Use the Fix it button and then choose the aggressive mode - will be quicker than using the cmd prompt and then reboot before trying the updates again.

I think that Fix it is supposed to reset the RC Data Store.

So when you reregistered those files, are those the ones in Step 5 of this MS article ?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/971058

Your first link returned Preview Failed but I was able to look at them in the second.

Because I'm not sure what the Access Denied means in those error logs, I've emailed Shane to have a look at them - just hope he has time to do so.

That's an I/O error.

With the USB HDD connected can you open a Command Prompt (Admin) and enter chkdsk x: /f where x is the drive letter to see what that reports.

It looks like their shoddiness has save you a few bucks then :) - but I would think that Scott has built up a lot of good will and should you come across anyone else that has computer problems, you could recommend him for the repairs.

What error code is it giving you ?

Well, that could have given his business a bad rep if his employees aren't doing the job properly first time around, but wasn't part of the repair to renew the HDD and was that what they failed to do ?

BTW - Hope you are feeling better after your hospital stay.

I think I had similar in my WR log, but it's the Pre-Scan in Option 2 of the program I want you to run to see if that reports corruption as that can affect Windows Updates.

6584
A manual check for updates taking ages in Win 7 has been a widespread problem for a little while now and just waiting for them to come, usually has been the only solution - although manually installing a couple of specific updates has oiled the wheels for some.

You seem to have a different problem though and one I've never seen before and MS don't seem to give any help for that error in Win 7, other than perhaps to run a sfc /scannow.

See what the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) can do.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/what-is-the-system-update-readiness-tool

This is a little over a 500MB download and also does a check for updates so can also take a while to run and when done, you can view its log in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS

Double click on the Checksur one and that will open in Notepad - but first, run the Pre-Scan in Option 2 of Windows Repair and if there is any Package File corruption, open a thread in the Cat and Mum File Requests section, posting the Pre-Scan report.

So had they put in a bad HDD first time around - but it's good to see your friend came good for you.

Before you start the marathon, check the contacts on both ends of the data cable as they can oxidize which could be why the message.

The power cable may be fine, but it's worth checking all connections.

The full format should tell you if it has found any bad sectors it has roped off from being used, but as it has been in use this long, it may be down to physical factors like its connections.

Forgot to add, if you do need to full format, ensure you choose NTFS.

BTW - The Hero Member bit comes about because of the number of posts - not how helpful they may have been :)

When Googling how to fix that, a number of links came up which you may want to read through -

The final Pre-Scan Reparse Points highlighted missing files for a user account which was why I was going to suggest creating a new account.

I think that you are going to have to forget about that one and just use the new one.

I don't have an answer as to why accounts become corrupted - I guess that's just Windows ?

I thought you said that after creating the new account that you were able to download apps ?

So are you still getting the access denied error when downloading anything or is the problem still just with FB ?

It's possible that could be a bug of this latest update if that is all that is failing.

I've learned that MS servers were down yesterday but your problem predates that.

I was thinking of suggesting creating another account but that wouldn't address why this one should give so much trouble.

There may be a problem with FB and this update, but in the new account, can you check to see if a sfc /scannow still finds all of those errors.

That reparse point could be your local user account - are you able to log in with your local user account.

The pre-Scan snags an user account for me in Win 7 but it is an account that Norton put there and so far there aren't any answers from them into how to remove it - but I don't get the same warning about it as you do for yours.

I'll be going to bed for the night shortly myself.

Can you run the Reparse Point Repair and then redo the Pre-Scan to see if it comes up clean then do a chkdsk /f to see what it makes of the files sfc /scannow was unable to repair.

To view the full chkdsk report, go into Event Viewer and when it has read the data, expand Windows Logs then click on the name Application/Action/Find and in the Find box type chkdsk or wininit and press enter.

Cancel the Find box to read the report in the scrollable window.

You can copy & paste its output if it is substantial in any repairs or error messages by clicking on Copy/Copy details as text in the lower right pane then paste into the reply box.

Have you been logged in with your MS account when trying to download any apps ?

How are you getting on ?

No one else seems to be having problems with downloading apps when logged in with a MS account, but they probably don't have a CBS Log like you.

I've asked Shane to have a look at this for you, although I don't know when he'll get back as he is well behind with the work from his computer business.

EDIT - Can you run the Pre-Scan in Option 2 of Windows Repair.

I didn't expect it to return that message with all of that corruption.

Can you try SFCFix.exe again to see what that reports.

6597
Give the repair install time to complete and then install those two updates to see if that resolves.

When updates fail, sometimes installing just a few at a time has been known to work so I suppose you could give that a try and give the weeds a miss :)

Really going to have to go now though as my stomach is starting to think my throat is cut :)

I was hoping it may have been something simple :D

See if SFCFix.ex will run, but looking at the corruption in that log, I would say that you are looking at a Refresh, but see what this cmd reports -

dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth

This will tell you if the volume is repairable or not and if it says not then you are definitely looking at one of the Refresh methods - at least Win 10 gives you the option to reset without losing your personal stuff.

6599
I suppose at this stage you only have time to waste if it doesn't resolve, but at least you will be able to manually install those two updates before embarking upon the rest.

Did the repair install actually complete last time ?

I'm going to shove off for a bit as it's well past my evening meal time.

I'm not sure what that bit about logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios means.

Have you tried SFCFix.exe again after the cold boot ?

If it still fails then from a Command Prompt (Admin) see if this cmd will put an icon onto the Desktop which when double clicked would open the CBS Log into Notepad which you can then copy & paste into the reply box or zip it up and attach it.

This cmd works fine in Win 7 but not sure about Win 10.

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This cmd produces a cut down version of the CBS Log, just showing what it has and cannot repair.

You can copy & paste the cmd to the cmd prompt to avoid any typos if you want.

With Win 7 you can boot up with a comparable Win 7 SP1 install disk and perform an offboot sfc /scannow where the volume is checked against the install disk, but I don't know if that is possible with Win 10 as I don't think it has the same Recovery Environment as Win 7 has to select the x:>sources> cmd prompt.

I've just bought a Win 10 book but haven't had a chance to read any of it yet and as it's quite thick - I'd probably have to trawl through it to see if it has any alternatives to this.
