Tweaking.com Support & Help / Bug in Registry Backup (v3.53) part 2
« on: June 29, 2020, 11:21:55 am »
- There is another bug in Registry Backup v3.53.
- When I have the program set to make only one backup per day, then I still can manually make  more than one copie / backup of the registry.

52
- Nope. "Non Paged pool" = memory for system device drivers.
- Watch this video:

- WR only registers a limited amount of files. Perhaps registering more/all files could solve this problem.
- Open the CMD.exe with admin rights. Put the following lines in a plain text file:

      cd c:\windows\system32
      FOR %1 IN (dir *.DLL /s /b) DO REGSVR32 %1 /s

- Save the file with a *.bat extension and run this file.

- Run the program SFCfix. That is amore powerful tool than SFC /scannow

- I would try something else first.
- System Restore uses the VSS (Volume Shadow System) sub-system in Windows (e.g. Win 7). To test whether or not VSS is working try making a backup of the registry first.
1) Run - at least - the first 5 repairs of Tweaking's Windows Repair and then also run the repair "Repair Volume Shadow Copy Service" (Repair # 18). Or simply run them all. The purpose is to repair VSS but that requires that a bunch of other things need to work as well (e.g. WMI (repair #5))
2) Open Tweaking's Registry Backup (comes with WR) and make sure you untick "Always use Fallback Method" (in the "Advanced Settings" tab). Then try to let the program (Registry Backup) make a backup. If that succeeds then the VSS system is OK.

- There are indeed circumstances in which System Restore doesn't work. But I don't know the reasons why it sometimes works and why it in other cases it doesn't work.

- Compare the registry content with the content of "Winmgmt.reg" !!!

- But WR doesn't write the entire content of that registry entry. It only writes a part of that key into the registry.

- Make a backup of the registry.
- Use Eusing's Registry Defragment program to compact the registry files. As time goes by the registry gets more and more bloated.

http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_defrag/registry_defrag.htm

I assume that after this exporting those keys the files will have the same size.

- You must compare the visible content of that part of the registry (export it first) and the file "wmimgmt.reg" (open them with e.g. Notepad). If they are the same before you change that from "netsvc" to "winmgmt" then you can replace "winmgmt.reg" with your own version.
- If you install a new version of WR the all info will be overwritten. So, you need to keep a copy of all the appropriate files for the next version of WR.

- In the days of Windows XP everyone was running a 32 bit system. But as time went by more and more people started to use a 64 bit systems. It seems it was MS made a mistake here at this point. I am NOT convinced that Shane is able to provide a solution for this problem/mistake.

- The 2 repairs called "Repair WMI" and "Restore Important Services" both write the info from "Winmgmt.reg" into/to the registry.

@Plox: In reply #2 I gave a way to "fix" this problem.

- Was Plox' reply removed ?
- Nope. WMI is repaired in repairs #5 and #25.

- Yes, I re-read that one thread once again and it seems "Plox" has indeed a 32 bit (!!!) Win 7 Ultimate system.

@Boggin:  It should be "-k netsvcs" instead of "-k netswcs" (with a "w").

@Plox:  Is your Win 7 Ultimate system a 32 bit system ?

- I re-read that old thread and it seems that is the common thing in the thread. It seems that when the user has a 32 bit system (Vista or Win 7) this errors occurs. Then it seems that the user must replace the text

      -k netscvs

with the text

      -k winmgmt.

- When you open that "winmgmt.reg" with e.g. Notepad then you'll see the Original content. That info/data is copied into the registry by WR each time when a few repairs are run.

- You can change the content of the registry info yourself for the next time(s) you run WR.

- Change the content of that registry entry (think: Regedit). Export the content of the registry info that is under/in the subkeys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Winmgmt]  and
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Winmgmt\Parameters]

under the name "winmgmt.reg" in the subfolder "XXXXX\files\regfiles\7". XXXXX is the folder in which you installed WR.

WARNING: Make a copy of the registry first. E.g. with  the Tweaking's Registry Backup program. (Also included in the WR package).

- Windows checks whether or not there has been a change of the computer set up (in your case a different/larger drive). If there has been a change then Windows will ask for a license key or you need to re-install Windows from scratch.
- Don't worry, all the Windows system files won't be wiped but moved to a folder called "C:\Windows.old". And making a backup of your (personal) data is always a good idea before re-installing Windows.

- Perhaps System Restore has some "secret options" that can be used to push Windows into making a (large) SRP. I tried to GOOGLE it but to no avail

General Computer Support / Re: Restore Point on Windows Repair

- No, the decision on how much to put in the SRP is made by Windows.

- With some GOOGLEing I cam up with the following article:

https://www.lifewire.com/what-is-a-restore-point-2625988

But I don't trust this information. I think the interval between creating 2 SRPs is much larger (than 7 days for Windows 7).

- The problem is NOT located in WR but in Windows itself. So, don't blame WR but blame Windows 7, 8 (??) and 10 (??) instead.
- Windows will make such a System Restore Point (SRP) every say 2, 3 or 4 weeks even when nothing important has changed. It's called something like "Planned Restore Point". Only when major things have been changed (such as a new (Windows) update or a new program installed) or any of the mysterious, unknown conditions have been met then Windows will make such SRP.
- So, when the user wants let WR make a SRP then it will be Windows who decides whether or not such a SRP will be made and when.

- I noticed that when I installed WR v4.3.0 there was one file called "Bowser.reg". This file was in the subfolder "C:\program files(x86)\.............\files\regfiles\vista". Shouldn't this name be "Browser.reg" ?? (with an "r" between the "b" and "o"). Like it is in other "regfile" subfolders for Windows XP, Win 7 or Win 8 ??
- Or is this a typo made by MICROSOFT that only happens in Vista ?

75
- I fear the program doesn't work on a Win 2000 system. It was written for a XP system or newer Operating System.
