Stop HJT from running at start and do a scan with the free version of MBAM to see if that finds anything.

Uncheck the box to decline the offer to run a trial of the Premium version if offered. https://www.malwarebytes.org/downloads/

Norton has its own generic names for when it finds something with similar heuristics to other infections, so a Google helps but it can also be a false positive.

The DISM /CheckHealth and /ScanHealth commands don't repair anything and are basically read-only.

Run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth followed by another sfc /scannow to see if that still reports it is unable to repair some files.

If it still reports that it is unable to repair some files, then you're probably looking at the Refresh recovery option. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc

This will remove any 3rd party programs you have installed so you will need to decide which of those security programs you want to reinstall.

Hi, Boggins Tips for vista work for my win 7. Is there any different pattern in win 8

Win 8/8.1 are different beasts altogether.

The Refresh option almost does the equivalent of a Win 7 Repair install and will only ask for Recovery/install media if it finds missing files - so it's done that way.

Thanks jr, it works for me now but still hung a bit.

Going back to HD's opening post, he said that the card works for less than 2 mins so it isn't as the problem in that MS article.

From the dxdiag report, Windows doesn't like the driver's unverified signature and is causing the card to crash.

9254
John is using Win 8.1 - see opening post.

9255
Sorry for the typo.

Did you run the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth command to see what that reported - while I don't have Win 8.1 to see exactly how that cmd reports, I assume it would be similar to running chkdsk in Win 7 etc. without any parameters and when it finds something amiss, it would recommend either the /f or the /r switch.

Depending upon what /CheckHealth reports, using the /RestoreHealth switch can fix the Component Store and then redo the sfc /scannow cmd to see if it still reports corruption.

While I don't know what jraju's MS link provides, Windows doesn't like unverified signatures which is why it's blocking the install, but if you also have residue of Audigy 4 then the 5/RX SB1550 driver also wouldn't sit well.

In your DXDIAG report it gave a Device ID PCI\VEN 1102 & 0008 DEV number.

The VEN is the Vendor ID and DEV is the Device ID.

You then enter those numbers into http://www.pcidatabase.com/ and press enter which will give you a number of possibilities and you line up what is given for the Device ID No. which got me that long list - they aren't normally as long as that one though.

I think you would be as well to uninstall all SoundBlaster bits to start again should any residue from the previous Audigy 4 install be causing any problems.

It is a bit more involved than just using Windows Uninstaller http://support.creative.com/kb/showarticle.aspx?sid=85237

@ jraju - Did you test that MS link as it's just hanging for me, although I've found that with a number of MS Support links recently and on one occasion when I finally managed to get to one, it had a warning that they were having problems with their Servers.

Can you open the admin cmd prompt again and either enter or copy & paste -

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log\ >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" and that will output to your desktop just the files it has scanned as the CBS log is quite large when it details all of its operations.

While this tutorial for sfc /scannow is given for Win 7, it pre-dates Win 8 but is still good to use. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

You can also use these DISM commands in Win 8.1 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/hh824869.aspx and use the Refresh option method of recovery should the sfc /scannow or CheckHealth cmds find anything that requires attention.

The Refresh option in Win 8.1 is pretty much like a Repair Install in Win 7 where it just repairs the OS without wiping everything else out.

You could use Win 8.1's Windows Defender supplemented with Avast Free as the latter doesn't have its own firewall and will run with any other active AV program because of that - but if you decide to go that route, check that WD is turned on.

The 1/50 VirusTotal.coms are nothing to worry about and it probably snagged AdwCleaner because of its intrusive capabilities.

Instead of Browser Guard, try HitmanPro.Alert which I know doesn't cause a conflict - I'm running that with Norton 360 in Win 7 x64 HP.

http://www.surfright.nl/en/cryptoguard

I Googled the McAfee LifeSafe and SafeKey but it's up to you if you want to keep them - don't think they would cause any conflicts but I don't like any Toolbars on my laptop - least of al anything from McAfee.

I think MBAM Anti-Exploit should be okay - I just have the free version of MBAM installed.

To eliminate any possible security program conflicts, it's probably just to go back to basics for the purpose of troubleshooting and then you can decide what you want to add/change later.

Probably best to start again, but run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor.

9259
At least we now know what the conflict is.

Can you confirm the model number http://support.creative.com/kb/ShowArticle.aspx?url=http://ask.creative.com:80/srvs/cgi-bin/webcgi.exe/,/?st=185,e=0000000000142828675,k=7607,sxi=11,varset=ws:,case=83341 as the DEV No 0008 gives that as a Sound Blaster Audigy 4 http://www.pcidatabase.com/vendor_details.php?id=644 but when I've gone to creative.com all I can find for SB1550 is for an Audigy 5/RX http://support.creative.com/kb/ShowArticle.aspx?url=http://ask.creative.com:80/srvs/cgi-bin/webcgi.exe/,/?st=496,e=0000000000142825517,k=7698,sxi=11,varset=ws:,case=10846 (2nd of 2nd group down)

This is the only driver I can find on their site which is for Audigy 5/RX SB1550 http://support.creative.com/Downloads/welcome.aspx and from the release date looks like the same driver that you have installed.

You may have to contact Creative for advice in obtaining a WHQL XP driver or one that is verified and make a note of what that error message says.

Have you installed all of the Windows Updates since the install ?

9261
When the audio next stops go Start, type dxdiag - press enter - select 64 bit if applicable and see what it says under the Sound tab and is Event Viewer reporting anything ?

9262
I see.

I don't have an answer as to why Windows cannot find that file but hopefully Shane will be able to sort when he returns, either later today or Monday.

Did you try creating a restore point and then uninstalling those USB Human Interface Devices to allow Windows to reinstall them ?

9263
Do you still have the problems when you boot up into Safe Mode with Networking http://www.7tutorials.com/5-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-8-windows-81 or in a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

It's quite possible that one or more of the security programs you have installed is causing a conflict to produce the side by side error, although that post dates your problems.

There are quite a number of programs listed in those logs which I'm not familiar with but Process Explorer will show if any are a threat.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Once you have Process Explorer running click on Options and ensure Verify Signature is checked and then hover over VirusTotal.com and check its box.

When it refreshes look for any programs/processes listed with a red highish value/~50.

Let us know if you have any of those as some can be legit.

Given the scanners you have used, it's doubtful there is any infection left on your system but give AdwCleaner a run (although I didn't spot any malicious Toolbars and the like).

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

Click on Scan and when that has completed it may list some items in the lower window that you can uncheck to keep.

Click on Report and it will show you what it has found which it will delete - if there are items in there you also wish to keep alongside what look like undesirables, then close the Report and you can either click on Clean, in which case you would need to reinstall the items you would prefer to keep - or you can click on Uninstall and leave whatever it has found on your computer.

It will produce another report after the reboot if you click on Clean.

I'd also like you to reset the Hosts File should any of what the scanners have removed corrupted that file. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034#LetMeFixItMyselfAlways

Also to check that none of your system files are corrupt, open a Command Prompt as an administrator http://www.howtogeek.com/194041/how-to-open-the-command-prompt-as-administrator-in-windows-8.1/ and enter sfc /scannow and let us know what it reports.

The ipconfig /all from MiniToolBox is showing different Subnet Masks for your Wireless adapter and the Tap-Windows Adapter v9 - is the latter the AP ?

It could have been updated since you last used it ?

This Toshiba laptop started to run at around the 56C mark even though I give it a regular blow out, so I installed it onto here and it seems to keep the Max. down by 2 or 3 degress.

You could always give it a try and dump it if it doesn't improve the temps.

If Event Viewer doesn't give anything, then as the problem has followed an upgrade, I would try the install again if you have run Windows Updates and they are up to date.

9266
I never use the driver update option in Device Manager as Windows very rarely has up to date drivers so I'd try the computer support site for any Nvidia updates.

That's a new error message for me and a Google has suggested a repair install, deleting the restore points, disabling AV program/firewall, or uninstalling the devices in Device Manager and letting Windows reinstall them either through Action/Scan for hardware changes or a reboot - which is the one I would favour after first creating a restore point.

Having Googled Dexcom I appreciate the importance of this program, but if it's working okay, do you really need to update any drivers ?

It's generally advised (that I've seen), that if something is working fine then leave any driver updates until it isn't - but this doesn't resolve the failure of KB2884256 or why Windows is reporting it is unable to find that file.

You could have a look in Event Viewer to see if that has reported what could be causing this, but if this was my computer I would restore it to Vista, either by a full system image I'd created before the upgrade or using the factory reset - run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor - as in your case as I would have already have run it and if that gives the green light, redo the Win 7 Install using the Upgrade option, using the steps as in the tutorial I have already linked.

Use the link in Reply #37 to install SpeedFan and that will auto regulate the fan speed for you.

Glad you were able to resolve it, but I wonder why the freeze was intermittent.

Have you checked the temps to see if it's still running at 60C since you updated the chipset/graphics drivers ?

Download any one of the drivers again and select Save.

Go to where you have it saved, right click on it and select Properties and under the General tab ensure the Attributes boxes are unchecked and if you have an Unblock option, click on that - Apply - OK.

Under the Security tab ensure you have full permissions for all listed users and then extract the .zip to see if it will install.

Prior to upgrading did you run the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor with all external devices plugged in http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=20

How did you upgrade from Vista - Upgrade or clean install  and did you create a system image before upgrading with which to revert and reinstall should problems have arisen, like now. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-vista-to-windows-7#T1=tab01

If your computer is an OEM build then you should go to the computer vendor's support for drivers such as chipset and video etc. and the motherboard support if custom build.

9272
@ sptilton

I'm not familiar with Virtual USBs but the South Bridge of either Chipset or the video drivers looks after the Bus Controller for USBs and downloading the Chipset and/or Nvidia drivers may help.

If neither Dexcom or Windows are able to find the Dexcom driver then perhaps the free version of Slimdrivers may have better luck ?

Look out for the box to uncheck for MyPCBackup during the installation prompts. http://www.driverupdate.net/

Hello Im on windows 7 64 bit , i changed from windows vista then suddenly i couldnt update any driver but i can still use my mouse and keyboard, I tried tweaking.com and installing from manufacturer's website but stll i always get "acess denied" repair but the problem still exist. Help will be really appreaciated. Thanks

You will need to open a new thread of your own as two different solutions may be required.

9274
Have you checked Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices for any yellow alerts, possibly against Non-Plug and Play Drivers ?

Can you uninstall Dexcom, retry Windows Update or reinstall Dexcom to see if its driver update will install then and are you loading the driver for Vista ?

9275
If you haven't already tried Windows Installer 4.5 give it a try. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942288
