Microsoft don't even recommend MSE, but you can run both AVAST Free and MSE as AVAST Free doesn't have its own firewall - which is the cause of a conflict when attempting to run two or more active AV programs.

So neither the graphics drivers or the BIOS update helped ?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Given the trouble shooting steps you've done without success, this would now tend to point to a problem on the motherboard.

9453
I think this could either be a Graphics driver or BIOS problem.

Go to Acer support - I think this is yours but a Google from your location will get you the link if not http://br.acer.com/ac/pt/BR/content/support and download the Graphics drivers.

If that doesn't do it then check to see if the BIOS version is newer than what you have installed, but before re-flashing the BIOS you must have the battery installed as well as being on AC power http://smallbusiness.chron.com/upgrade-bios-acer-laptop-48800.html

Is this happening when you extend the Shut down button to select Restart ?

9455
I'm not sure what you mean by that.

While your English is OK - your posts can be a bit vague.

Perhaps you could be more expressive if you put your reply into Google Translate then copy & paste the translation - this is what I had to do on another forum when someone posted in another language

You didn't say if it was a chkdsk /r you performed ?

Yes

So at least it won't be a failing HDD.

You didn't say if it was a chkdsk /r you performed ?

9458
When you boot up into Safe Mode there is an option for Last Known Good Configuration but from what I understand, this is an intermittent problem ?

You could try changing the boot order (tap F12 as you switch on) to boot up with the install disk - select Repair your Computer and navigate to the Recovery Environment - select Command Prompt then enter bootrec /fixmbr

These are other options of the Bootrec commands you can use http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

There's also the option of Startup Repair and an offboot sfc /scannow from the Command Prompt.

To do the offboot sfc /scannow while in the Recovery Environment, at the Command Prompt type bcdedit |find "osdevice" (that is a Pipe symbol before find)

Using whichever partition letter that gives, enter (assuming C: )

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows

9459
How do you mean "formatted the netbook" - was that a factory reset or did you wipe it and do a clean install of Win 7 either as an upgrade from another version of Windows or as a reinstall of Win 7 ?

And was it a chkdsk /r you did ?

General Computer Support / Re: Windows firewall won't start
« on: September 25, 2014, 06:05:33 am »
A system file check may be able to reinstate the firewall which is done by going Start Orb > type cmd.exe > right click on cmd and select Run as administrator > accept the UAC > type sfc /scannow at the prompt and press enter to see what that reports.

You can also go Start Orb > type services.msc > press enter and check that the Base Filtering Engine, RPC (RPCSS) and Windows Firewall services are showing as Started and Automatic then go into Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices > Non Plug and Play Drivers > scroll down to the bottom to check that Windows Firewall Authorization Driver doesn't have a yellow alert next to it - but right click on it and select Properties.

It will show if it's working properly under the General tab, but check under the Driver tab that it is set to Demand and that the Start box is greyed out which will denote it is started - otherwise click the Start button > OK.

If you have problems with the Authorization Driver then you can restore it with the batch file from  http://batcmd.com/windows/7/services/mpsdrv/ after selecting your version of Win 7 and SP1 from the dropdowns.

You could download Windows Firewall from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/win-services/7/MpsSvc.reg and the BFE from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/win-services/7/BFE.reg if required but run this ESET Services Repair Tool to see if that can get things going again http://kb.eset.com/library/ESET/KB%20Team%20Only/Malware/ServicesRepair.exe

If you download the Firewall and BFE then you will need to go into services.msc to start them.

If the actions of this PUM are recent, boot up into Safe Mode and try your restore points to prior the infection.

Thank you guys, I refreshed my computer.  Finally, it worked, but I have to reorganize my computer, all mess up.

Anyway,  thank you so much for the help.

Glad you were able to sort it.

It seems as if the causes are becoming much more complex that standard or recognized fixes no longer work and the final solution of a reset of some description is becoming the only solution.

I didn't have Internet under my RPC either in Win 7 but thought Win 8.1 may have been different.

From what you have tried, unless Shane has any more ideas - I think the only option would be to Refresh, but you could create a bootable 8.1 ISO from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-8-1-enterprise (read the Pre-Install info) and use Imgburn to create the bootable disk http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn and boot up with that to see if an offboot sfc /scannow would sort things.

In Win 7 when you boot up with an install disk for this, you select Repair your Computer and navigate to the Recovery Environment (WinRE) and select Command Prompt.

At the cmd prompt enter bcdedit |find "osdevice" (that's a Pipe symbol before find) and using whichever partition letter enter (assuming C: )

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\Windows

I think this should be similar for Win 8 etc. but Shane will probably be able to guide you should you need to adapt any steps for Win 8.1

If that still fails then you may find something in this article or the sub link in its first post to address your original problem  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup/drivers-won-t-load-in-windows-8-1/td-p/4488902 but because the registry fix didn't get a reply, that hasn't been confirmed as a fix - but before you make any changes to the registry, click on RPC > File > Export > give it a name and that will back up that folder which you can restore in regedit by File > Import then click on the .reg file then Open.

In services.msc can you check to see if RPC RPCSS is showing as Started and Automatic ?

While I'm not familiar with that error message, did you try sfc /scannow in Safe Mode ?

Can you check if you get the same error message with chkdsk /f or just chkdsk without any parameters - or if you run sfc /scannow in Safe Mode.

A repair install doesn't always work on an OEM machine - it certainly doesn't on my Toshiba.

I've tried this a couple of times and it seems to get almost to the end and at exactly the same spot, it fails and then you have to sit through while it restores the original version.

If you wipe the HDD then you will wipe the Recovery Partition and you will have a computer without an OS.

If you have back ups of what is on the computer then follow the steps in the link in Post #111 to factory reset it.

As far as I knew, the Auto detect should always be checked and the Proxy unchecked but I'll bear in mind what Leo has said.

A Proxy is an intermediary server between the browser and the network address and can be set up by infections to hijack your connection, but you would normally only use a Proxy server if you were connecting through a corporate network which businesses set up, which I think is for added security and they would set their own Proxy address and port to be used.

I think IE auto detects otherwise when a Proxy is in the route to a network address.

I've only ever gone into IE's settings that have corrected an anomaly and hardly ever of those for FF, as I just use that as an alternative browser when I have problems working a website in IE.

9469
In extreme cases I run netsh winsock reset catalog as an admin from the command prompt or reset the Hosts file to default http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034

You could also run the command netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt which is more for actual connectivity issues, but resetting won't harm.

MiniToolBox will show how many entries are in the Hosts file or you can press Win key+r and type notepad c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\Hosts then press enter.

Mine looks like this -

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
#       127.0.0.1       localhost
#       ::1             localhost

Search engines and DNS servers are different and I use my ISP's home page on both FF and IE which is AOL based.

Do you get the same hang in Safe Mode with Networking ?

I use IE and if a search starts to hang, I initially go Tools > Internet options > Content > Clear SSL state but I don't know if this would have any effect on Firefox, but if I remember rightly - this isn't browser specific for you.

Other than what you have already tried and changing the DNS servers either in the router or the computer - nothing else comes to mind and I don't think power cycling the router would help.

9470
It's straight forward to change the DNS servers in the computer, but you could also leave those as auto and change the DNS servers in the router.

You would need to check the router manual or have a hunt around in the router's settings for DNS and a reboot of the router is usual to effect the change - make a note of  the default DNS settings, but normally when you have the option to change from Auto to your preferred, it will revert to those when the router is rebooted after changing back to Auto.

To change them in the computer, Open Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings > right click on the adapter you wish to change > click on Properties > TCP/IPv4 > Properties and check the radio button for Use the following DNS server and enter 8.8.8.8 into the top row then 8.8.4.4 into the lower row.

Check the box for Validate settings upon exit > OK > Close and that will active the Troubleshooter and if that reports it couldn't find anything then you are good to go.

You can also try Open DNS which is for the Primary 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 for the Secondary.

If you open a command prompt and ping each, you will see which has the best Latency for your location.

Hi Yousra and Welcome,

Event Viewer may give you more info on this, but had you downloaded anything prior to this happening as you could have inadvertently picked up malicious bundled unwanted software.

Using your restore points prior to this happening can sometimes resolve, but create a restore point then download/run AdwCleaner from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

Click on Scan and it may list some items in the lower window which you can uncheck any you want to keep as it can snag legit programs.

Having done that if needed, click on Report when the scan has completed and a report will open in Notepad with what it has found.

Close Notepad then click on Clean and follow the prompts where it will produce another report after the reboot with what it has removed.

You can also run MS Security Scanner should it be malware rather than adware http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

If it's still a no go then perform a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

This will isolate all of your Start up programs except your AV program which will have been isolated in Safe Mode with Networking.

You said earlier that the chkdsk /r ran okay in normal mode - what has changed from when you first got the error message that it couldn't run because of previously installed software to being able to run it to a repeat of the error message ?

Just to confirm the HDD is okay, can you copy across that HDDScan 3.3 that I'd linked in Post #106.

It can run S.M.A.R.T. and when you click on the HDD symbol you can select a Surface Test - which takes a lot longer.

If it's just corrupt files that's causing the problem then booting up into Safe Mode > select Repair your Computer and navigate to the Recovery Environment and run either the Startup Repair up to three times if it continues to report it is unable to auto repair or select Command Prompt and enter sfc /scannow which will report what it has found/can do.

If that reports that it was unable to repair some files then an offboot sfc /scannow after booting up with the bootable install disk should fix those if needed and hopefully the connectivity problem.

Then all you need to do with the current HDD, once you have backed up your personal stuff is to factory reset via the RE and there'll be no need to repair install.

I don't know which AV program HP preinstalled as bloat but you can use one of the Uninstallers from http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/ prior to installing your preference before running Windows Updates and leave µTorrent and BitComet off until you have everything else reinstalled and then anything you do afterwards should point to the cause if lack of connectivity reoccurs.

To save from doing another factory reset, before reinstalling µTorrent and BitComet - if you must and after uninstalling the bloat, would be to create a full system image and then you wouldn't need to sit through hours of Windows Updates again.

CHKDSK in read-only also says if there's any bad sectors - did it report any ?

If you were unable to run chkdsk before in normal mode - what has changed and what did chkdsk report ?

Is this an OEM machine as you mention factory restore ?

If you format an OEM machine then you will lose the Recovery Partition.
