I'm still getting that alert message on a newer notification.

202
Thanks for the congrats and the same to you for your position on the Bleeping Computer forum.

I used to have CryptoPrevent but had also dumped that - can't remember now why though.

I also used to have the free version of Malwarebytes but that started causing problems so that went as well.

I had been a long time user or Norton but when I tried to open it, I was starting to just get a black square instead of its UI - I now use Kaspersky Total Security which keeps me safe.

As you only notice the delay on an install, then perhaps you could forget about it, but come back if you get the same problem on an update.

203
I'm not sure what the process monitor would show you but as you have installed WR, then you could just forget about the delay.

You need to reinstall your antivirus program.

Are you saying that CryptoPrevent and WinPatrol PLUS can no longer be reinstalled if you uninstall those ?

204
You could try uninstalling Acronis as it's starting to point to your security software, but you only need to install WR once apart from updates, so it may be a trivial inconvenience - but it shouldn't be happening.

I've emailed Shane with a link to your thread for his consideration.

206
Well it shouldn't be happening and the fact that it doesn't occur in Safe Mode does suggest that it could be something in your start up menu if none of your security programs are to blame.

You just click on whichever you want to use, but I would advise creating a restore point first before each.

208
Having more than one active antivirus program can cause problems.

It may be worth Googling to check if any conflict with any of the others.

You could try putting www.tweaking.com into their exclusions lists to see if it helps

It could be also because of something you have installed.

Right click on the taskbar and select Task Manager then under Startup disable all items then restart and try again.

If that resolves then you will need to enable one item at a time until the delay returns.

If there is still a delay, then go Start - type msconfig and press enter.

Under Services check the box to Hide all Microsoft Services and disable all - Apply - OK and restart to see if there's any improvement.

If there is then you will need to go back into Services and enable two or three at a time - Apply - OK - Restart.

If disabling all non-MS services makes no difference then go back into msconfig and check the button for normal start up.

Hopefully one of those suggestions will resolve.

I'd follow the suggestions in that article to see if they do resolve.

The dism cmd is -

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Follow that with sfc /scannow and try the updates again.

Were you attempting to upgrade to Win 11 ?

On the remaining two emails I can reply to, the only option next to Reply is Forward so I'm unable to see any headers.

My forum reply notifications also go into the Spam box.

Sometimes an antivirus program can hang on to files after checking them.

Can you try the uninstall/reinstall in Safe Mode with Networking.

In this mode all 3rd party programs are isolated.

You don't need to uninstall WR to update it so try just reinstalling it after the uninstall/reinstall in normal mode but let me know if there is any improvement in Safe Mode with Networking.

I still don't understand what you mean about the advanced tabs.

Are they the advanced options in WR ?

214
I fully uninstalled my Pro version and used the direct download as you had and there was no delay at all.

It's possible that your Temp folder could be a bit full.

With all programs closed, go Start - type %temp% and press enter.

If it is highly populated then press CTRL and a together to highlight then CTRL and d together to delete and confirm.

Remember to empty your Recycle Bin.

Try the uninstall/reinstall again and let me know how you get on.

Which antivirus program are you using ?

Which version of Windows was preinstalled on the machine and can you post the full error code ?

That's a normal prompt for a chkdsk.

You type y and press enter then restart where the chkdsk will execute.

When the chkdsk has completed, go Start - type eventvwr and press enter when Event Viewer comes up.

When Event Viewer opens ensure Event Viewer (Local) is highlighted - if it isn't then just click on it.

Expand Windows Logs - click on Application - Action - Find then type chkdsk into the Find box and press enter.

Cancel the Find box to read the log in the pane below.

Primarily you are looking to see if it reports any KBs in bad sectors.

If it does then perform a chkdsk /r and when that has completed, create a system image onto external media and a System Repair disk in preparation for a full HDD failure.

After you have performed the chkdsk, try Windows Repair again to see if it completes successfully and reboot.

I normally create a system image before running WR.

If the sfc /scannow still reports that it cannot repair files, then boot up with the USB and follow the steps to perform those cmds I've posted.

Hi Gary,

You can get errors when running a chkdsk from within the program as it doesn't run with any parameters..

It's best to run a Command Prompt as an admin and enter chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r

What did the chkdsk /f report ?

WR can act strange if it finds something wrong with the HDD.

I don't understand what you mean by the last two tabs.

WR has a standard UI so it will show to boot into Safe Mode.

Did you boot up with the install USB and run those cmds before running WR ?

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and download and run this uninstall utility from Avast -

I used to have MBAM years ago but it started causing me problems - can't remember now which but I ended up dumping it.

I now use Kaspersky Total Security.

Have you tried putting the website into the exclusions list.

You could manually check if a website is safe with these tools -

A repair install may resolve your problems but you will need Win 10 install media which you can create after reading https://www.google.co.uk/url?esrc=s&q=&rct=j&sa=U&url=https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-an-iso-file-for-windows-10-38547366-1dcb-7afd-1726-9eb222d72705&ved=2ahUKEwibpuOd0fDzAhUEt6QKHcOZCTcQFXoECAIQAg&usg=AOvVaw255oipgN4Pru6dW1TBNlOL

Click on the blue link in the page then scroll down the page for the instructions.

You will need an USB of at least 8GB.

Sorry for the long link for that but it didn't give me an option to copy the link for the actual ISO page.

When you have created the media, open Windows/File Explorer - insert the USB and double click on its drive.

This will open to its files where you would then double click on Setup Application.

This will start the repair install which won't affect your personal stuff or installed programs.

Hopefully this will revert the Permissions to default that you had changed.

However, you could first try booting up with the install media and select Repair your computer on the Install screen.

Navigate to the Command Prompt and enter these cmds -

bcdedit |find "osdevice"

For clarity that is a Pipe symbol before find and is the uppercase of \

Then using your partition letter instead of the X I have exampled, enter -

dism /image:X:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=X:\ /offwindir=X:\Windows

Enter exit to close the cmd window, remove the media and reboot to see if they have fixed anything.

You could perform another sfc /scannow in normal mode to see if it reports the same or no integrity violations.

The USB/DVD tool is just a program to create either a bootable disk or USB

You could format the USB then use the USB/DVD tool to load just the ISO onto the USB.

That ISO that you downloaded included SP1 whereas the 2011 disk may not.

When you've created the new USB, shutdown, insert the USB then tap F12 as you switch on.

You can then use the cursor keys to select the USB drive then hit enter.

This will take you to the Install screen where you click on Repair your computer.

Navigate to the Command Prompt and enter those cmds I've previously posted, or you can boot the machine up, go Start - click on Computor - insert the USB and double click on its drive.

This will open to its files where you would then double click on Setup Application which will perform the repair install, but you will need to find the product key first.

On re-reading your post, did you also copy the USB/DVD burner program onto the USB ?

That should only have the ISO on it otherwise the system won't boot from it.
