General Computer Support / System tray tool tips windows 10
« on: October 01, 2015, 10:03:59 am »
Hey guys,

A couple of minutes after my system has booted up, the tool tips that pop up on system tray icons when you hover over them will stop working. Any idea what causes this?

General Computer Support / Volume shadow copy service
« on: May 04, 2014, 09:57:42 am »
I thought this service was supposed to shut down after inactivity?. The service is set to manual and it starts with windows. My back ups work fine and so does my registry back ups. I did a fresh install of windows 7. On my old install, it would shutdown after back ups were done. Which way is it supposed to be? I ran the windows repair program for it.

General Computer Support / Can a blown motherboard also take out the cpu?
« on: January 23, 2014, 11:22:35 am »
Hey Bud,

Here is my problem. I was stress testing my amd 8320 on my asrock 990fx extreme 9 and the system shut down...then I could smell something metalic.. crap!!!  ooppss  So my first guess was the PSU as my system would not boot (nothing from the motherboard, not lights, nothing). Pulled out the PSU and tested it and it works (hooked up fans to and it runs). So I figured I would order a new motherboard (the one that blew up smelled bad right around he VRM's but no sign's of burning or bulging capacitors, obviously the motherboard took a crap ). So I ordered the Asus crosshair V formula z. Hooked everything up with old power supply and old CPU, the motherboard boots with lights and fans spining  but will not post with error code FF (nothing specific about it in the manual). However the led on the motherboard indicates a cpu problem. So I didn't trust it, went and bought another PSU and same results. My question after this long winded speech is. When the asrock blew could it have taken the CPU with it? Oh, also tried different RAM in the new motherboard as well, same result.
What could have caused this motherboard to fail? It's only 6 months old (I know anything can happen). It is supposed to be thier top of the line board for the FX furnace/power hungry waffer.
I have just order the 8350 and hope it works with the new motherboard.

Tweaking.com Support & Help / System Restore & Registry Back up
« on: December 15, 2013, 04:17:46 pm »
Hey Bud,

I currently have system restore enabled on my old lap top. Would the registry back up program suffice instead of system restore? I'm leaning toward yes. Looking for validation though.

Everything Else / Prime 95?
« on: August 29, 2013, 07:18:03 pm »
Hey Bud,

As you know I just built a new system with the FX 8320 and Asrock's new 990fx extreme 9 motherboard. I have overclocked this to 4.620 ghz (using the multiplier and fsb) with 1.365 volts with LLC set to 50% which ramps voltage up to 1.406 volts when under full load. Now using AMD's overdrive stress tester and AIDA64 stress tester for 6 hours a piece it passes with flying colors. If I use prime 95 it will fail immediately. So to further test I have been playing hours of crysis 3 and battlefield 3 and the system has been running for 7 days straight without shutdown while also using the system for normal use and no problems at all. My question is this. Is Prime 95 outdated and just not necessary for modern CPU's? I understand that it's possible that I haven't hit the right circumstance to crash my system, but so far so good? What do you think?

My core temps never go higher than 50 degrees celsius

General Computer Support / Usb 3.0 Problems
« on: August 22, 2013, 09:09:58 pm »
Hey bud,

I am having a problem with onboard USB 3.0. I have 4, and none work. My motherboard is the Asrock 990fx Extreme9 (this board overclocks like a champ!). When I try to install the Etron USB 3.0 drivers I get a message saying that driver software was unsucessful. Etron will show it is installed on windows ( I have removed it and re-installed). The first pic below shows what happens with no drivers installed, but the USB 3.0 controller is enabled in the bios, and it stays that way even with etron installed. There is power going to the ports ( I checked with my micro Cruzer USB stick, it lite up briefly). Any idea how to fix this.

Hey Shane,

I need some advice. I am currently working on a new build and I am trying to decide on 2 Asus 7870 GHZ edition cards or the Asus matrix 7970 platinum edition (expensive I know). Two cheaper cards for crossfire or 1 higher end card? Here is what I am looking at.

It's been a while. Been busy with work. I have been using an ssd since my new system build back around Christmas. Should I use chckdsk.exe to check for errors or is this simply not necessary on an ssd?

General Computer Support / Re-Install of windows 7
« on: February 10, 2013, 07:46:13 am »
Hey Shane,

My aunt is a teacher. For her work she uses a dell. It came with windows 7 home premium 64 bit (she cant remember if it came with service pack 1 or not). It needs maintenance so bad, it crash's all the time. I was thinking about just doing a reinstall, as she also wants to upgrade to 0ffice 2010. Two problems however.

1. She has a ton of files and not all stored in central locations.
2. Since it was store bought, there is no disk for re-install, just the usual partition for dells reinstall.

What is the best way to handle this? I would like to reinstall with a windows 7 home premium 64 bit iso if I can, that way I can avoid the bundled crap. Where would be the best place to get an iso windows 7 file?

The amount of word document files she has is unbelievable man, it is got to be thousands (she is a teacher after all). Whats the best way to back them up.

Also she uses outlook and doesn't want to loose all of her emails. What is the best way to back them up for use in outlook 2010?

General Computer Support / rundll32.exe
« on: January 14, 2013, 12:13:04 pm »
Shane,

I am having this problem with rundll32.exe.  In the first shot you can see the speaker icon in the system tray. When I right click it to bring up sound options, it will not show up (I use this to switch to digital output so i can listen to music through house speaker system) on monitor but rundll32.exe is present in task manager (Shot2). If I open another window of a different program it will show (not immediately thought, almost like it needs a kick start). This only happens after my system has been running longer than a hour or so. I have run windows repair (reset registry and file permissions, register system files and repair exe association), ran avast and malwarebytes (full scans). Before all of this I ran check file system and system file check. I don't know where to go from here. Can you help?

Everything Else / Ping
« on: January 12, 2013, 10:57:02 am »
Shane
I'm on steam now. I'm trying to play ravaged but I keep getting warnings that my ping is too high. I changed it to the lowest setting of 250 but I get the same thing and sometimes vehicles in the game will show running from the same spot over and over. Could this be router issue?
