General Computer Support / Re: Keyboard keys not recognized by OS
« on: December 13, 2014, 05:58:43 am »
As it's an USB keyboard and even though drivers have been updated, it could be the BUS Controller (can't quite remember what they call that but I know what I mean ) as the OP has uninstalled the Host Controllers etc. and Windows has reinstated those without resolving.

The South Bridge of the Chipset drivers looks after those and downloading those could resolve.

On occasions when I've run NPE, it has snagged a key and because I trust NPE I've let it do its thing, but you could create a restore point and then let it do it's thing.

Have you got a black screen or is it just that all of your icons are missing as I was wondering why you had followed the steps for a black screen in the link you had posted.

If it's a black screen, see what you get when you boot up into Safe Mode with Networking and if it's missing icons, right click on the desktop - hover over View and ensure the box is checked for Show desktop icons.

Should your icon cache need rebuilding you can run this Batch file or follow the manual steps - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html

Go to your computer or motherboard support site and download the Chipset drivers - if you are using AMD architecture then you will need  the video drivers.

However, when I've run the AMD auto detect and got the latest Win 7 drivers for mine, it has put a red hue on my screen so had to roll those back.

Is it the WAN Miniport adapter you are trying to uninstall or a VPN connection ?

As the WAN Miniport is part of Windows you wouldn't normally be able to uninstall it from Device Manager without it reinstating, but sometimes it isn't reinstated after the reboot.

The drivers could be corrupted and would produce a yellow alert next to them in Device Manager - this could be the cause of the BSOD ? - but you can use the repair tool in https://www.vpnhosting.cz/index.php/clanky/wan-miniport-repair-tool-solve-vpn-and-dial-up-error-code-720-and-similar-ppperrors.html to repair.

If there's a VPN set up then try removing that first http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/47188-virtual-private-network-connection-delete-windows-8-1-a.html

From my links he should already have created the Win 7 bootable disk.

Win 7 only goes up to SP1 - were you thinking of the other thread dealing with Vista

9231
If you have created the Vista SP1 ISO version boot disk then read through the following article for how to uninstall SP2 so that you will be able to use the SP1 disk to repair your system, but create an external system image first - either to DVDs or an external HDD before uninstalling SP2.

If you haven't created the disk which includes SP1 then go back to my reply #33 for that link and the relevant SP1 ISOs are lower down the page and this should avoid the problems in streaming SP2..

You can reinstall SP2 after the repair is complete.

Before trying to create the ISO boot disk, is replacing the INFCACHE.1 file as described at http://www.instant-registry-fixes.org/resolve-windows-vista-usb-detection-issues/  worth a try.
Is this fix relevant?

I don't know if it's relevant to Virtual USBs but you could always give it a try - but create a restore point first before making any changes.

9233
I updated the Intel DG31PR chipset driver from version 8.4.0.1016 to the latest version 9.1.2.1008 on 10/12/14 to try to fix this problem. It did not help.

It was just a thought that may have saved you from the repair install.

That link for the Recovery disk would only get you a disk that would boot you into the F8 options.

From a Google you would need to create a Vista ISO boot disk and then Slipstream SP2 into it and this is what I've found for those -

http://www.mydigitallife.info/64-bit-x64-windows-vista-official-direct-download-links/

This is one from clicking on a sub link in that article which includes how to make a bootable disk from those files. http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-vista-free-direct-download-link/

This article may also help if you want to go for the Vista SP1 ISO http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/57-windows-vista-direct-download-links

http://www.ehow.com/how_6100639_slipstream-vista-sp2.html

Hope these help but if you have any problems I'm sure Shane will be able to guide you.

Don't forget that you will need your generic product key as the sticker key doesn't always work and which Belarc Advisor will display for you. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

9234
The files must have really been screwed up but glad you got it sorted.

9235
I wonder if going to the computer support site if OEM build or the motherboard support site if custom build and downloading the Intel Chipset drivers before the repair install would help ?

9236
Because the CBS Log is very large, copy & paste or type the Code in Option 3 of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html and that will just list the files it has scanned without it including all of its operations and make for easier reading.

When a sfc /scannow reports it is unable to repair some files in Win 7 you are usually looking at a reinstall, repair install or factory reset, but with a bootable USB or DVD Win 7 ISO you can perform an offboot sfc /scannow.

If you don't have a Win 7 x32bit SP1 disk you can download the ISO for your version from http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/page-2#post-124821 and use http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool to create a bootable USB/DVD.

You can change the boot order by tapping F12 (usually) as you switch on - use the cursor keys to highlight the media - insert the media and press enter.

Navigate to the Recovery Environment by selecting Repair your Computer - select Command Prompt and enter bcdedit |find "osdevice"

That is a Pipe symbol before find, then using whichever partition letter it gives, enter (assuming C) -

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows and let us know what it reports.

9237
On some forums next to the Quote or Reply with Quote option, there's either a Quote box with a squiggly line next to it or an option to click on "+ which is for reply with multiple quotes.

This allows you to quote more than one user's post in a single reply - just thought you may have come across that.

9238
To "repair" bad sectors you need to run chkdsk /r as the /f switch is just a file checker, but in the report it would show how many KBs in bad sectors.

chkdsk /r can't repair bad sectors, it only moves what data it can from them and "ropes them off" so no other data can be written to them, but data can be lost during this operation.

MBAM released an updated version on 2nd Dec. which may resolve the conflict with McAfee. https://www.malwarebytes.org/downloads/

Try the free version first and if all is well then use the uninstaller you got from their website to remove the free version and download the Premium version which you can reactivate with your product key.

I think it would be best to leave the scheduling off if it's taking up as much memory as it has been doing.

I think it was last year that I had to stop using the free version of MBAM because of a conflict with Norton 360 following a MBAM upgrade.

That caused my laptop to freeze with the error that the MMC had stopped which MBAM subsequently fixed, but the problem could equally be because of McAfee Definition updates which in themselves have caused problems - I think it was a couple of years ago that one of them was responsible for blocking Internet connectivity and McAfee had to address - a bit like Microsoft have had to do on more than one occasion because of their updates.

MBAM is a good program to have installed and if you can get it back on without any conflict, I would give it a try.

9240
Thanks John, I understand how you would edit a quote - the problem I have is in another forum I post on where they have a separate multiple quote button in addition to the regular one - have you ever come across those ?

As I don't want to spam your thread with a different topic, I'll leave it at that.

9241
Have you tried Shane's suggestion of running Disk Cleanup as an admin yet ?

9242
I'm an even cheaperskate than that - just use Windows but these are full system images where I include the recovery D: partition as well each time.

As well as having system images for both my laptops on the external HDD, thought it would be prudent to make them for those belonging to two other people who's laptops I've had to work on.

They don't download/install anything - mainly FB users, but one has a habit of picking up adware now and again and while this is easily gotten rid of - it could end up being something more malicious.

AV programs and WUs would need updating of course but....

9243
Now that everything is running fine I would delete the restore points and manually create a new one - the older ones will have the malware in them that you have previously cleaned out and this is a standard practice after disinfection.

I also create regular system images onto an external HDD that I can restore from should something nasty happen and this is the best counter to any infection by Ransomware - saves you having to shell out Bitcoins to have your files decrypted.

One disadvantage about using an external HDD for these images though, is that the new one overwrites the existing one so you need to be sure that all is okay before creating the new one.

I normally run either a chkdsk or sfc /scannow, CCleaner for clearing the cache then a defrag (don't have a SSD fitted) before creating the image.

The free version CCleaner is a handy tool to have installed. https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

While it has one of the more intelligent Registry cleaners, leave that and the Removing Duplicate File options alone - although you could use the option to find them if need be.

https://www.piriform.com/docs/ccleaner/using-ccleaner

http://www.howtogeek.com/113382/how-to-use-ccleaner-like-a-pro-9-tips-tricks/

There's one thing that you could help me with and that is using multiple quotes in a reply - never have managed to get the hang of that

9244
Just remembered from another forum that MBAM Exploit was updated on 1st December, if you haven't already updated your version.

New features and improvements etc. https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/132660-malwarebytes-anti-exploit-history-updates/#entry914489

Download link http://www.malwarebytes.org/antiexploit/

I'm not sure if the ESET Scanner will update its definitions if/when you come to use it next, but as it's easily downloaded and it brings itself up to date then, I usually check its box for the auto uninstall when complete.

General Computer Support / Re: startup issues
« on: December 03, 2014, 12:56:20 am »
Are you posting from the affected computer as I was wondering if your Internet connection is affected.

If you do have an Internet connection then I would advise booting up into Safe Mode with Networking and running a scan with ESET Free Online Scanner. http://www.eset.co.uk/Antivirus-Utilities/Online-Scanner

Click on Advanced and check all boxes except the Proxy one then disable your AV program immediately before hitting the Scan button.

Your AV program should be isolated in Safe Mode with Networking but aspects can still be loaded.

If you aren't able to download any programs then go Start - type mrt.exe - press enter and opt for the full scan.

Following that if you are still unable to download, see if you can open a command prompt as an administrator and enter sfc /scannow to see what that reports.

If WR doesn't do it then this Batch file may help http://batcmd.com/windows/7/services/dcomlaunch/

Getting the DCOM started to enable RPC will probably resolve the other errors, but check Event Viewer to see if MS has any solutions by clicking on the blue Online help link.

9246
It sounds like you are good to go but I'll leave the final word for Shane, as he'll probably review your thread as he likes to be aware of any after effects of running WR.

Tom.

9247
The original sfc /scannow reported it was unable to repair all files because of a corrupt Components Store.

The /RestoreHealth command repairs the Component Store so the next sfc returns nothing wrong - job done.

Are you still getting any "side effects" from running WR ?

Just as a recap, what are the security programs you have installed ?

9248
I'm anti EU as I believe they've interfered too much in the running of the UK - but I don't want to get into politics.

Which McAfee program is snagging possible infections ?

9249
Being in the UK I'm 8hrs ahead of the forum's time stamp so it will be another 9hrs or so before I hit the sack - usually

Tom.

9250
You'll need to wait for Shane to get back to you on any side effects after running WR as it seems to run okay on some systems but produces side effects on others.

If you have any Network problems after a reboot or otherwise, open the admin command prompt and enter -

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
exit

Then reboot, but let us know if any of the commands fail - the release and renew commands will report that neither can be done for the Ethernet if you aren't wired to the router.

Edit - I find it's better to save a snip with a .jpg extender as they expand better when posted in a forum.
