General Computer Support / Re: System Restore or Registry Backup Restore?
« on: February 05, 2022, 03:56:54 pm »
I think they do the same job but I would prefer restore points.

WR's option to create a restore point doesn't actually create a restore point, so it's best to manually create one before using WR and I always boot into Safe Mode before restoring from one.

127
I've emailed Shane about this with a link to your thread.

Do Verizon on their own label the website as malicious.

You can check this by turning off McAfee.

Neither Kaspersky or TotalAv have problems with this website.

I haven't had any word back from Shane on this yet.

I'll send him another email.

130
I'm in email conversation with Shane who has given me access to a tool where I will be able to enable or block licences, but there seems to be a problem with the password which I'm waiting for Shane to get back to me on.

Did you create a manual restore point before running WR ?

Even if you didn't, the program will have backed up your registry before running which you can restore.

I'll run WR tomorrow to see if it changes my icons.

By system tray do you mean taskbar ?

132
Can you boot into Safe Mode with Networking to see if it changes to Pro as something could be blocking it from the Internet.

If your machine hasn't been infected then no policy changes will have occurred.

Run an antivirus scan to be sure.

You could uncheck Repair #12 which repairs icons which is probably the reason for why your icons are behaving in this way.

What is the reason you are running Windows Repair on your Win 7 ?

135
Hi Hank - I email Shane with a link to your thread.

No.

See if the steps in this article help - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/windows-server/performance/rebuild-performance-counter-library-values

In Event Viewer expand Windows Logs then click on Application which may list the errors that need to be fixed.

General Computer Support / Re: Internet explorer cant connect

I've identified you as a prolific spammer but for the moment I'll treat this as a genuine query.

I think IE has generally been superseded by Edge but check to see if IE will connect in Safe Mode with Networking.

As Palemoon works then these cmds may not resolve, but you could try them anyway.

Open either a Command Prompt (Admin) or Powershell (Admin) and enter these cmds -

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

shutdown /r /t 00

Then see what things are like after the reboot.

140
That should be of help to Shane.

Have you tried starting the Perfmon.exe as it suggests ?

141
Does Event Viewer list anything for when you attempted the repair install or anything else of significance ?

I'll email Shane with a link to your thread to see what he can come with.

142
What produced those logs ?

Have you tried running the Windows Repair program in Safe Mode with Working if you can get into that mode.

Normal mode will do if you can't.

143
If you have access to another machine you can create Win 10 install media after reading https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You will need an USB of at least 8GB.

You will need to boot up with that, navigate to the Install screen and select Repair your computer.

This will give you similar Troubleshoot and Command Prompt options where you would then enter the same cmds.

The partition letter will be different in this case.

When done, remove the USB and reboot.

Open Windows/File Explorer - This PC - insert the USB and double click on its drive.

This will open to its files where you then double click on setup Application.

This will perform a repair install which won't affect installed programs or personal files but should sort your Permissions.

You could then see how Windows Repair runs.

144
Can you switch the machine on then power shut down as soon as the Windows logo comes up.

Do this another twice but leave it to boot up on the third go.

This should bring up a Preparing automatic repair screen and then Diagnosing your PC.

Click on Advanced options - Troubleshoot - Advanced options - Command Prompt.

Follow the prompts then at the cmd prompt enter these cmds -

bcdedit |find "osdevice"

Using your partition letter instead of the x I have used, enter -

dism /image:x: /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=X:\ /offwindir=X:/Windows

Restart then try Windows Repair again to see if you get the same error.

145
The latest version of Windows Repair is Win 11 compatible so I'm not sure why you lost your files.

Have you tried your restore points to see that fixes it, although a restore point doesn't normally affect files but it may restore what caused them to be lost.

What was the reason you ran Windows Repair ?

I've noticed that you have been reported for Spamming and Brute Force attacks so I hope this was a genuine query.

This is Shane's reply -

The reason those errors happen is windows goes through the whole list of apps to reinstall and some of them will do that, no way to avoid it, so the errors can be ignored.

I don't know why you have mentioned Vista but in Win 10, go Start - type defrag and press enter when it comes up.

If that doesn't work then open either a Command Prompt (Admin) or Powershell (Admin) and enter these cmds -

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow

Enter exit to close the cmd window and try again.

Let me know what the sfc /scannow reports.

This article lists some steps you can take to resolve this error -

https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/how-to-fix-netio-sys-blue-screen-errors-on-windows/

If the sfc /scannow reports it is unable to fix all corruption then run this cmd followed by another sfc /scannow which should then report it was able to fix all corruption or that it couldn't find any integrity violations.

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Jim cam sometimes take a while to reply - sorry about that.

I'll email Shane to see if you can get a better response, although I have to wait sometimes for replies from him.
