Dialup is before my time  so I'll leave that to Shane or others.

It would be difficult to take a desktop to a friend's which is why I asked if you are using a desktop or a laptop.

Do you have any other devices that use the Internet ?

Can you give us the info I'd asked for in my previous post and how long does it stay up before going down ?

This could still be an ISP problem, so have you reported the fault to your ISP ?

« on: April 15, 2015, 01:38:06 am »
If you have used Windows support then I would assume you have used the recdisc command, but if you haven't, boot up into the Advamced Boot options (usually by tapping F8 as you switch on) and select Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

I normally use a DVD-R rather than a RW disc but if RWs have worked okay for you then continue.

Insert the disc then at the prompt enter recdisc

This should correctly identify the CD/DVD drive then follow the prompts.

Remove the disk when completed and to exit the Safe Mode enter shutdown or shutdown /r

The latter will reboot the machine back into normal mode.

If you still get any errors then I think it would be a factory reset, but Shane may have another workaround.

Either of the two options in http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html have proven successful with problematic icons which you can try, but I think I would restore to prior the Java and Flash problems to see if the favicons are reinstated.

I also find Anvi Browser Repair Tool useful for sorting out problems with browsers http://www.anvisoft.com/browser-repair-tool.html

Click on either of the applicable icons in the left pane and you'll see what is default reset.

You can then retry the Java updates.

Just going back through the thread - you could perform a chkdsk /r to see what that reports.

I think you would view its report in Vista as you would in Win 7 and this is found in Event Viewer.

Go Start - type eventvwr and press enter.

When it has read the logs expand Windows Logs, click on Application/Action/Find then type chkdsk or wininit into the Find box.

Cancel the Find box and read the log in the scrollable window.

Primarily you will be looking for any KBs in bad clusters.

If that comes back clean as well as saying it has fixed everything and no further action necessary, then see how it runs but as you have an OEM machine, you may have a Recovery partition which will allow you to factory reset the laptop after backing up all of your personal stuff.

Hi Shane - no help this time but did learn about another problem  :cheesy:

JFI - Java v8 u4.5 released today.

8781
copy c:\sethc.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe

Thanks.

8782
I have both Java versions should I want to run IE in 64 bit mode but have always installed Java using IE.

FF has picked those up so I've never had to download any special Java plug-in as you have to do for Flash Player for FF and I've never had or heard of the problem you've had.

Which Java version did you install first ?

I always use the See all Java downloads link then install the Windows Offline 32bit version before the 64 bit one.

We need some more details such as the version of Windows you are using and how do you normally connect to the router - wired or wireless ?

If using wireless can you connect when using an Ethernet cable ?

Are you using a laptop or desktop ?

As you can't connect in Safe Mode with Networking, that would suggest system files, drivers or the modem/router rather than an infection.

Are all of the lights on the modem and/or modem/router green - there should be 4 if using wireless and 5 when wired.

Let's try a power cycle first.

Switch off the modem, router (if separate modem and router), the computer and disconnect all cables for a couple of minutes.

Reconnect the cables then switch just the modem on (if applicable), wait for all of the lights to come on and then do the same for the router and then switch the computer on to see if you have a connection.

If you still don't have a connection then try these commands from the Command Prompt run as an administrator, but we'll need the info requested before we can look at other possible solutions if needed.

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /registerdns

exit

Now reboot and check the connection.

I found the Plug-in Container in the FF Folder in Program Files (x86) but nothing happened when I tried to open it.

I didn't understand the first article you had linked either, but it's weird that Java isn't showing in your Plug-ins.

I think I'd start by uninstalling/reinstalling FF but I don't know how you would back up your bookmarks if any - I just have FF as a spare browser and use IE 10.

After the reinstall check the plug-ins again and if necessary, reinstall Java.

What error messages are you getting to learn these KBs are missing ?

If they are no longer listed in Installed Updates then go to Windows Update and do a manual Check for updates where they should present.

Alternatively you can Goole the KB numbers to get the direct MS download links for your version of Windows.

8786
FF usually disables Java by default, but click on Tools/Add-ons and see if it's listed.

If it is then go www.pingtest.net as that requires Java for the Packet test to succeed and if it's working, you should get a pop-up to allow it to run.

Update on this - Just tried the ping test in my FF that has Java set to Ask to Activate and it didn't which resulted in not being prompted to allow Java and the Packet test failed, even though in Java's console under the Security tab I have it set to Allow in browsers.

I changed this to Always Activate and the Packet test succeeded along with the prompts to allow Java.

If you've allowed ASC to indiscriminately clean the registry, use its Recovery option and you should be presented with a number of dates when you did run its "tune up".

8788
Just for clarification, what was the command line you used to copy the original sethc.exe file back ?

A Win 7 Repair disk can be created on any Win 7 machine through Control Panel/System and Security/Back up your computer and clicking on the option in the top left pane, but other than giving you the Advanced Boot options including allowing you to navigate to the Recovery Environment, I'm not sure what help a Repair disk would be that you couldn't avail yourself of those options by tapping F8 as you switch on.

A SideBySide error is where one program conflicts with another as the description details but as it involves the WinSxS folder, I'll leave that for Shane to unravel, although I've never known CCleaner to cause any problems.

Did that error pop up when you ran CCleaner or did you delve into Event Viewer and have you ran another sfc /scannow yet ?

8791
Contact either Lenovo support from my link or Google for ASUS support, but I think Lenovo could have a list of compatible routers although this could be academic if your parents wouldn't return/change the router.

With the free version of CCleaner https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download - Tools/Startup you can check the scheduled tasks.

Mine has some for MS but to me they are unidentifiable, although a scheduled back up may be more identifiable.

8793
I get that wildcarding with my ISP and think it's probably the ISP making some extra money on the side as I don't have any problems with my ADSL.

I think it's probably time to find out if there are any known compatibility issues between the router and the adapter, although I don't know what you could replace either with but as your Kindle is also affected, then perhaps you need to look for another router.

There is one more thing that you could try if the router has that option and that is to change the Channel Width from 20/40MHz to just 40MHz.

That will maintain the n data transfer rate although I'm not sure if it would have any effect on the actual bandwidth speed, but you seemed to have tried everything else.

Is the router still under warranty ?

Is SAS set to scan on boot or any monitoring - check its Settings.

Have you ran another sfc /scannow since copying those Packages files across to see if now reports no integrity violations ?

8795
You could try using inSSIDer3 and its Link Score to find the best channel http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html

Netalyzr could also give you some insight as to your WiFi performance, but as Shane has said, some wireless adapters and routers don't mix very well which is why you probably get normal speeds at the library but not at home.

Netalyzr requires Java http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/

You could also contact Lenovo Support https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/selectproduct or your router support to see if there are any known issues between the wireless adapter and the make & model of your router.

What security programs do you have installed ?

8797
Did the netsh command show up any other local users with strong signal strengths on the same or adjacent channels to you ?

Normally when speed is pulled down it's because of background programs/tasks, but as you have full speed when wired, that may not be it but wireless overheads can.

Resource Monitor may show what is taking up the bandwidth.

TCP Connections will show any Packet loss and the Latency for each connection.

Run the appropriate MS Fixit to reset the Hosts File to see if that makes any difference. http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/972034

What did ADW and JRT find as they are usually adept at removing browser hijackers.

8799
Distance from the router will affect signal strength and signal strength to speed is relevant http://science.opposingviews.com/wifi-signal-strength-affect-speed-24087.html

Go back into Device Manager/Network adapters, right click on the wireless one and select Properties.

Under the Details tab use the dropdown and click on Ids which will display the VEN & DEV Nos.

My Realtek is VEN_10EC&DEV_8176 as in  http://sciencespaces.com/search/PCI%5CVEN_10EC--ds--DEV_8176/

Put your VEN & DEV Nos into the top search box as I've typed mine to see if it has any later drivers for your OS than what you have installed.

You can check the date of your driver under the Driver tab.

As this is a 3rd party site, create a restore point before installing.

Did the same thing occur when you performed the clean boot or does it occur when you boot up into Safe Mode with Networking ?

If it doesn't in the latter and you have the free version of CCleaner https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download click on Tools - Startup - Scheduled Tasks and check for anything unusual.

You can use the Snipping Tool to post a pic.

Process Explorer is something else that will show what is running but you would need to able to use your computer to run it.

Are you able to use it after the couple of minutes after boot or do you have to wait until whatever is running stops ?

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Process Explorer incorporates VirusTotal but to ensure it is active, click on Options, hover over VirusTotal.com and check its box.

Also ensure the box is checked for Verify Signatures.

Under the VirusTotal column most items will be in blue with a low value/50 something and any suspect items will be in red.

The higher the red numerator, the more suspect that item will be, but you can see what is using up resources and can stop/delete it.

You'll also be able to see similar in Resource Monitor by pressing the Windows key, type resmon and press enter then check the relevant sections.
