Feedback & Suggestions / Rescue or Recovery Disk
« on: November 20, 2015, 10:02:15 am »
Recently, I've had a spate of PC problems including start up, stalling at Windows Log On, stalling at Shut Down, resumption of Normal Start Up....stuck in Safe Mode.

Of course, there is a myriad of Rescue/Recovery Disks out there.  But one constructed by Shane would be a world beater.

TIA,

Geometer

Thank you!

Thanks Julian and Boggin.  I will continue to take an instant snapshot using RollBack Rx Home (free) in lieu of running Acronis et al. prior to installing a new program etc.

General Computer Support / Frequency of Running Windows Repair All-IN-ONE

Absent a known problem, should Windows Repair be run on a maintenance schedule, and, if so, how frequent?

Solved, sort of.  Finally, bit the bullet and did a clean install.  Many thanks for all the help.

Hello Boggin,

AAARGH!  Somehow, I now cannot see my USB bootable drive.  All I get is "automatic repair...diagnosing PC" back to "autmatic repair" endless looping.

This means that I can't even operate the Win 8.1 installation files thereon for a clean installation!

I took a look at the Paragon Rescue Disk, and learned that it was bootable.  Another instance of my putting the horse before the cart.  Too late I am afraid!

Incidentally, did you ever post the disks for Win 7 Pro as you generously offered to do?

I thought, finally, a solution at hand thanks to Boggin, a hero, and Shane, the Master of Tweeting.com.

But, alas, when i proceeded to the Coomand Prompt, it was inoperable as it requires "Andminstor's Rights."

What say you?

TIA

No.  Also, no Boot Priority device list.

Shane,

Eureka! Your suggestion to set a password did the trick!

I was able to change the drive mode from EUFI to Legacy (Standard)

However, when I re-booted I received the following:

1.  Drive is in Legacy (Standard) mode.
2.  Attempt to boot results in screen showing this:  "Realtech PCIe Family Controller, Series v.125 (04/09/11
PXE - E61: Media Test Failure, CHECK CABLE

PXE - M0F:  Exiting PXE ROM, No Boot Device Found
                                                                                                       PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT"

Using a neat little program, RUFUS, I am able to create a bootable USB flash drive.  Google provided me with the only repair  program, "BootRepairDisk" which came as an ISO.  Unfortunately, it did not fix
the problem

Can you recommend an ISO based repair program?

If not, any further suggestions?

TIA

Shane,

Unable to turn off secure boot.  Unable to change mode to Legacy (Standard).  Is a full format installation my only option?

General Computer Support / Re: Problem with Windows Services

Try this:
- Run Windows Repair with (only) the box "Reset Service Permissions" ticked.
- Then try to change the start up state again.

This worked!   Many thanks!

ran scannow....no problems.

Applying list of possible solutions via http://pcerrorpedia.com/how-to-resolve-windows-7-not-responding-message.  Disabled Desktop Windows Mgr. and zeroed Indexing Locations.  So far so good!  Will report back after further testing.

Many thanks for your help!

Does the task manager show them using a lot of cpu?

Does the event viewer show any information or errors about them?

Is it a lot or all programs or only certain ones?

Shane

Follow Up:

CPU not showing a lot of usage.

Event Viewer:  I do not know what I am looking for or how to operate!

Ran HD tests using Seagate Tool & Gsmart.  Basic tests Passe
