed.

Even read on another site to go to Default programs and select my programs there as default-didn't fix it.

What really gets me is that out of all the websites I have looked at the last few hours, these things, especially your suggestion, have worked for many but there are some, like me who are still trying to find a fix. And the ones who are in my boat, I noticed the boards just end there...no more suggestions and no solution. Hard to believe.

And I keep going back to the fact all was okay until I worked to get Java and Flash working properly-instead of crashing all the time. (Which has been a good thing. lol)

I keep thinking it has to be very simple too...a reg value, a missing file, an altered file...I don't know...

I was thinking I could run Shane's All-in-one repair tool again, but not sure it will find/touch this problem?

Is there anything else you can think of, that I can try? If not, I understand.

25
Hi Boggin and Shane,

I am still having the same problem with favicons not showing up on my desktop.

I checked out the links Boggin gave me:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html
http://www.anvisoft.com/browser-repair-tool.html

Anvi said there were 17 issues with IE10 and 7 issues with Firefox but after it ran, the problem was not fixed. All Anvisoft really did, was to reset the browsers, which I can do on my own-I had to go back in and change everything all over again after it screwed everything up.

But this problem occurred while trying to fix the Flash and Java issues-which seem fine now.

I will show you the bookmarks for the fun of it.

I still think a folder got deleted or a registry key is messed up or something is going on. Everything was fine until I was messing with getting Java and Flash running properly...

I really don't want to do another System Image Restore since I finally have it so Flash and Java don't keep crashing...sighhh

What really gets me is everything was running like a top for a couple years and then after certain updates, things got hairy. And none of those companies want to admit it was their software...even when the problem started directly after the install. And the only reason I messed with Flash and Java is because I got tired of crashing all the time, but that came with a price (this new problem).

Thanks for any help, guys.

P.S. I am having a hard time finding the board, but someone (somewhere lol) was suggesting your video card software could cause this problem. If so, how could that be? And I am not sure what to do for that as I re-installed the vga software from ibuypower's website for my laptop...

UPDATE: Forgot to add the image. Left is IE10 and Right is Firefox 37
