Do you use Windows XP Service Pack 2? If so, you need to install Service Pack 3 To get back up without a problem

What service pack is installed? And have you tested the hard drive for any bad sectors yet?

I always use custom for MS updates in XP. Also the windows updates takes a LONG time to load now I have noticed. I did a fresh install of XP sp3 on a customers computer, older computer, 1 core cpu. And it took Windows updates 3 hours to finally show me what updates where needed.

So the older and slower the CPU the longer windows updates take. And come April no updates will come out for XP any more, so once your up to date you can just leave windows updates off :-)
