General Computer Support / Re: Problems with Lenovo bloatware

Okay, I'm an IT-amateur, so I had to be a bit resourceful.

On the Lenovo site about deleting the LSE it says under Windows 8.1 that these files shall be deleted:

Deletes all files installed by the LSE module, which include
C:\windows\system32\wpbbin.exe
C:\windows\system32\LenovoUpdate.exe
C:\windows\system32\LenovoCheck.exe

I checked in my Windows Explorer and don't see these files. Is that conclusive evidence that I don't have this LSE?

What a smart idea, Boggin!

It's the first time I see the task scheduler. I assume all the Microsoft\Windows tasks are okay?

The only Lenovo task is indeed this Customer Feedback Program, scheduled EVERY DAY! But this is not a normal program, I can't find it in Programs and Features nor in Revo Uninstaller Pro. It seems to be an application? See screenshot. How do I delete that?

I also looked for the Lenovo Service Engine elsewhere, searched the whole laptop on these words without results.

Awaiting instructions.

Boggin, as regards your link: You may want to have a read of this article to see if you are affected as it looks like more spyware from Lenovo. https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht073614?tabName=Solutions

I have Windows 8.1 on my laptop, so it seems this one doesn't affect me. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yoohooooooooooooooo!!!!!

Could use a bit of good news. :S

But.......I downloaded the ReadMe file and there it says:

"This package updates the basic input/output system (BIOS) on IdeaPad Z41-70/Z51-70."

Should I do the BIOS update anyways to be sure? Or can I find out if I have this Lenovo Service Engine?

Again I suggest a new post. What's the best name to give it? How to remove Lenovo spyware?

Shane, Julian, Boggin?

I'm not sure, I have a Z50-70. It says in the list Z41-70/Z51-70. Does that mean only those two models or everything in between?

This is a very important issue. I suggest we make this into a new topic for everyone with a Lenovo pc to find easily. Shall I open a new topic?

Thanks, Samson!

That's pretty scary. I was advised to buy a Lenovo laptop by the head of the technical dept. of my PC shop as being the best laptop available at the moment for its internal stability and high quality materials on the outside. Did I make a mistake then?

The article doesn't give any links to the BIOS updates and that's way over my head anyway, so I need you guys to help me out with that as well. Anyone in for that?

Thanks, Julian! Also for the tip about Windows Repair. Super! You guys are amazing in helping us out. So grateful!!!

That made me think: it might be a good idea to run Windows Repair now before I start using the laptop for real, because I have done a number of re-installations now. [Don't ask, I'm DONE with re-installing!  :omg: Although I'm getting better and faster at it each time!  :cheesy:] Also, because I read that partitioning might cause deletion or damaging? of files and the only files I left on the laptop before partitioning were the Windows files, of course.

Is that a good idea? I have a screenshot of the Windows files that are present now. I'll send it along.

Oh, I noticed I still had to click Apply to finalize the latest changes in my Partitioning Adventure.

Here the latest screenshot. Maybe it's different somehow now.

Hi guys,

I managed to partition C: into C: D: and E: for Windows program files, my personal files and my music files respectively. I think I'm SO COOL right now, 'cause I thought that I couldn't do that and it was pretty scary to do!  :omg:  :cheesy:

Could you please check my screenshot of the present state of the partitions whether everything is okay? There are more partitions and I just wanna be sure everything is fine as it is now or maybe something can be improved.

Thanks!

Okay guys, I managed to get rid of almost all the bloatware and so far so good, the laptop is still functioning, haha.

It was superannoying that there is just no information on the web about whether a program is necessary or can be deleted. I find that Lenovo itself should explain on their site what all these programs are. I saw many people asking questions about this but there weren't many answers. And there were programs that needed to stay like the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver ! Who knows what that is if you're not an IT person like you!!

So, pffff, just 3 programs left for you to say whether they can stay or go.

The first I'm most concerned about as it might have to do with sending my data somewhere.
The second I think has to stay for as far as I was able to find out.
The third I have no idea.

Can you help out?

Thanks a lot, guys!! I really appreciate your help. Have to figure out what is best to do..... BTW, Superfish had been detected by MBAM and BullGuard right away.

Is there a possibility to re-install 8.1 without using the recovery key and avoid all the bloatware to re-appear? I have its licence key.

Shane, are you going to post something about the privacy issues with Windows 10? Do you know if it is possible to make a local account again and prevent ANY of my data to be sent ANYWHERE?  :D :D :D

Hello,

I'd like to ask for help with removing bloatware from my brand-new Lenovo laptop. I tried to find info online about whether I could/should remove programs but couldn't find much. So I just did what seemed right :(. Now I find myself with a few problems I don't know how to solve. I thought about re-installation (without using the recovery key!) but maybe you can help me avoid that. :)

My main reason to remove all bloatware is that I don't want ANY connection to some cloud or company online through these programs.

I used Revo Uninstaller but I don't understand why some programs don't appear in Revo. Not only some of the bloatware doesn't show, also programs like 7-zip or Bonjour (can I delete the latter? I have Windows 8.1 on my laptop and don't have Apple products. This goes for the other 2 Apple programs as well, see my screenshots).

I have made several screenshots of various places where programs show. I assume they speak for themselves. Can somebody please tell me which remaining bloatware I can delete and how, in case they don't show in Revo? Like Lenovo Messenger and Veriface.

The only program I'd like to keep are the User Manuals. They might be handy, I suppose. Please feel free to add comments about other programs you see that I don't need. The Van Dale programs are my dictionaries and they're staying. :D

Lenovo Photo Master and SHAREit I uninstalled but still show (why?) but they are empty folders.

There are two Windows Driver Packages from Lenovo that I don't dare remove as drivers are like super-essential parts to me as a lay-woman. :) Can they go too?

A lot of questions. I do hope someone will go through the trouble of telling me what to do.

Thank you for being there! :D

Ok, I understand.

Mine have a two year warranty. Wish I had known you prefer Western Digital, bought a portable Seagate HD too......
Well, for next time then.

Thanks, Shane, for your time and sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated!

Bye and take care,

« on: February 17, 2015, 07:22:25 am »
Hi Shane,

I had the disk checked by the head of the tech dept. of my pc shop and he said the HD in its case was dead and the HD itself was already showing signs of malfunctioning, so it would be totally dead soon. With 2,5 years it was only just past its warranty, so I had to buy a new one. I wasn't happy, these don't come cheap!

But to end this on a positive note: the new one, another Seagate 2 Tb, is a 3.0, so much faster and that's great!

Just a thought: is it a good idea to do the Windows Repair program because the malfunctioning of the HD could have caused some damage somewhere? I mean, just to be on the safe side?

General Computer Support / (Solved) External HD crashed
« on: February 09, 2015, 11:46:05 am »
Hi Shane,

Nice to be here again, but I'm back with a new problem. :((

Yesterday I connected a Nikon compact camera for the first time via a USB port in a hub. Shortly after that I got like a hundred times the same message that external HD G: had to be formatted. I closed the window every time.

I have 2 external HDs, one a 2.0 with the letter F:, the other a 3.0 with G:. Both Seagate 2 Tb. I don't know if these two events are connected or that the HD just crashed at about the same time as I connected the camera. I don't really remember what I was doing because usually I do three things at the same time :-D and it's possible that I was backing up some pictures from the camera to the F: HD when it happened. Because these external HDs are big guys I have them both connected to a USB port directly (one 2.0, one 3.0) to avoid problems, so not to a port on a hub, so we can rule out that the hub gave overload problems. Then I noticed that the pc didn't recognize my one external HD at all anymore in Windows Explorer. I rebooted, but that didn't help. Today I saw that there was still only one HD in Explorer and it was the 3.0 but it got the letter F from the 2.0. I know it was the 3.0 because in the name in Explorer it says 3.0. I changed it back to G for my own overview. Today I tried all kinds of ways to get the 2.0 started again, but nothing. It doesn't make a sound and it's not warm, so I guess it's just dead. It's not recognized in Computer Management either, nor in Devices and Printers. In the log files I found a Warning at the time this problem occurred. It says that an error has been discovered on device/harddisk2/DR11 during the....and then there's a word I don't understand in Dutch so how can I translate that? :S I'll give it a try: something like "during the processing of an exchange file".

What can I do to get it back in the game or is it unrepairable? It's 2,5 years old and I use it almost daily for backups. I still have it connected to the pc and there are no messages of formatting anymore. I got a bit confused which disk was malfunctioning because of the letter change, but the 3.0 seems to be alright. Below the log file, translated, if that's any help to you.

Thanks for your trouble!

Lady

Okay, I understand. As far as I gather now, some Word files seem to have been corrupted as well by whatever did the overall corruption in the first place. That resulted in these errors in the dictionary templates after doing Windows Repair. Like I said, I got this fixed for 90% and that's fine for now. In a while I might re-install Office. I think that will solve that. Right now I'm TOTALLY DONE with spending my valuable time on the pc! :-D

The pc is still doing great. This week I had the pc checked by the head of the tech dept. of my pc store and he said it was 100% ok! Isn't that wonderful?! I'm so proud! And now that I know that these event logs mean nothing (I find that pretty weird, but okay), I can finally say I FIXED THE PC!! With the help of a few very nice people and Windows Repair!

Again, I'm VERY thankful for this program, Shane. You're the best!

Take care,
Lady

242
Thanks Jraju, that's very helpful!  :cheesy:

243
So I put Solved in my first post. Although it's not solved 100% and I did it myself, hahaha. But for those VERY few people out there who have digital dictionary programs linked to Word and encounter problems after doing Windows Repair, I hope my info helps. Oh, and Shane, I thought it would be interesting for you to know about this issue since Windows Repair did something to these dictionary files, since I had no issues with them before the Repair.

I thought of this: is it an idea to do the Windows Repair once every so often as a kind of overhaul or is it only to be done with serious issues?

/quote]I am that way because I have believe in karma, that and it makes me feel good to treat people with respect, besides they normally give respect in return

Well, then we are like minds, Shane! I sensed that. Did you see my signature?  :-D

244
Oh, and one last thing: I said before that I didn't get notifications of replies but that was because they got into the spam folder and Outlook webmail doesn't forward the spam messages to my e-mail program, so that's why.... :S

245
Oh yeah, I should say the problem is solved. Am not sure how to do that. :S

246
Oh I forgot, the last post before my last by JohnVanDaal belongs somewhere else.

247
Hi Shane, since the Repair there were some distortions in the templates for my dictionaries in Word. So it affected the files of the dictionaries, not Word itself. I managed to get it like 90% straightened out and I can live with that. It's too complicated to try and go fix it here. I mean, that will take up TOO much time!

The pc is still doing pretty well, almost perfect I'd say. I kept on getting Eventlogs almost every time I had shut down the pc saying there had been an unexpected closing down of the system (again, I didn't experience any problems shutting it down). See a previous screenshot I posted earlier. But from Dec. 4 they stopped. Might return again, we'll see.

Since I solved a lot of the issues already myself I asked the head of the tech. dept. of my pc shop to take a thorough look at the pc and he agreed! I'm happy! He's a nice guy too. I hope to be able to do this next week and I'll let you know what his findings are, okay?

Thanks again, Shane, for your time and effort. And for being NICE! The World is in NEED of nice people. :-D

Take care,

Lady

248
It's not solved yet! This problem I'm still working on happened after I did the Windows Repair. I might still need your help if I don't get it fixed. And I didn't get an answer to my question about the Error I'm still getting every day in the System Logs about the unexpected closing down of the pc. And what do you mean "edit the first post"?

249
Oh, I forget, the pc is running really smoothly!!! I'm soooo thrilled. THANK YOU, Shane! You're a blessing!

250
No, I didn't (yet) because IMHO this is not part of the setup of Word. I added the dictionaries myself. I have one more ace up my sleeve, going to remove the files that aren't working fully yet with Revo Uninstaller, so every bit is removed and then try re-installing them. But I have no time for it whatsoever right now. Will be back. :-D
