No, dragged the SFCFixScript.txt onto the SFCFix.exe.  I also hoped for a relatively quick reply, but patience....

Apologies Boggin, I didn't see your Post#15 and replied to your Post#14 instead.

I tried zipping and attaching it, but it just didn't seem to work - whether it was too big or not I don't know, but the uploader worked OK

Ah I see; I followed the sysnative 'guidance' for an initial post on this error code 80073712 and this requires submitting a copy of both the SFCFix and CBS logs which I did - see

Thank you Boggin.

Do you think I'll be able to make any sense of the CBS log ?

Certainly Boggin.

Here goes :

By the way, just to let you know, I've also posted on now, as I indicated I might.

So, thanks Julian and Boggin for your suggestions.  Recounting my actions so far:

I couldn't install KB3146963 and got error code 80073712.

Web searches suggested the MS "solution", so I ran sfc /scannow and got 3 errors which I then web searched, and as a result I ran the "pre-scan".  The pre-scan revealed the issues which I reported in my original post (15/4/16).  I implemented Julian's cat files and these "solved" the pre-scan issues.  But I still couldn't install KB3146963.

Subsequently I've run SURT three or four times and run the full set of Repairs a couple of times.  But still, I can't install KB3146963.

I've just run SFCFix.exe and this has reported "CBS & SFC total detected corruption count:  2", but it couldn't automatically fix these faults.

I'm minded to follow the advice of the SFCFix.exe log and seek advice on

Any better suggestions ?

Many thanks Julian

Your advised approach and files did the trick as far as the pre-scan "fail" is concerned - that is the pre-scan now completes without error.

However, I still get an error code 80073712 on a failed install of Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3146963) Download size: 1.0 MB

Any suggestions on where I can post this problem ?

  • Scan Complete - Problems Found!

  • You can use the Repair Reparse Points or Repair Environment Variables tools at the bottom of this Window if needed.

  • While problems have been found, you can still run the repairs in the program.

  • But for the best results it is recommended to fix the problems reported in this scan if possible.

  • If you need help fixing any of the items in the log, just post in the forums at for help.
