I found that the Kaspersky Rescue disk can initiate a chkdsk /f after it has scanned C:

This scan took about 9hrs on this machine and after I clicked on the Shutdown option on completion, went away and came back to find a chkdsk /f running which fixed my problem of a black screen, although the black screen only had a big white cursor arrow on it and not the Error alert message - but it's worth a shot.

I dont think it is a virus, I think you have a drive crashing and is what is causing everything.

When windows shuts down it will hang if it is unable to stop a driver. So the question is, which driver is doing it? Cam driver? Video Driver? Audio? network?

The first thing to do, since we dont know which driver is causing it, is to make sure you have the latest versions of all those drivers, including the chipset drivers. have you done that yet?

I have updated all my drivers since this started happening, I will go over them all again just in case. I am using the "search automatically for updated driver software" on the Device Manager, is this okay? or should I download all the drivers myself and install them manually?

It's always best to do them manually as Windows rarely has the latest drivers, but have you checked Event Viewer or Reliability history to see what they report.

You haven't said which OS you are using but with Win 7 you can run Disk Cleanup as an admin by right clicking on it and selecting Run as administrator as well as going Start - type %temp% - press enter and if there are a substantial number of files in there, then go Organize - Select all - Organize - Delete - confirm then check the box and click in Skip as the system could be getting bogged down with temp files etc.

This could also be a memory problem and unfortunately the Memtest86+ site appears to be down, but you can leave just one RAM module installed and run Windows own memory test then repeat the procedure with each of the remaining sticks - being careful only to handle them by their edges and laying them down on a non conductive surface when removed.

OK, it looks like I now have two identical drives.  Booting from either has the same result.  In the upper left hand corner appears the word Error!

I'm ready to begin the repair.

Cloning isn't going to restore the computer - it's just a fall back to retain the status quo should something go wrong during the clean install.

I had intended to offer my condolences on the death of your friend but was focusing on the problem at hand - but can you check with your friend's widow to see if your friend had created any system images as if/when the clean install is successful, you will be able to restore with that and as you have two HDDs, the original will always have the original personal files on.

I think you should still see if you can reincarnate the original HDD with either the Kaspersky or Hirens Boot disks prior to trying the clean install given the problems you've had so far.

Are you able to be selective in what you can restore from that cloning program or is it like Windows system image where it is all or nothing ?

You may not need Teredo  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/network/cc917486.aspx as the 6to4 adapter can perform similar functions, but as it's a default adapter and is showing with a fault, then reinstalling it should it ever be needed could be prudent.

Is Bittorrent better than uTorrent?  :undecided:

BitTorrent and µTorrent are owned by the same company, but it's the way P2P programs can be exploited so you need to be careful in how you choose which to download http://www.wikihow.com/Safely-Download-Torrents

I used to post on one forum where if you showed you were using P2P, because of their strict anti Piracy policy, they would refuse to help and close your thread.

Boot up into Safe Mode with Networking and download the free version of MBAM and run that while in Safe Mode with Networking.

Uncheck the box if it asks if you want to run the Pro trial version.

What happens when you right click on ASP.NET - Properties - and change the Start up to Manual ?

See if this ESET program will reinstate your services http://kb.eset.com/library/ESET/KB%20Team%20Only/Malware/ServicesRepair.exe

Also can you open a Command Prompt as an admin and enter sfc /scannow

Should you need this go Start - type cmd.exe - right click on cmd and select Run as administrator - accept the UAC - type sfc /scannow then press enter and let us know what it reports.

Have you also checked Event Viewer or Reliability history to see if they have anything on these ?

Once you've cloned the HDD, perhaps one of those rescue disks could get you back in.

For me, I'd prefer an OEM machine to come back the way it was and then if there were any other problems, HP Diagnostics (in this instance) or the factory reset would return it to pristine, providing the HDD is still serviceable.

Shane may have a fix for that but if you can boot up into Recovery on the original HDD, then perhaps a repair install may be an easier option given that you have a XP CD ? http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm

You could also see if a Kaspersky Rescue disk would repair things for you on that HDD http://support.kaspersky.co.uk/4162

There's also Hiren's Boot CD which has a Mini Windows XP to repair/recover a dead OS (so it says) http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

I fumbled my way through a Kaspersky disk recently but have never used Hiren's but with your current problems, it's probably time to look for another solution to using the OEM disks on the new HDD.

Shane may be able to give you some advice on using those disks.

If you still have problems after going through that lot, then I would suspect that your computer could still be infected and you could do worse than run ESET Online Free Scanner  http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

After it has loaded, click on Advanced and check all of the boxes except the bottom one (think it's for a Proxy) then disable your AV immediately prior to clicking on Scan and wait for it to do its thing as it can take a while.

Hopefully it will find something and if it does, re-run the ESET Repair Tool if WMP is still buggy.

What did you do to disinfect the computer other than remove programs/files - did you use any anti malware scanners and which AV program are you using ?

If WMP still doesn't work, then perhaps Shane will have some other suggestions as I've given you all that I have in my arsenal to fix WMP.

You can also reinstall WMP by unchecking it's box in Programs & Features/Turn Windows features on or off/Media Features - reboot then go back into Features and recheck its box.

Just for info - Memtest86+ or any memory test should be done on just one stick at a time, but if you have alternated when removing one stick and nothing has changed, then the sticks should be good.

The Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface doesn't reinstate on the reboot as other devices do in Device Manager.

I had to fix this a while ago for someone else and before I advised uninstalling, I tried it myself after first creating a restore point and it didn't for me.

Went on a Google run and came across http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/how-to-install-teredo-tunneling-pseudo-interface/754c8f29-3a87-4e77-babd-a69c8910e17e but it may have Dependencies in Non-Plug and Play Drivers which you need to click on View/Show hidden devices in Device Manager to view.

I uninstalled it again and followed those steps and it came back in Device Manager.

If there's anything wrong in Non-Plug and Play Drivers, it will have a yellow alert against it and expanding, scroll down if needed until you come across the item with the alert.

For the most part I think they will reinstate on the reboot or Action/Scan for hardware changes after uninstalling - but always create a restore point first before making any changes - if in doubt, do nothing and post if you find any of them with a yellow alert against them.

Sometimes printing problems can arise because the Print Spooler has stopped for some reason in Services and this should be set to Started and Automatic and it's only Dependency is RPC and if that is stopped, then you would also have a myriad of other problems as well.

What's that other device with the yellow alert in Devices and Printers ?

Edit - Forgot to add that using your Restore Points back to when it was working could also help, especially if this has just occurred following a download of anything else.

The tutorial for the clean boot walks you through and how to revert to a normal boot, but it's the only method I know of that can isolate programs (except an AV program) to determine if any are in conflict.

The only way to isolate the AV program as the cause would be to either disable it, change it for something else or boot up into Safe Mode with Networking, but Windows Updates don't work in Safe Mode with Networking.

A tech would probably use the same method to eliminate any possible software conflicts, so why pay someone to do what you can do yourself.

Read carefully through or even print out the tutorial so you are familiar with all of the steps and then proceed with confidence.

I was nervous the first time I factory reset my laptop but trusted Windows to know what it was doing, just as MS gives the steps for performing a clean boot.

Also came across where someone was able to install the apps when connected WiFi to the router but not when using wired - no explanation for that other than perhaps a buggy LAN adapter ?

Have you checked Event Viewer for a date and time stamp which relates to the error/failure ?

That sounds like bundled unwanted software that came with another download, so there maybe something else listed with the same date stamp - but glad you were able to find the culprit and thanks for the update.

If you tap F8 as you switch on, you should be able to select Disable auto restart on failure and that will give you a BSOD error code which could be 8C000002 (from a Google), but post what you get.

Express Gate is a feature of ASUS mobos to facilitate quick booting, so after booting up with F8 you may also be able to select Safe Mode with Networking and download it from ASUS (there's also a patch for it in Utilities), but from http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/245654-express-gate-installation-incomplete-asus-motherboard.html you should be able to disable it in the BIOS.

I'm not sure from your post about the origin of that Win 7 Enterprise HDD because if that was a single licence registered to another motherboard, then it's not likely to work anyway without reactivation from MS if you can convince them a mobo change was essential.

If it still fails in a clean boot then that will point to your AV or aspects of it such as AVG Secure Search Toolbar if using AVG or you may have picked up a malicious one - so did this occur shortly after downloading anything - in which case your restore points should be able to come to your rescue and have you tried running IE without add-ons ?

I tried the Repair/Upgrade option a couple of times on here just for the hell of it and for the experience and it took ages and to boot, it failed each time at the same spot and then I had to sit and wait while it restored from Windows.old - never did find why that was unless it's because this is an OEM build ?

Did an offboot sfc.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

next step is the repair install... will wait for more free time for that one.

Strange.... - but hope you have better luck with the Repair install.

Don't forget to back up your Drivers folders in System32 as the ISO doesn't include any and then you will be able to drop them back in after.
