Hello,

My Internet connection drops after a few hours and I have to restart to regain internet access. I am running Windows 7 SP1 64-Bit. I can access my router and local network fine but not the internet. I have my FIOS ONT box connected to my DD-WRT router, which is connected to a ethernet hub which connects all my devices to the internet (I strongly prefer to use wired connections wherever possible). As far as I can tell, it's just my desktop computer that disconnects. I have tried everything I can think of to resolve the issue, such as running various commands like ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, changing various settings on my router, running the NetAdapterRepair tool, and I even changed my security software from Bitdefender to Kaspersky, thinking that would solve it. Nothing I have tried works so far. The built in Windows troubleshooter doesn't help because Windows thinks I'm still connected. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can solve this dilemma? I have literally been losing sleep over this.

General Computer Support / Network Connection Consistently Dropping
« on: June 03, 2019, 10:08:42 pm »
Hi. I am experiencing what is apparently a very common problem with Windows 7. After 2-3 hours, my internet and local network connection completely drops on 2 of my 3 desktops. After it drops, I lose the ability to connect to anything, even my router. I have to reboot to restore internet. My wifi works fine, so I know it's not a hardware issue. I have tried everything I can think of to troubleshoot this (disable IPv6, disable side scaling, temporarily disable my security suite, change the DNS settings, system restore, selectively disabling software, swapping out my router). Nothing works. The only thing I haven't tried is an in-place repair, however, since this seems to be a Windows 7 issue, I'm not too sure if that will work. Almost all of my equipment uses a wired connection. I only use my wifi for my phone and the occasional visitor. I am typing this on my phone, since that is currently one of the only devices I own that has a stable internet connection. I am the go-to tech guy for all of my family and friends, so this issue is really hindering my ability to provide technical assistance. Please help!

Hi. After downgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 7, I can't seem to delete the OneDrive folder. I had it on an external hard drive, but forgot about it before I started the downgrade. Now I can't do anything with it (open it, delete it, change the properties/attributes, or anything else). It's just sitting there, useless and annoying me. Does anyone know of a way to remove it WITHOUT going back to Windows 10?

Hi. I am facing a very interesting issue:  Whenever I try to update Windows 10, or any Windows store app, I am thrown an "error 0x80070001".  I've tried a repair install, I've tried the Windows Repair software, both did NOT solve the issue.
I've attached screenshots of the error messages I get. Note that the updates listed are just the most current updates at the time that I am posting this.  I get that error for any and every update.
Also, I should mention, the following file is reported as corrupt in the pre-scan tool of the Windows Repair Software:
C:\WINDOWS\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-TestRoot-and-FlightSigning-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.15063.0.mum
I already tried to replace that file (directly from the Windows ISO), and it's still reporting as corrupt.
I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm running the latest build of Windows 10 (15063.14).  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi. I have a very strange issue.  I just upgraded to the newest release of Windows 10 (Redstone), and now, I can't run anything off my external hard drive.  I believe it has something to do with UAC, because after I disabled it, I could run the software from my external, however, none of the built in Microsoft apps would run, as Windows thought I was using the built-in Administrator account (this would only happen with UAC disabled). With UAC enabled, I would get an access denied error.  So, I'm at the point where I have to choose between the built in Microsoft apps or the ability to run installers form my external hard drive, however I shouldn't have to choose.  I Should be able to access everything on my PC, without any issues.  I've already tried playing with the drive permissions, to no avail.  Does anyone have any other ideas on how to remedy this?

I recently bought a "PCIe Soft Data Fax SoftRing Modem with SmartCP", and attempted to hook it up to both my fax machine and my landline (which are using two separate phone lines), and now, when I can't receive calls, and when I place them, the two phone lines become one (the caller ID shows up as my fax number, however both lines are being used, simultaneously).   Just to get confusion out of the picture, let me describe this portion of my setup in detail: I have "Line 1" (my landline) split between the modem and the phone itself, and "Line 2" (the fax) split between the fax machine and the modem.  So, yes, I have two separate phone lines going into a single modem, and would like a solution on how to get it to work without having to buy more hardware (additional software welcome).  Any suggestions?

General Computer Support / Computer "boots" without video
« on: December 31, 2014, 04:48:48 pm »
I am fixing a computer for a friend, and ran into a very interesting scenario.  The computer boots (or acts as such; all lights come on, fan spinning NORMALLY, not excessively loudly, even the optical drive shows activity as it should).  But, as the title suggests, I never get any video. No BIOS screen (I won't get any further than that because I just installed a unformatted hard drive in the machine). I even tried Installing a PCI video card to see if the onboard video was having issues (as rare as that is, I know it CAN happen), without any luck.  All out of ideas, and almost out of options, I am reaching out to the cyberworld for help.

For the record, the computer I'm fixing is an HP Pavilion Slimline S3321P.

Ok, so before I dig myself a hole, let me clarify my situation.  This is a Teamviever related issue, and I know it should be redirected to their support, but I've been back and forth with them for days, only to have them tell me to "uninstall my old version completely and attempt to reinstall the new one again", repeatedly. There are two issues with their "solution".  The version they are telling me to uninstall wasn't the one I was using prior to the issues starting, and their instructions completely miss the issue at hand.  The issue I'm having is not with a corrupt software installation, it's with a corrupt network adapter and it's associated driver.  Every time I attempt to install/uninstall Teamviewer, it goes fine, until it gets to the installation/uninstallation of the VPN Network Adapter.  Even if I try to uninstall it manually, same result.  I get a BSOD with a error code 0x139 (KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE). For the record, I am running Windows 8.1 Pro x64.  Any ideas on how to rectify this issue and get Teamviewer back up and running (without having to do what would be my 4th Windows reinstall in the last 3 months) would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

General Computer Support / Very Weird Windows Glitch (SOLVED)
« on: June 18, 2014, 12:13:33 pm »
Hi, I continue to have an issue opening the Local Security Policy Editor via the Administrative Tools menu via the Start Menu.  I get the following error message, after conforming a UAC Prompt: An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist.

What does that error message mean, and how do I fix it?  Using Windows 7 64-Bit.

General Computer Support / Computer Powers Up But Won't POST
« on: December 05, 2013, 05:58:57 pm »
Hi. I have a very odd, but common to HP issue.  My HP Pavilion Elite HPE-400f (no longer warranted and no longer eligible for their free repair service) will power on but that's about it.  All the components get power, however i get no video output, and the system board wont beep.  I replaced the system board, just to get the power button to turn the computer off instead of jut turning it on (only noticeable change).  The computer still won't POST.   When I unplugged everything and gutted it down to the bare essentials and powered it up, i noticed the green ethernet light half lit.  Does that signify anything?  Here's a link to a page where someone has an almost identical problem: http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/898138.aspx  Can the processer really go bad, or is it my power supply?

General Computer Support / Networking Issue
« on: November 10, 2013, 10:09:47 pm »
Hi, I'm only on this forum when I have a tech problem I can't solve myself (which isn't that often, and this is where I come to solve them).  So, that explains my long absence.  Anyway, I am having some networking trouble. I have two routers, (one directly connected to the internet) connected to each other through a powerline adapter (to avoid running a 100+ ft cable across my apt.). I would like both of them to be DHCP servers (I had this successfully working before).  My issue is Computer "A" (the one directly connected to the internet) gets internet fine, but computer "B" gets no internet (when the router is present).  When I remove the second router, I get internet on computer "B".  I would like to use both routers, both as DHCP servers. All of my computers now run windows 7 SP1.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

General Computer Support / Office 2013 Installation/Uninstallation Issues
« on: December 23, 2012, 03:22:39 pm »
I attempted to install Office 2013, it hung at about 85% (guess).  I let it sit that way to see if it would do anything, 8 hours later, still hung, so I ended all processes associated with the install and started the manual clean-up.  I now have the issue where there are certain UNDELETABLE registry keys leftover from the corrupt install.  I have been working on this for days, tried everything (cleaning the registry, DEFRAGGING the registry, system restore, which was unsuccessful.   I even tried the tool released by microsoft that's supposed to solve this issue). BTW, everything EXCEPT the undeletable registry keys are totally wiped clean off my computer. When I attempt to reinstall, it gets to about 5%, and crashes, every time! Where do I go from here?  I want to use Office 2013, if possible, without having to reinstall windows, because I just did that a week ago.  HELP!
