They must have been modified for Intel.

I've come across OEM modified graphics drivers before but never audio drivers - always thought that the ones for the OS were a one size fits all - but hey, we both learned something on this one :)

If you still have the Recovery Partition then factory reset it if it came with Win 7.

I don't know about Acer but some vendors allow you to create a set of Recovery disks which is a copy of the Recovery Partition which you can also factory reset with.

If none of the above are applicable then go to Acer Support, entering the details for your model and download the drivers from there - or you could try the Win 7 drivers from http://laptop-driver.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/acer-travelmate-3210-drivers.html but it looks like you would get some drivers through Windows Update.

Have you installed SP1 yet as that can be a stopper to getting some updates.

If the sfc /scannow doesn't help, see if these cmds can do anything for your slow boot ups.

Boot up as to select Safe Mode but select Repair your Computer instead.

Use the dropdown to change/confirm the keyboard/language etc. then navigate to the Recovery Environment (RE) and select Command Prompt then enter bootrec /fixmbr

That should return as successful.

Enter exit to close the cmd window then select Shutdown and then see if the boot up is any quicker.

If there's no or just a slight improvement the redo the steps to boot to the RE and enter bootrec /fixboot and see how it boots up then.

This is what those cmds do - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/927392

I wouldn't go poking around in there as you could do more harm than good.

Use a CD/DVD cleaning disk.

Did you run the MS Fix it for cannot read/write CD/DVD drive ?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us

I suppose it could be the codecs - see if K-Lite will do anything for you.

I'll get back to you on those docs Pete, but in the meantime can you run a command prompt as an admin by going Start - type cmd then right click on cmd and select Run as administrator - accept the UAC and enter sfc /scannow and if that reports it is unable to repair some files - run SFCFix.exe which will produce a more concise report which you can copy & paste.

While Shane will appreciate you purchasing the Pro version, it will not enhance the repairs.

You could open the program again in Safe Mode and use the registry back up option which will take you back to before the repairs, but I find the message about the repairs being recommended puzzling.

Does the laptop freeze with the mouse disconnected and just using the touchpad buttons and does the laptop still freeze with the mouse connected in Safe Mode with Networking ?

To get rid of the Ctrl+Alt+Delete logon - go Start - type netplwiz and press enter.

Under the Advanced tab and Secure logon, is the box checked for Require user to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete ?

If it is, uncheck it - Apply - OK and reboot.

When security programs fail to start, it can be a sign of infection, but did you get that error message before you ran Windows Repair ?

Can you go Start - type services.msc - press enter and check that the status of your services are as in this list - but don't download anything from there.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/236709-services-restore-default-services-windows-7-a.html

Can you also go Start - type devmgmt.msc and press enter then click on View/Show hidden devices and expand Non-Plug and Play Drivers and check for any yellow alerts there or anywhere else.

Where Pro programs are pre-installed, then the best option to restore them would be with a factory reset.

The ESET Free Online Scanner is a robust scanner that you could use.

http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

With ESET check the two boxes for PuPs and PuMs then click on Advanced and check those boxes, although there probably won't be any need to check the Archives box.

With this Trojan though, I'm not sure if the Proxy one would apply but you can check that to be on the safe side.

Where infections are concerned, it is best to download and run the scanners in Safe Mode with Networking as some infections will prevent any downloads to protect itself.

You can usually end Applications including scans in Task manager.

I had my first heart attack when I was 41 and another 3yrs later and I'm now 68.

I agree, without today's meds we'd probably both be dead.

So in Win 10 you would need to recreate the system tray shortcut from the program which would entail unpinning them as I'd first suggested ?

I tried Win 10 briefly on this machine and it didn't sit very well with the Start menu becoming dead with no option to do anything.

Cortana didn't recognise I was in the UK and using the English (UK) language, so I factory reset it and restored with a system image I'd created before the upgrade.

I didn't like Win 10 because for me, there was nothing I could do better in Win 10 that I could do easier in Win 7.

I'm very sorry to hear about that, Peter and hope your treatment goes well.

I have something called Atrial Fibrillation which is when the heart doesn't pump out all of the blood in one go, so have to take controlled meds to delay the coagulation to ensure that the next time it pumps, it doesn't pump out clots which would cause me a stroke.

I've often wondered why when we get old that we have to suffer ill health with it, but I suppose with all things, they degrade with age - so they become the rusty years :D

While the program can be launched from the system tray icon, I just normally use the desktop icon.

Have you tried unpinning and then repining them ?

In Control Panel/System and Security/Find and fix problems, Maintenance checks for broken shortcuts - see what that reports.

EDIT - Forgot you were running Win 10, so that may be different to how you do it in Win 7.

Are you talking about All Programs from the Start button - mine is to open the system tray icon, but do you not launch the program from the desktop icon ?

What does this one do for you - http://ultradefrag.sourceforge.net/en/index.html but what are you trying to achieve ?

I doubt if the average user even knows about defragging the MFT or even what the MFT is - they just get on with it - I certainly do.

Yes, I meant the AC adapter and the underside of the laptop there should be a battery you can remove.

Slide the release catch then pivot the battery upward and remove it from the computer.

To install the battery, insert the rear edge of the battery into the battery bay and pivot the battery
downward until it is seated. The battery release latch automatically locks the battery into place.

Hi Pete,

If the touchpad left button doesn't bring up the error, then shutdown, remove the AC and battery then hold the power button in for approx. 30 seconds.

Connect back up and restart - when the computer has booted up, reconnect the mouse to see if you still get the same error.

If you don't, this may have just been a glitch which the cold boot would have cleared.

Tom.

You haven't said which version of Windows you are using, as from Win 8.1 wireless doesn't normally work with Safe Mode but you can Ethernet connect to see if you can get the Internet.

You only need Networking for >=Win 8.1 because the program requires Internet to access the Component Store.

Boot up into Safe Mode with or without Networking then right click on the Tweaking.com icon and select Run as administrator to see if it will run then and then you should be able to carry out the Permissions reset and other repairs.

Does the same problem occur if you just use the left button on the touchpad with the mouse disconnected ?

Check for updates hanging in Win 7 has been a common complaint of late and the problem may be on MS's end.

Some have found that having their update settings set to auto and let them come themselves has been the easiest solution, whereas I've seen someone post that prior to running the Check for updates was to go to Installed Updates first and then they didn't have to wait so long before it found them.

Did you run the Pre-Scan in Step 2 to see if there were any errors reported with any of the files ?

If those services aren't starting however, then you could have other problems.

Run the program again in Safe Mode to see if you get the same report.

If you do then go Start - type cmd - right click on cmd and select Run as administrator - accept the UAC and enter sfc /scannow

If that reports it is unable to repair some files, then run SFCFix.exe which will produce a more concise report which you can copy & paste.

https://www.sysnative.com/niemiro/apps/SFCFix.exe

If the sfc /scannow reports no violations then go Start - type services.msc and press enter.

Scroll down to Background Intelligent Services - click on it and then on Start in the upper left pane to see if it will start then go onto do the same for Windows Module Installer.

The default setting for those two should show as Manual.

The Windows Update service should be showing as Started and Automatic (Delayed) although you can click on it then on Restart in the upper left pane.

Let us know if you have any problems with those.

No, DEFRAGGLER won't "defrag" the Master File Table. Tried it many times and it keeps failing.

In the notes under the Google link it says it does, although it isn't as specific in the article I'd linked - so thanks for the clarification.

However, this one does - http://ultradefrag.sourceforge.net/en/index.html
