I just upgraded Tweaking.com Registry Backup to v4.0.0 on my Win10 desktop, previously I had v1.x installed. Getting the latest installed was surprisingly a difficult task for me. When I checked the website for the latest version I noticed that v4.0.0 was available. It seems that there is no automatic check to inform me that there is a newer version (sorry dumb user here). I downloaded the latest and attempted to install but it failed because
Quote
The following file is in use and can not be updated:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Tweaking.com\Registry
Backup\files\Backup_Failed_Message.exe
Close all other applications and choose Retry. Choose Cancel to install this file on reboot.
In Process Explorer I attempted to find the app but was not successful so I rebooted. I was then able to upgrade to v4.

BTW - I just attempted to insert an image (it would be super if I could just paste the image from my clipboard to the forum). When I click on the "Insert Image" icon I see some HTML code appear in the window but don't know what to do next. I attempted to find help on inserting images but was not successful.

I then attempted to run the registry backup. It had problems with the Volume Shadow and used the fallback method. Using the fallback it did run but reported "Errors! 27/30 Registry Files Backed up".

Looking at the backup window I see three selections highlighted. It seems obvious (to me) that these are items that were not backup. OK, now I know what was not backed up but I don't know what the heck to do about it.

Looking at the log I see "Volume Shadow Copy Failed! vss_7_8_2008_2012_64.exe isn't running. Check the Log_VSS.txt file to view any errors." However I cannot find the Log_VSS.txt file when I click on "View Logs". So I used the search application "Everything" to find "Log_VSS.txt" and find it in one of the earlier backups. Following is the contents of that file

I see the line "Please re-run VSHADOW.EXE with the /tracing option to get more details", I opened a CMD window as "admin" and pasted VSHADOW.EXE /tracing" into the window and pressed the enter key. It reports:

Using Everything I searched for "VSHADOW.EXE" and could not find any entries.

I searched the internet for volume shadow and see that it is part of wiindows, this leaves me totally confused.

Back to the Registry window:
It would be nice if I could resize the window and see everything without scrolling. Just a nit and not super important, just more friendly.

When I click on the View Logs button I go to "C:\RegBackup\S4\06.25.2023_14.13.25" (S4 is the name of my PC, e.g. System 4). This seems to be totally different than I see in the video. To me, this is confusing. By default the app stores my backups and logs at "C:\RegBackup\S4\"

When I click on the Restore Registry tab the window is empty.
When I use my explorer app I see that I have 25 backups. I was expecting to see 30 backups. In the app settings the "Keep" was set to 30 (I just changed it to 60) and the "Delete Old" setting was 60 and I set it 120. The real question here is "Why does not the app see my backups"? Is this a dumb user error? Have I done something wrong?

Sorry to be so dense but I'm easily confused. I'm open for suggestions.

I'm running Win 10 Pro v1903 build 18362.418
Registry Backup v3.5.3
I've been running registry backup with success since Dec of 2016 but the last two weeks it has been failing with the following errors. I've also attached the log just in case there is something I missed.

[11/03/19 - 17:31:49] Backing Up File: C:\Users\UpdatusUser\ntuser.dat
[11/03/19 - 17:31:49] Result: Failed - Error: -1 (API Reg Save Failed (), Tried File Copy, File In use, Cannot copy.)

[11/03/19 - 17:31:49] Backing Up File: C:\Users\UpdatusUser\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat
[11/03/19 - 17:31:49] Result: Failed - Error: -1 (API Reg Save Failed (), Tried File Copy, File In use, Cannot copy.)

I've rebooted the system several times and always get the error somewhere during the startup. I've also run the function in Tweaking.com Window Repair (v4.6.1) and get the same failure (I think it is the same).

It seems that I'm in constant computer hell with some weird issue thus I may have done something to create the issue but I'm not aware of what it might be. I currently have two major issues I've been researching for a few weeks, so far no solution. Because of the two issues (Sometimes when I boot my desktop the PC does not assign the static address and I get  ip address 169.254.71.110 or something like that. Also sometimes it will occur when the system has been running for some time, the other issue is a BSOD) I've gone down numerous rabbit holes. I will admit that I'm in over my head.

Earlier today I ran Tweaking.com Windows Repair and I'm still recovering from changes it made for me (damn). Now I have another new issue which occurred after running Windows Repair. Normally I leave my PC run 24x7, now when I return to my PC after being away for a period of time (few minutes to hours) the PC has shutdown. So far I cannot determine why it is shutting down. I really do NOT want the PC to shutdown.

I'm trying to use WhoCrashed to help with the BSOD, I had to recreate the full dump after running Tweaking.com Windows Repair) and don't know if I still get the BSOD or have a new issue, e.g. the random shutdown.

I'm open for suggestions and would appreciate instructions at the dummy level.

Tweaking.com Support & Help / Advanced System Tweaker 2.0 Suggestions

Suggestion for the Advanced System Tweaker 2.0
  • Remember the position & size of the window. This could be applied to all of the apps. Personally I dislike it when an app opens in the middle of the main screen. With multiple monitors I prefer the app to open on my desired monitor and in the position I placed it.
  • Allow me to resize the window to the size of my desire and remember the size the next time I use it.
  • I see that there is a tweak to "All Items Have an Edit With Notepad on Right-Click Menu". How about using the text editor of my choice? There are numerous text editors that are much better than Notepad.
  • Tweak - remove temp files - I'm not sure but it looked like this only cleaned the C drive, the window closed too fast for me to really determine. However I'd like to see this enhanced to check all of my drives for TEMP folders and other temp files such as those left behind by MS Office.

I recently ran all the steps in v3.9.27 Tweaking.com-Windows Repair Window. One of the steps reverts all of the settings to the Windows defaults. This is a double-edge sword in that it can be a good or bad thing to do. Good in the sense some settings have been set and have created issues and  bad in the sense I've really customized my system and now a lot of things no longer work as expected. Before the settings are set to the default I'd like to see what is going to be changed and the option to deselect one or more of the settings. At this time I'm still finding settings that I have customized and going through the pain of re-customizing my system.

5
I'm not sure if this is an issue with v3.9.27 or something else turned on Windows Defender. I run Kaspersky Total Security as my antivirus and I'm reasonably sure I had turned off the Windows Defender software because it is NOT a good practice to run more than one antivirus software. After running all the steps in v3.9.27 I noticed that Windows Defender was running.

Using https://www.windowscentral.com/how-permanently-disable-windows-defender-windows-10 I turned off windows defender.

After running v3.9.27 Tweaking.com-Windows Repair I've noticed that the big windows preview no longer works when I mouse over the a thumbnail after mousing over an icon in the taskbar. Let me see if I can better describe this. Before running all the steps I could mouse over an icon in the taskbar, a thumbnail of each window for that icon would popup (this still happens), I could then mouse over any of the thumbnail images and then the full window would be displayed until I moved the mouse. This last action no longer works for me.
Example. Let's say I have five word documents open, in the taskbar I see the word icon, I mouse over the icon and I see five thumbnails, I could then mouse over any of the thumbnails and the full size window would be displayed until I moved the mouse. If I wanted to activate the window I would click on the thumbnail.

I really liked the temp normal window view and would like to get it back.  :cheesy:
I'm running the latest version of Win10 x64 1703 build 15063.138

I just went through all the steps using v3.9.27 Tweaking.com-Windows Repair and now my Mouse (Logitech M310) wheel is no longer working. Previously if browsing a web page I could click (press down) the wheel (keep the wheel pressed down) and then move the mouse to scroll the page or in SketchUp it would invoke the Orbit tool. Now neither work as expected. My system is a desktop running Win10 v1703 Build 15063.138

Tweaking.com Support & Help / v3.5.3 changed settings
« on: November 30, 2016, 10:04:02 pm »
Previously I had v 3.3.1 installed on my Win10 x64 system. I just upgraded to v3.5.3 and noticed that my settings had changed from the previous install.

Not a big issue but annoying and totally unexpected.

Is there a way to restore specific keys. I recently noticed that my MS Office "fileMRU" keys had been deleted. I'm not exactly sure but I have several backup of my registry and hopefully the lost keys are in one of them. At this point I'm lost.

Tweaking.com Support & Help / System File Check is not successful
« on: March 15, 2016, 01:48:17 am »
I'm now working on my wife's laptop and it seems to have a lot of issues. Originally the system had Win7, this was upgraded to Win8, then Win8.1 and Win10 (all x64). The latest update was several months ago. Recently I noticed that Acronis True Image was not creating backups and the system was running rather slow. Possibly my best choice is to perform a clean install of Win10.
I installed TC-Windows Repair and stated performing the steps.

The first real issue I encountered was with CHKDSK. The HD has several partitions (see the image). When I first got the system I partitioned the drive to separate the data from the OS and assigned the drive letter "A". Thus when I got to the step to run CHKDSK I selected all three partitions (A, C and D) (the D partition is the original Lenovo recovery partition, this I should just remove, I will never use it. It was about 2200 hours when I rebooted the system to let CHKDSK run. The next day at 1000 hours CHKDSK was still processing the C drive but stated it was 100% complete, so I let it run. At 1400 hours it was still running and my wife was bugging me to use the PC so I forced a power off, removed the battery, pressed the Power on button, installed the battery and booted up the system. Later that night about 2200 hours I setup to run CHKDSK on the C partition and let it run (BTW CHKDSK /R was used for all runs). This time the next day it had successfully run.

I then worked my way up to the SFC and when it ran it stated that files were corrupt but could not be fixed.
I then ran DISM and it failed "The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the component store cannot be repaired."

At this point I was a bit lost and just left it. Tonight I tried again and again it failed. I read the page at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825020.aspx On my desktop I shared out C:\Windows and on the laptop I access this as the Z drive then ran DISM with the following (CMD window as admin).
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:z: /LimitAccess

Again it failed, the DISM log is attached. Tis late and I'm going to bed...

Tweaking.com Support & Help / Chkdsk freezes at 12%
« on: February 23, 2016, 08:35:28 pm »
I'm in the process of a Win10 clean install on a rather complex desktop. I currently have 12 HDs one of which is a SSD (this is my boot drive). I was testing a beta version of Restore Point Creator which encountered a bug and in the pop-up the author suggested Windows Repair and I've installed it (v3.8.3) and started working my way through the steps. Step 3 checks to see if Check Disk is needed and it did say it was needed. Thus I decided to let it perform a CHKDSK on all 12 drives and elected to run in safe mode.
    • The first issue I encountered was with check disk on one of my drives, it froze at 12&. I let it run over night but in the AM it was still stuck at 12%. I attempted several reboots but the system immediately seem to start with the drive where it was stuck and would not go any further. I powered off and unplugged the drive, powered the system and a short time later another drive seemed to be stuck. I powered off and unplugged all drives except for the boot drive (the SSD).
    • Now the system would boot but only in Safe Mode. I made numerous retries but all resulted in booting into Safe Mode. During this time I encountered several BSOD.
    • I have also installed Restore Point Creator and it is scheduled to create a daily restore point at 0100 hours and at this time I performed a system restore using the RP that was created this AM. The restore was successful but still I could only boot to Safe Mode
    • I opened a CMD window as admin and issued "bcdedit /deletevalue {default} safeboot" and was then able to reboot successfully.
  • I then opened Hard Disk Sentinel (it is always running in the background) and attempted to run the safe disk read/write where no data is destroyed but all of the drives I attempted to use could not be locked by HDS. I will be contacting the author to report this strange behavior.
I know of one other issue I currently have on the system but for now I don't want to go down this rabbit hole unless it will help with this situation. It has to do with the drives I've shared out. I have three laptops all running Win10 and one cannot access any of the drives, the other two can access some of the drives. Prior to installing Win10 on the desktop Win8.1 was installed and all laptops could access the drives. The drives have been shared with full permissions and I'm using simple networking.

Update 02/24
Last night I ran the READ test via Hard Disk Sentinel (Test - Reads the disk surface to verify if all sectors are accessible and readable. The test is safe, it does not affect stored data. Disk problems may remain hidden and revealed disk issues are NOT fixed (like with ScanDisk).) See the image for my successful results.

I also ran the ScanDisk utility (Driver properties > Tools > Check > Scan drive --- It reported that something was fixed, I ran it a 2nd time and in the Event Viewer in the General section I see the following. Both reports for the two runs are the same. I just ran the ScanDisk a 3rd time and the report is the same.

Chkdsk was executed in scan mode on a volume snapshot.
