Everything Else / avast
« on: February 27, 2012, 12:18:22 pm »
Hi Shane

Is the paid version of avast better than the free version? So far I think the free version is great! Also is the paid version heavier on resources?

Just a shot in the dark, but have you tried to run system restore in safe mode?

I've had this problem before with iTunes. This should fix it, but follow instruction to a "T" since it involves registry settings.

http://www.techgeekandmore.com/2009/09/27/apple-fix-for-itunes-error-the-registry-settings-used-by-the-itunes-drivers-for-importing-and-burning-cds-and-dvds-are-missing/

This will give you the drivers you need and tell you how to enable them.  I haven't needed this since I upgraded to iTunes 10 though. Hope all goes well.

Everything Else / Recovery partition
« on: February 20, 2012, 01:29:19 pm »
Hi Shane,
Can I clone my hp recovery partition to an external drive, then delete the recovery partition and expand my c drive? I'm using vista and I have the full version of macrium reflect installed for images and disk clones.

Everything Else / Services
« on: February 10, 2012, 02:39:45 pm »
Hey guys

When you set a service to manual does windows still load it at boot up, and on the flip side of that, if a service is disabled, does windows load that at boot up? Most of the services I don't use are set to manual. I'm curious if windows is still loading them, just not using them.

Hi Shane
Does the free version of Avast have realtime protection with it(auto definition updates). I'm currently using MSE, which is pretty good on system resources. How is Avast on resources compared to MSE?

Alright, I couldn't find out what it was supposed to be by the great gazooogle (some say auto, some say manual), so I went to the next best thing,...... my brothers computer, he doesn't tweak it or anything, heck he will not even let me tweak it for him, he just wants it to work he says. I had him look through his and it is started and on auto. He is using windows 7 service pack 1. Hope this helps.

I thought blackviper said windows 7 was manual and vista was auto (I put it back to that). I'll check later.

Great thanks. I think it was set to automatic. I'll set to manual then stop it and see what happens.

Shane

I was also going through my services and this one was set to automatic. I changed it to manual. I looked at black vipers site but I still don't have a clear understanding of what it does. Do you?

Everything Else / Scans
« on: January 15, 2012, 04:43:09 pm »
Shane

I have MSE, SuperantiSpyware (paid), and Malwarebytes(paid). I've been running full system scans (at different times of course) once a week for all three. Is this required or overkill?

Hi Shane

Thanks for adding services and task scheduler to the main drop down window in programs. I see registry editor is there too. Could you add msconfig on next update? Will this self update when it's open?

Good job with this!

Hey guys

Does anybody know to speed up the initial start up of fire fox after a fresh boot (it takes about 4 sec's to start)to make like ie. I have 6 add-ons and 8 extensions (java, adobe, shock-wave, silver-light etc).
Other than that it is smoking fast.

One more way to fix this (at least in vista).
1. Go to network and sharing center.
2. At the bottom look for "Show me all the files and folders I am sharing" and click it.

At this point your pc will compile the data and show all files and folders. Once this happens you....
3. Click to highlight a Folder or File.
4. Press Control and A (Highlights everything).
5. Right click over highlighted folders and files.
6. Look for Share in the menu and click it.
7. Click on stop sharing.

This gets rid of the sharing icon.

If your sharing folders and files, this might not help. But if you don't share anything like me, it should work fine.

Shane sorry I'm late on this :omg:. I meant to post it earlier
