You could work your way through http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-issues-windows-8.html but if you used Tweaking to create the back ups before running it, then run the program again to use the restore function.

Will this article help - there's also some helpful looking FAQs lower down the page. http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=faq-Windows-8&faq=85

As you've upgraded from 8 to 8.1, not sure if a Refresh would revert you to 8 - but that may not be a bad thing as you could then try the upgrade again.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/update-from-windows-8-tutorial

I believe a Reset will revert you to Win 8.0 but you would need to back up your personal stuff first and any programs will need reinstalling.

Do all devices work as they should after the upgrade as there have been cases where the odd item in Win 8 wasn't supported for 8.1 driver wise - I think MS's 8.1 upgrade caught some vendors on the hop.

I think you're looking at a new HDD but I'll leave the final analysis to Shane, but not sure when he'll get back with it being the holiday season.

I wouldn't have expected a sfc /scannow to still be reporting problems after a chkdsk /r when it has said it has replaced bad clusters.

Can you post the results of the chkdsk /r

You'll find them in Event Viewer - When it has finished reading the logs, click on Windows Logs/Applications and when Applications has loaded, right click on Applications - click on Find and type chkdsk or wininit - press enter then close the Find box.

Click on Copy in the lower right pane then on Copy details as text and then you can right click in the Reply box and select Paste.

On some programs you can right click on them - select Properties and under the Compatibility tab check the box to Run this program as an administer.

Probably best to open an elevated command prompt and run a chkdsk /r to see what that reports.

I've just checked my Services and Non-Plug and Play Drivers and I don't have a listing for that SamSc - which service does that relate to ?

Edit

Just Googled it and it relates to Hosted Public Cloud WiFi Service

Any other time I would suspect an infection but as this has followed running WR, then something else is amiss.

Did you work your way through that article and have you run sfc /scannow ?

Which other service in that list wouldn't start besides Computer Browser ?

General Computer Support / Re: network access denied

Do you have AdGuard installed ?

That Non-Plug and Play item is for AdGuard TDI Network Driver and wondering if WR had corrupted it.

With some Non-Plug and Play items you can right click on them - select Uninstall then either click on Action/Scan for hardware changes or just reboot for it to reinstate, but I'm not familiar with that network driver.

You could create a restore point and give that a try, but in Googling for some info on it, it has been known to conflict with Online Armour.

Found this download site if that is the item and it needs reinstalling http://adguard.com/en/versions.html or you could just disable it to see if that has any effect.

Does the Computer Browser service start now ?

These are the services that should be set as Started and Auto or Manual as a requirement for Win 7 Internet connectivity -

COM+ Event System
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Wired Autoconfig is set to manual.
WLAN AutoConfig
Workstation

Some of their dependences can be found in Non-Plug and Play Drivers when not listed in Services but from your last post, they appear to be okay.

Edit
Have you run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt to see what that reports ?

Just as an afterthought - When you open Network and Sharing Center is the Wireless still showing as a Home Group ?

Just came across this article http://www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/windows-7-homegroup-not-working-try-these-quick-fixes-912305

Try stopping the Bonjour service as that can sometimes cause havoc with Networking.

Can you go into Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices/Non-Plug and Play Drivers and check for any yellow alerts - also let us know if you have any Unknown Devices listed - this is normally caused when something else has a driver problem.

The suggestion to run chkdsk without any parameters was to see if it finds any problems and what it recommends, but perhaps there'll be something in Event Viewer.

Hi, Boggins, Could not rename fix the problem, as he reports that he could not delete only one file

As the chkdsk /r is failing to run on the reboot, something else seems to be going on here and resolving that could resolve the iTunes install and file deletion problem.

It was the iTunes install failure that brought up the problem with the file deletion which could be a permissions issue, or corruption in the registry which the MS Fix it may be able to resolve - but I would go for resolving the chkdsk problem first.

Sometimes when a file cannot be uninstalled, renaming it can resolve just as attempting its uninstall/delete in Safe Mode can.

MS has a Fix it for unable to install/uninstall so see if you can reinstall iTunes after running it http://support.microsoft.com/mats/program_install_and_uninstall

Your AV can also sometimes prevent installation so try the download/install in Safe Mode with Networking if still having problems, but I think you need to address the chkdsk problem first.

What do you get when you run chkdsk without any parameters which doesn't require a reboot ?

Have you run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt to see what that reports ?

Have you checked Event Viewer for errors with a time stamp for the time of the failure ?

MS has a Hotfix you could run to see if that resolves the chkdsk problem http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975778

I've always used Windows own defragger as of the couple or so of others that I've tried, Windows is the only one that has achieved 0% Fragmentation.

Think I've found the solution to the icon problem in the Troubleshooting section of the FAQs for Nexus http://www.winstep.net/ultimatefaq.asp#i6

Apparently it's because of a bug in Stardock's IconPackager and to resolve it requires deleting a registry key, although the article doesn't give an alternative if this key doesn't exist - perhaps you may have to work your way through the rest of the registry to remove anything Winstep/Nexus related.

Go Start - type regedit - press enter and accept the UAC and from the FAQs navigate -

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile and look to see if sub key IconHandler exists - right click on it and select Delete.

Close the registry sections - File/Exit and reboot but create a restore point first before making any changes.

I'm not sure if the other bits that AdwCleaner found were part of Winstep but I had a program called Free Fixer which was a similar program to AdwCleaner, where you could select which to uninstall and it snagged that as a PuP and removed it, so ADW snagging those could be false positives - but as you are so short of space, why are you installing additional programs ?

Don't forget to run Disk Cleanup as an admin.

It's a pity about the restore points as they could have pulled you out of the mire and it would be prudent to create one prior to installing anything new.

I create regular system images onto an external HDD which have pulled me out of the mire on more than one occasion.

Have you considered a repair install ?

Can't remember what OS you are running but executing Disk Cleanup as an admin may free up some GBs, but you should have a look at what you have installed and see if you can offload anything - it's either that or get yourself a larger HDD or start saving some of your personal stuff to an external HDD.

I think the OS HDD requires a min of 15% free space to run a defrag.

I suppose you will have already tried your restore points ?

Had you downloaded/installed anything immediately before they vanished ?

Give the free ESET Online Scanner a run http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

Click on Advanced and check all of the boxes except the proxy one and disable your AV immediately before you hit the Scan button.

There's also a box to check for its auto uninstall when done.

In that icon cache rebuild article there was a further step to try should the batch file not do it - did you also try that ?

As a long shot, do the desktop icons return when you boot up into Safe Mode with Networking ?

I take it none of my suggestions were any good.

Shane takes most of the weekend off for family time as he also has a computer repair business as well as servicing the forum, but he will get back to you - either later today or Monday depending upon his workload.

I uninstalled SP2, the KB2884256 update and the Dexcom driver failures still occurred. I got vlite (the program to create an updated installation disc)  to run,  but when trying to slipstream SP2 it stops working. Since removing SP2 did not help, I am not sure using an updated installation disc for repairs would help.  I received a number of new updates. They all installed except for the problematic KB2884256.

The idea was to avoid the problems with slipstreaming SP2 by creating a bootable SP1 disk from the previously linked article.

Create an external system image - uninstall SP2 then do the repair install using the Sp1 ISO and then reinstall SP2.

I don't know what would have caused the box to become unchecked - perhaps Event Viewer may have something, but run the icon cache rebuild batch file as an added measure and hopefully it won't happen again.

Reliability history may also have something ?

The fact that NPE was unable to remove that entry could have been a false positive, but I was unable to find a similar HK_USER key in my Win 7 x64 registry.
