I get a similar box in Sound except that it doesn't have a fourth folder
caled Communications.
Also, where your devices are shown mine just says
No Audio Devices Are Installed.
The bottom part of the box is exactly the same.
The top part just has  Playback Recording Sounds but no Communicating.

That's an install disk then.

The System Restore option is to restore to a prior time when the computer was working fine.

Normally you would also get an option to restore with s system image you had created earlier, but I don't see that in what you have listed

I'm not sure what the separate Repair option does unless that takes you to the Recovery Environment where you can use either of the other options you have listed.

If the latter is the case, which option did you use ?

It would be a hell of a coincidence if your audio device had given up the ghost following a repair, so I'd still favour a driver problem.

As you have already downloaded the driver for it, perhaps it would be best if you contacted Medion.

https://www.medion.com/gb/service/contact/

There's something else you can check though.

In All Control Panel Items click on Sound and then on your Realtek and select Properties.

You may find another Properties button to click on and then you can check if it is enabled.

I used the system restore option because I had got it accepting manual restore points shortly before that
but they were not holding for any length.
The present problem with the Windows updates seems to be caused, in part anyway, by not being able to
create restore points.

In the Properties section in Device Manager under General it says No Drivers Are Installed For This Device.
Under Driver it gives an install date of 13 10 2015and gives a long list of driver details.
Under Update Driver it says that the best driver for this computer is already installed and up to date.
Under details it says Value Realtek High Definition Audio.
There was no other mention of Properties.

Strange that one heading says No Drivers installed and another says Best Driver is installed and up to date.
Have never had a problem with audio but it is only following the repair.

The Fix It confirmed that I do not have an active sound device.
It then said Plug In Speakers or headphones for the following devices:
SpeakerRealtek High Definition Audio
Realtek Digital Output.
When I click on the cancelled desktop speaker it says No Audio Output Device Installed.
I am getting no sound at all on streaming video or any video.
Machine is Medion MD96290 MSN 30006951.

The options on the Recovery Disc are:
Install
Repair
Sub Menu:
Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows complete PC Restore
Windows Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt.
I think that the System Restore is to ceate a restore point.

Hope above helps.
Would appreciate having your views when you get the time.
Have to leave myself now for a while, returning later.
Thanks.

Many thanks Boggin.

Thanks Boggin.
The disc was called a Recovery Disc.
I did download the sound driver from Medion.
My model no. is Medion MD96290 and MSN is 30006951.
I checked in Device Manager.
There is no yellow flag for sound device - Realtek - and Windows search
says that the best driver for my system is already installed and up to date.
Still there is no sound, still the speakers are crossed out on the desktop
with a message saying No Audio Output Device is installed.
It failed to return after the repair.

I'm sorry, I don't understand the question.
Do you mean what was downloaded, or what options did I get?
I can't remember the options as I was totally focused on Repair.
Most things that were already on seemed to download, although
I have no sound - Speakers are crossed out on desktop with a notice
saying No Audio Output Device is installed - and current Windows updates
appear not to load for some reason.

Thanks Boggin.
I have a Recovery Disc that came with the laptop.
Regarding the backups, I have read that a USB stick might be best of this.
Would that not kisk reinstalling possibly files?
I have never used one so I am not sure how good they are or what size might
be needed for the task.
CD's and DVD's have also been mentioned for downloading to.

No, not over yet.
Looks like I am going to have to grasp the nettle and either perform a Factory Reset of the
laptop or a clean install of Windows.
I would appeciate opinions as to which should be best.
Factory reset is probably the easiest.
Also, I don't have external back up so I would like to know how best to back up Firefox,
Thunderbird desktop mail and folders, Spamhilator email spam prevention programme,
and Rainlendar events planning programme.
Thanks in advance for recommendations.

Hi.
Sorry for delay in getting back.
The repair seemed to go well from the Recovery Disc.
However, there were problems afterwards and since.
Ended up being late for work due to events.
On booting up after the repair Services would not load.
Then I ran in to a lot of difficulty trying to install the current round of
Window's updates.
On return home tonight I found that the machine took an eternity to boot
and that 23 instellations failed to load.
Also, am advised that No Audio Output Device is installed.
It is early days yet and I would like to see how it settles down.
It is great to see the machine restored to life as it is a favourite.
Very much appreciate all the help and support I have received.

Many thanks Boggin.
You sure put a lot of work into that, which I really appreciate.
As it is after midnight I won't get to do anything tonight.
Just as a matter of interest, it does say on the Recovery Disc:
This DVD contains the 32 = bit operating system.
Laptop name and model number  Medion MD96290.
Thanks again.

Windows has failed to start in Vista.
I am advised to insert installation disc.
My disc is labelled Recovery Disc.
When I insert it it does not change the screen.
Language setting is supposed to come up followed by next.
I am then supposed to press Repair Your Computer.
Is this the wrong disc?
Only other one I have is called
Application and Support Disc Generic.

jraju.
I just want to restore regedit to the default setting.
I did not make any changes or delete anything.
Your help with this would be appreciated.
Thank you.

13
regedit has changed appearance.
The menu on the left has changed to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT       NAME Default  TYPE RegSZ   DATA

I need to restore this to original.
Think I might have clicked on an item in the left menu whefirst opened.

A Trojan was found - Trojan.Siredef - but machine is now clean.
Panda antivirus is running all the time.
I am not experienced enough to play around with the registry.
VSS is enabled - stsrted - and set to manual.
sfc /scannow and chkdsk have been run numerous times.

15
OK.
Thanks.

16
Afraid it didn't work.

Hi Julian.
Back to Catastrophic Failure in System Restore.
No longer able to manually create restore points.

19
OK.
Thanks.

20
Thanks Shane.
Do you mean a Windows Tool or the repair facility in Tweaking?

21
Hi Julian.
Sorry for delay in getting back.
My friend was unable to help.
Someone else suggested ticking boxes in Tweaking Repairs and this resulted
in partial success in so far as System Restore is available to me again.
The "Catastropic Failure" notice has gone and I am able to create Manual Restore Points.
Problem is that newly created restore points are not holding overnight but at least some
progress has been made and I am able to have restore points for a time which is better than
nothing at all, and a lot better than the situation was previously.
I presume that things are going in the right direction although I don't know where to go from here.

22
No, problem not yet resolved.

23
I tried there a few minutes ago and it seemed to open alright.

24
Opened in Opera for some reason.
When I click on Expandable String Value the wording only increases or decreases in size.
Have to leave it there for today as it is quite late.
Thanks again for your time and patience Julian.

25
I still need the anxiety tablets!
For instance: How do you create an expandable string Value?
