General Computer Support / Re: USB - the disk is write protected
« on: December 16, 2021, 03:35:47 pm »
Have you tried all of the steps in this article -

https://www.eassos.com/how-to/the-disk-is-write-protected.php

Just click on each to expand.

This article has some suggestions for resolving this error, but before you perform the sfc /scannow - enter this cmd first -

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Sometimes a sfc /scannow on its own can report corruption it is unable to repair - the dism cmd will negate that.

What are you using to post with ?

I assume that's a Win 10 install USB ?

If it is, boot up with it again, go to the Advanced options and select Start-up Repair to see what that reports.

If it reports that it is unable to fix then select Command Prompt and enter these cmds -

bcdedit |find "osdevice"

For clarity that is a Pipe symbol before find.

Hopefully it will give you a partition letter.

If it doesn't or gives you an error message then you will need to perform a fresh install.

If it does then using your partition letter instead of the X I have exampled and enter chkdsk X: /f

That may report that it has made corrections to the file system, but primarily you are looking to see if it reports any KBs in bad sectors - hopefully it won't but it needs checking.

If that comes back clean then enter these cmds, again using your partition letter instead of the X I have exampled.

dism /image:X:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=X:\ /offwindir=X:\Windows

Enter exit to close the cmd window, remove the USB and select the option to continue to boot to see if it does.

Let me know how you get on.

As you run Windows Repair in Safe Mode with Networking, it should be okay, but have you updated Log4j to version 2.15.0 to help mitigate the exploit ?

This appears to be a known problem.

This article suggests checking for an update but if there isn't one then you may need to wait for the next update according to the article.

https://techdows.com/2021/03/edge-shows-profile-error-w-some-features-may-not-be-available.html

I don't know if these cmds would resolve but you can give them a try.

Open a Command Prompt (Admin) or Powershell (Admin) then run these cmds -

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow

Enter exit to close the cmd window then try Edge again.

I haven't been offered Win 11 yet so am unable to check out WR.

I see that you ran WR in Safe Mode so most non required programs should have been closed.

I'll pass this onto Shane.

General Computer Support / Re: supported printer driver
« on: December 10, 2021, 02:04:57 am »
I Googled for drivers but there was nothing that I've already had.

It's very rare these days that I need an envelope but I like to have the full capacity of whatever I use so will try and get around to contacting Canon and hope I get the same service as you had with Epson.

That's great news - perhaps I should contact Canon :)

Tweaking.com Support & Help / Re: Is there a bootable version
« on: December 09, 2021, 12:26:28 pm »
The program needs to be run from within Windows but you can create a Hiren's Boot USB which will get you up and running.

https://www.wintips.org/how-to-create-hirens-bootcd-usb-disk/

Once you are back up you can either download and install Windows Repair or the portable version onto an USB which you can run on any Windows machine.

I've recently bought a Canon printer and on checking the envelope options, size 10 isn't listed so it looks like my printer doesn't support size 10 either.

Perhaps you could contact Epson - I don't think it's a failing of the envelope program, but I'll check with Shane.

I've passed this one onto Support.

Glad that was of help.

Take care and stay safe.

The Portable version is to load onto an USB which you can run on any machine, so use the Direct Download one to install it.

The Mirror one is an alternative to the Direct Download but the Direct Download is the one I use.

Hope this clarifies things for you.

194
I'm very sorry to hear about your illness and hope it doesn't impact you too much.

Insufficient disk space invariably refers to the Temp folder being overly populated.

Go Start - type $temp% and press enter.

Press CTRL and a together to highlight then CTRL and d together to delete then follow the prompts.

You will need to empty the Recycle Bin afterwards.

You can use a Majorgeeks link to download the WR update.

195
That's great news but I'm puzzled that it remained resolved after enabling all of the items in the start up menu.

That should have identified the culprit - but as it's resolved I guess that will have to remain a mystery as I can't think of an explanation for that.

196
I'll be emailing Shane on Wednesday to see if his personal problems are now over as I explained in a PM to you.

I'll include a link to your email when I do so that he can contact you direct.

197
I've just updated to 4.12.1 and while I had to wait for the files to download. it didn't take 20 secs.

At which point are you experiencing this 20 sec delay ?

Between WinPatrol and CryptoPrevent, I would have suspected CryptoPrevent as the cause.

Can you right click on the taskbar and select Task Manager then disable all items under Startup and try the install again.

I'm going to see if the ISO will load onto a DVD even though it's 5.5GB.

It won't - I've already tried it.

Follow the steps in this article to see if they help.

https://www.itpro.co.uk/operating-systems/34614/how-to-fix-the-windows-10-start-menu-if-its-frozen

Run the dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth before the sfc /scannow if you have to proceed to that one.

You can copy & paste the long commands in the article to the command prompt to eliminate any typos.

You could perform a chkdsk /r to ensure your HDD is okay but given these errors follow a fresh install of Win 10 then it's possible the install you are using could be corrupt.

You can create a new install USB after reading https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10

This defaults to English but you can select the German version after unchecking the box for the recommended version and using the dropdown.

General Computer Support / Re: Running into windows 10 update issues
« on: November 22, 2021, 03:37:20 pm »
Win 10 has very few updates - usually just one or two cumulative updates and one for the MSRT so I don't know how many are in the few that you state.

I've identified you as being reported for spamming and brute force attacks, but should your post be a genuine query then I'll tell you which commands to run from either a Command Prompt (Admin) or Powershell (Admin)

dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow

Enter exit to close the cmd window and try the updates again.
