General Computer Support / Re: Update to Windows 10 nightmare
« on: January 02, 2016, 05:37:21 pm »
As I was tuning the PC off Windows installed some more updates which may or may not altered things because when the machine had rebooted plugging things into USB had changed.   All of the grayed out items in 'device manager' now had the black lock icon.

A friend came over & he had some USB drives or sticks as well so we systematically went through them all to see what happened as we looked at the 'This PC' page.  Everything plugged in triggered the audio.  But what happened with the portable drives like the WD passports was different from what happened with the USB sticks.

All the external HDD's,except for the problem one mentioned above opened up with both correct drive letter & name.  For example my red drive came up as I had set it as 'R=Red drive'.

As for the sticks we had about 5 come up as 'E' drive yet the names were all over the place.  You might get 'E' drive labelled with the sticks brand name or 32GB USB3.

Most of these drives asked the question as to what to do when plugged in & we always said 'let me view files', but if I unplugged drive & reinserted it I got asked the same question because I think Windows had dementia.  Maybe I should just delete all of the external drives from device manager and start again.

I have seen the suggestion that perhaps I should let Windows assign drive letters & the link to a 4 year old site on how to check & remove drive letters already assigned.  I think that some of this procedure may have altered since the instructions.

I have however gone to device manager & found that under SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device followed by 2 mentions failed request.  Under that again are 13 entries for 'USB Mass Storage Device'.  To the left of the screen is a column which appears to be an icon for a lock & all of these appear as be grayed out..  Is this problem?  Should I just delete these grayed out items & see if Windows can actually fix something?

I have tried to attach a snip of the file but its not being attached.

I between holiday commitments I have been trying what was suggested using the Windows 10 reset option.  This option is said to save all of my files while winding back all of by drivers & any changes since the original update was applied.  You have to reinstall of your software with this option.

Things are a little better but nowhere near I think they should be.  If I discount the possibility that my hardware is faulty then my prime suspect with the USB area  I can insert a stick & I might get asked what would I like to happen when say "E" gets plugged in & I say ask me every time.  I plug a second one in & I get asked again what I want to do with say "R" & I give it the same answer.  Now the strange thing is If I plug in "E" again, I get asked the same question  even though it should open automatically.  It hasn't saved my choice.

If I plug say a passport drive it sometimes says that the drive has errors & this I should let it scan & fix the errors.  But when the scan is finished it reports that there are no errors.

I think that perhaps Windows is getting really confused with the drive letters that I have assigned.  I'll keep trying.

I still haven't been able to get the check disk function to work from the CMD line. I have also tried running PC with both the "Shell Hardware detection turned both on & off & this made no difference.

I have tried many various USB devices into PC & while they all get Windows to a make sound none triggers autoplay.

If anything tings seem to be getting stranger.  If I plug in a USB stick that has a file that I would like to see I get momentary flicker of black & orange before it displays.

As I said at the start this is a new clear reinstall done in a PC shop which has a good reputation but I'm starting to wonder if they did something wrong.   I have been reinstalling several programs that I own & maybe these can give clues as to what the problems are.  Programs like Ashampoo's Win Optomizer 12.  This can give quite a comprehensive list of everything on the PC I understand.

Or perhaps I should get the Windows event viewer looked at.  Even file associations are wrong.  For instance I have installed VLC player & told it be program for most media file types.  Yet if I click on a file that is MP4 it asks me what program to open it with & I select VCL from the suggested list, I get asked the same question eve If I go back & play a second video file.  Its as if File Association has amnesia.

I have classic file installed could this be the problem?

I haven't had time to try again yet but I can tell you this that everything that has a USB connection causes Windows to make sound.  None of these devises makes Autoplay open up.  This includes portable HDD's both in a caddy or out, phone. tablet, or stick even thought I have  set to to either open to music, picture or notify & ask every time.  As I said it appears to be Windows problem as a quick search on Google reveals that heaps of people have the same unresolved problem.

It's many years since I went anywhere new a cmd line. I have tried doing it a few times but nothing happens other than a message sawing I go the syntex wrong. I don't think I'm typing it incorrectly but I'll wait until a friend comes over to check that I'm doing it correctly.

I seem to recall that a complete scan was done a few months back & no problems were found.  But then this might be like other Windows 10 problems like many other people myself included who can get autoplay to work either.  I think that there may be USB issues in general since a couple of time I have put in a USB stick & it says to check it for errors & fix them if possible.  I let it proceed & when its finished it says that there were no errors.  Bizarre

Any USB flash drive that I plug in appears on the list as do other older passport drives.  When the drive in question appears on list the the Total Size & free space show nothing.

If I go into BIOS & select boot menu I have about 8  choices & I have tried 2 with the same result that the light on the problem drive just flashes its light & nothing happens no matter how long I wait.  If I then unplug drive Windows boots up.

I looked in event logger in Windows & items are listed there.  It offers to look up problem Web but when the browser opens it says that it can't find the page.

If I go to device manager & select disk management the page won't display.  It just hangs until I unplug the drive.

The only place you ever see it is in "This PC"   It appears here only until you select it to try to see the properties which causes machine to lock up for about 5 minutes until the message that the parameters are wrong.

Autoplay doesn't come up.  I have opened it &  set it to always ask for ever type of content but it has never opened.  I'm trying not to format drive since I don't want to loose whats on it.  The drive is 1 year into 3 year warranty.  I know that I could swap it for another but why should I loose all my data & perhaps get another one that has the same problem, especially since the data isn't critical at the moment?

I just realized that I never gave an update about this problem.  Well there is both good news and bad news.  The good news is that I finally have Windows 10 installed but to get it done I had to take it to a PC repair shop to have this happen.

The bad news is that I'm having problems with USB.  I have a 2TB Western Digital Ultra passport drive which Windows acknowledges as a drive but nowhere else on the PC can it be seen. Click on the drive an asking to view properties just gives you about a 5 minute wait before it say parameters are wrong.  It can't be found in devise manager either.  But I'm not alone a quick search of net suggests hundreds of people have the same problem.  Some says that it still works in Windows 7 & that you could copy data off of it, format again & reload data.  But I can't see how that could be done if it can't be seen to be formatted.  Others think that it occurred because they had deleted the special software that comes pre installed.  It appears that WD may have given up on the problem & assigned it to the too hard basket.

Well I have been through the entire routine yet again.  Clicking the link shown above & just trying to do any install even though I want to really would prefer to do 'clean install'.

I have had all of the same messages as before.  It's downloading, something you should check before we proceed, the download, install the huge wait when its says its installing & the reboot that takes be back to where I starts asking If I wanted to do the Windows update to version 10, along with the message that its now failed 4 times but doesn't say why.  Everything is there as before except for it saying where to send the bill for all of my wasted time.  It must be a conspiracy to get you to waste all of your download quotas.  I have a friend who has the exact same problem & the  shop has had his PC for 4 days already & can't get it installed.

If I get that link do I run it from BIOS or just click .exe file?

I just realized that I might have inadvertently caused the failure of the update.  I was told that I should put the disk with the iso file into the burner 7 then click the .exe file.  This is what I did & this failed.

Maybe I should have changed the BIOS first to set Windows to boot from the DVD first.  Could this be the cause of the problem or is this just making things worse or if I'm on correct track would there be anything extra to do when taking this course of action?

I might add that the DVD was a + disk not the older - type.  Mind you I have never had a problem playing or recording either type. I have both a DVD burner & a Blu-ray to choose from.

I did create the full system image along with the repair start up disk.

When I click on the Windows update icon on the taskbar the first thing it says that my system is comparable.

I doubt that any part of Windows 7 is on a separate drive.  I had always kept my SSD 'C' drive exclusively fro programs & kept a second drive in case just for data which was mainly music, photos & video.

Before I started the update I disconnected the this second drive just to ensure that Windows didn't try to install in the wrong location.  I have since reconnected the drive but the update still doesn't run.

I don't understand what you mean my Threshold 2.  I suppose that I could try downloading the entire for a fourth time but feel that its unlikely to help.

I noticed that you have a new version of the tool that looks at Windows 10 & permissions so I downloaded & installed the new version.  I ran the permissions section only as administrator after turning anti virus off.

I used the DVD I had burned with the iso file & tried running it.  I wanted to do I clean install so as to try to put 100% of problem behind me.  The update suggested that it would be better if more updates were done first.  This was done & then it started the install.  I choose the keep nothing option since I presume this must be done if you want a clean install.

The install failed but no reason was given so I have no error number to check out.

I downloaded the update to Windows 10 a couple of months back but didn't try installing it because my PC had a couple of problems that weren't getting resolved & because I wanted to get every thing cleaned up first.  The issues were USB connections weren't working, audio was having problem & some programs would not install.

Since the programs weren't resolved I tried Tweaking program but this hadn't helped.

I was on verge of trying the update for Windows which I had sitting on the PC but not installed when I heard that I could do a 'clean install' if I download an iso file & put it on a DVD.  I selected my version,Pro,64 bit, burnt it & verified it but it would not install because it said that it was the wrong version for my machine.  I felt that I hadn't made a mistake when selecting which file to download. I now have a second DVD with it on.  I used Explorer to look at files on disk.  Both have the exact same number of files & folders but slightly different file size totals.

I friend was here at this time & he suggested that I just install what I had already had downloaded. We tried this & it appeared to be going OK then said that I had a problem & needed to install another update, which would be in addition to the 13 that had been automatically updated earlier in the same day.

It then appeared that the big update was being installed, it rebooted & I still had Windows 7 64 bit, along with a message that a paging file could not be found.  This might be because I think it was on another drive which I had disconnected because I wanted to ensure that Windows would only be on my SSD 'C' drive.

Then up pops the Windows 10 update flag on the taskbar suggesting that I DOWNLOAD & INSTALL the update, which I had already had twice along with 2 files as ISO file.

I  now have 2 ISO files on DVD's along with 2 copies of the update file. These things seem to be just going around in circles.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  Is there anyway to get the Windows update notice on taskbar to see the downloaded file or even better to get it to do a 'clean install' from the DVD I now have?  Is it time to take PC to the shop?

Thanks in advance

General Computer Support / Repair hangs
« on: October 31, 2015, 05:28:12 pm »
I had been having several problem with Windows so I downloaded version to try to see if it might fix problem with my USB3 connections, sound problem (only on one program) &

A couple of months ago on the day I went to hospital I got the Windows 10 file downloaded but have be loath to try installing it until my problems had been cleared up.  The intention was to get the PC cleared of clutter & working well then install the New Windows & clone the system both before & after the update.  I had held back until the dust settled with this program because unless I'm very wrong it will actually just install over what you had before with what you have warts and all & can't actually fix anything. Is this assumption correct?

So I started the latest version of Tweaking thinking that it would take about the same amount of time it usually does.  I had forgotten that we had to go out had to go out I left the PC running.  I realized this morning that I had forgotten to check on the results.  I found that the PC was still stuck on 10 of 45 & had been running for about 15 hours.

I used snipping tool to capture screen then used CTRL,ALT,Del to try to stop program hanging & after a few presses the program moved on to finish its job & then rebooted.

The fixes that I hoped might happen didn't.  Should I try reverting back using the restore point?  Should I just let Windows 10 be installed?  Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance

I tried the repair idea that you suggested but I never saw it report a problem.  I wonder if it part of a problem that I now have with Chrome which stopped working as well.  I installed Firefox as a substitute.  I uninstalled Chrome, did a bit of cleanup before downloading Chrome again.  But it still won't run.  It says that there is a problem but doesn't say what.  I downloaded Chrome portable to USB but that didn't work either.

I'm struggling a bit to understand all of this but if I'm correct this might be part of Microsoft Net Framework.  I can see version 4.5.2 is installed.  Might it help if I were to delete this file & download it again from Microsoft or is this apt to do more damage?

Everytime I try to load the link to Logitech's Myharmony, so that I can update my remote control I get this strange error message.  Not only do I not understand what it means I can't see any reference on the Logitech site/forums.

Any ideas as to what is the problem?

Pressing the reset button on case & holding down F8 doesn't help either.

I was going to run your program & if I recall correctly I ran a pre scan first before I noticed that the suggestion was for best results run in safe mode.

I rebooted in safe mode but my wireless keyboard & mouse would not work & I suspect that Windows hadn't reached a stage where the it would.

I plugged in a different keyboard & Mouse & with this I was able to reach the tab to untick the safe mode option for when I rebooted.

I got out of 'safe mode' by using a different keyboard & mouse which allowed me to get to tab & untick safe mode.  I then told the machine to restart.  After the machine restarts what happens next is that I see the 4 blue Windows icon, then the screen goes black & remains stuck there.
