The problem I'm now having after r u nning WR is the laptop is restarting when I click shutdown. I don't know what caused this but it may have started after a update. I can try going to MS as suggested.
In the meantime I feel I want to go back to where I was but I don't have a restore point. Does anyone have an opinion on whether the registry backup will take me back or not?

if there is a known issue with the restore points not being created then there should either be a warning or take the feature out until it can be fixed or at least let is say it was NOT completed successfully. The fact that it says it was completed led me to believe i had a backup and was good to go.
Im not sure a registry restore will get me completely back and quite frankly im not to trusting right now. Do you think restoring the registry will get me back to the last state the machine was in?

I have used this program before and with great success but this time not so good.
Question one is which feature do i NOT run to stop the program from defaulting my apps such as .PDF files opening with Edge instead of Adobe.

Question two is Why? I ran the program and did  everything as instructed like usual. When I ran the "make a restore point" the program said it was made successfully and i moved on and ran the fixes. when it was done i was not sure i wanted to keep the fixes and tried to find the restore point but its not there. It doesn't seem to create a restore point. Is it created somewhere else instead of the normal place in windows? If so Why? I had to create one manually now but its too late.

The problem i am having is with a Lenovo ultrabook. It was running windows 8.1 and updated to Win 10. Its been great but since one of the last updates the problem is that the system will not boot to windows the first time. It just sits forever at the Lenovo logo. But if i force shutdown and reboot all is well. I have found if i disable Turn on Fast Bootup it will work but i still seem to have a long shutdown waiting period, sometimes not shutting down, just spinning and spinning. Have you heard of this?

Sorry I was away from this for a while.
Boggin....the link worked and I was able to read the article. I checked all scheduled tasks and none are anything I shouldn't have.
Shane, I am uploading the System Events log. Is that what you wanted to see?

New info: It still shuts down after a day or two. I ran the Dell Diag Utility (F12 on bootup) on every device from the mother board to the hadr drives and ram, its all coming back passed all tests. The other day it shutdown and when I rebooted it came up with no boot drive (0) But on a reboot its been fine and I ran the drive tests again and its good. Its a one year old Seagate drive.
I think this is the power supply and I will have to go get one an try it. I just haven't had time and now I may be facing blizzard in the next couple of days!!!! I hate snow:(

Yeah I thought about that and i would like to see that KB article but the link isn't working.

The thing is,  a scheduled event should happen at a scheduled time on a regular basis and I haven't seen a pattern. It sometimes goes for hours and sometimes days (1 or 2) . Its been on since 9:00am yesterday and I ran the Windows Repair the night before. So far its been OK...but we will see.

Not a reboot. It completely shuts down going through the normal Windows shutdown process.   When I turn it back on all is well, no errors or messages about the shutdown and everything works fine.
I will try the things you mentioned.

I am having a strange problem. I have a Winxp SP3 (i know I need to move on to a new system but its not my main machine) that will randomly shut itself off. It has gone for a day or two and sometimes an hour or two. There is no error message and no good reason for it. I have a good battery in the UPS. The system event viewer doesn't show anything either. I have run all kinds of virus checks, Malwarebytes, and tried CCleaner. I looked in the System Scheduler and found nothing there. I started to suspect a fan not running or a heat problem but I vacuumed it out (it wasn't bad, I usually keep up with  that ) and I kept an eye on the fans and they are running. I dont know of a utility to test the temp of the CPU and the fans running, so if you can recommend a utility I will try that. I just ran the Windows repair All in One and am waiting to see if fixed the issue. I did not check off everything , just what I thought would have to do with the problem I am having. Have you ever seen this?

The windows repair worked great and fixed another computer I had a problem with.

Ok,so here's where I'm at....I ran Windows repair a second time and thought it could have made things worse, that's why I asked.I did run chkdsk with the two switches. Now I tried combofix and I have a few questions. after I installed it when I first ran it it said that it could take up to 10 minutes or on a badly infected drive actually double the time ....well I ran it for awhille there was a blinking cursor for about 8 hours I didn't know if I should stop it or not there were no indications that it was running other than a flashing cursor and there was not even any activity on the hard drive light.  I finally stopped it and then ran it again. this time after a while the cursor stopped blinking. Again no indication that it was done or that it did anything. By the way the only way I could find to stop it was to reset the computer by holding down the Power button.
Later I realized that  it looked like windows update downloaded updates, so I tried to install them and it worked! Also every thing seems to work now.
How do I remove combofix?
Is this how combofix works?
Do you think it fixed the problem or is it a coincidence? It didnt say anything like it was done or it found anything.
Do I care about the recovery console that was installed, and will it be removed?

Yeah I hate that too......

Is it ok to run the Windows repair tool a second time ? Was that a bad thing to do?
I failed to mention that I ran Memtest86 and all is well there. For bad sectors do you mean chkdsk? I did that too. I have not tried combofix. I guess thats next.

Shane, correct this on your initial post.... My goal is to teach and to help, and you wont learn if you do ask...

I have a problem with a Win XP machine. Its Windows XP Pro and 2GB Ram This machine had a problem with MS updates last year and your program fixed it and its been great. Just the other day I was using Firefox and all of a sudden the screen went to "Logging off" and I had to reboot. Since then I have a variety of issues. MS updates all fail and the system is very slow. I ran Malewarebytes and Superantispyware and Norton. Then your Windows repair. Now nothing is fixed and even if I turn off Norton product tamper protection I cannot run System Restore either. I tried to run the repair utility again and it keeps saying failed in the running log. I also cannot get the VSS to work.
