« on: April 28, 2020, 06:38:49 pm »
I am just running permissions in Windows 10 in safe mode.

getting 1%-3% CPU and has been at 99% for maybe 40 minutes? Drive read/write is doing something.

would it be unusual to leave this for hours or overnight?

Thank you

Tweaking.com Support & Help / Restore Default User folders?
« on: April 15, 2020, 03:21:10 pm »
Somehow the the default downloads folder is missing in Windows File Explorer. I can see it if I use my other file manager Total Commander.

all my data and downloads are there, just not as far as Windows is concerned.

Should I run common repairs?

I have a picture of the user_shell_folder registry and it has *two* download folders listed. Not sure the easiest way to post a picture here.

Thanks

more or less impossible for her to do her own install.

unless I can figure out a workaround to do the upgrade will have to wait until I can visit, a few months I am guessing.

it's is working for her at least.

why do replies always go to spam in gmail? I have told gmail "not spam" many times.

It's a laptop and they are on lockdown, I am doing this remotely from the US, she is in Thailand, doing a fresh install more or less impossible

it's running okay with Win8 for now, I say pull that key off and toss it!

all my forum notifications go to spam, even tho I have whitelisted "not spam" several times.

thank you for your time.

I was able to repair all the corrupt files using DISM, but it looks like the UI problem is a stuck key - the left arrow. she has used air to clean it and it still sticks sometimes.

even with it working now and then, I am unable to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 10 since the OS was installed in Thai I guess? I have changed all language and region settings to English and still no go.

so, for now, Windows 8 is working!

how to post a picture inline ??

Thank you

This is windows 8 on my friend's laptop in Thailand.

been working on it for 3 nights now.

SFC /scannow stays 20 minutes at "beginning of verification phase... verification 100%" and just flashes and disappears.

I can run some programs, but hard to open folders or type. doing this remotely, or I would just format and reinstall.

can I run a command prompt from tweaking.com windows repair? I have the Pro version.

wonder if maybe stuck keyboard key? couldn't embed a video here is the link:

still hangs on MDAC/MS Jet after in-place repair install and removing office completely.

9
As far as I know yes I removed the whole officesuite and there were no viewers. I'll give it one more shot today why not.

10
Office will not save a file, it just closes. I have uninstalled and the repair still hung.

Way too much time to spend in an old copy of office like this!

I just wanted to fix it.

For now libreoffice works.

Thanks again

11
I ended up downloading the ISO file and mounting it to do the repair install and get this - that didn't fix the office issue! How can that be?

Needed it anyway I guess after infection.

12
yes, the in-place repair install is the way to go. on this PC it fails while creating the USB media for some reason.

trying to make an ISO now.

I suppose I could just mount the ISO and install from there?

13
yeah, buying office on ebay is tricky. we will see. maybe just go Office 2016.

I may have to do an in-place Win10 install over, see what happens after the long eset scan.

thanks again.

14
there was 1-3% mostly. I aborted and now running Eset online scan. PC was infected with some sort of bitcoin trojan at least.

Office 2003 repair did finish.

I uninstalled Office 2003. I wish there was a way to buy Office 2007 or 2010?

thanks

15
Windows 10 1803, ran chkdsk and sfc, HDD checked fine.

running in safe mode.

stuck 8 hours on Repair MDAC/MS Jet ... Registering 132 files.

reason for running is a problem with Office 2003 - I did an Office repair.

is it okay to abort?

thanks

right now the network works fine, except PC1 cannot be seen, even tho SMBv1 client and server is installed. I have a mapped drive and as soon an I access that from PC2, PC1 shows up in the network. so goofy.

17
I ran sfc /scannow and came up no integrity violations, went back to the network and all is well? hmm...

all working perfectly. who knows.

18
using Pro 4.0.15

3 PCs all Windows 10 Home 1709

network worked more or less, for some reason PC1 was not seen by PC2 at all, so I ran "Network Repair in Safe mode on PC1, now PC1 sees nothing at all.

I use usernames and passwords and SMBv1 client and server are installed on both machines.

I double checked all the sharing options and everything is correct.

I may have forgotten to make a restore point, I do have an image from a week ago.

thanks for any help.

It updated last night. I ran SFC /scannow it found errors and repaired all of them. Chkdsk found errors and repaired.

Its AMD A8-3800 not sure if it's affected, but I do see the KB4073290 Jan 17th out of cycle patch, might be worth installing?

thanks again

It booted! after deleting in files in the SoftwareDistribution folder and rebooting a couple times its back with a super old version of windows.

AMD CPU, I think there is a recent Microsoft update for this.

can I run my new Windows Repair Pro now?

thanks for all the pointers.

21
this command just give me "syntax of command is incorrect"

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

I booted to Win10 PE USB and was able to delete the files in the SoftwareDistibution folder.

still only get "Restoring your previous version of Windows" forever.

22
well, unable to get anywhere on this.

dead end.

23
I guess it's trying to update to 1709 from an earlier version, maybe 1703?

so if I am able to get it to restore back to an earlier time/version, and it boots up, using the 1709 boot disk to install Win10 over older version will perform an upgrade and still leave all apps and files?

I'm a little confused on "double click on its drive" I guess you mean the install media, in this case, would be a DVD with 1709.

what would be wrong with running Windows Repair if it boots back to an earlier time and reset Windows Updates?

maybe windows update is working just not able to install due to maybe a driver issue etc.

thank you

24
I have a PC that is in a constant loop and cannot install a Windows 10 update. keeps trying to restore to a previous version of windows.

have not been able to get it to boot into Safe Mode.

Possible to run Windows Repair from a WinPE boot disk?

it fixed an update problem with another PC here.

just purchased the pro version.

Thank you
