right click menu gone
« on: April 04, 2014, 08:30:22 pm »
Hello Shane

I suddenly find that my right click menu has disappeared. My mouse is ok as I have tried it on my wifie's PC. I seem to recall a few years ago having the same issue and I think I downloaded something that ........merged?........? I wish I could write a more detailed essay but that's it in a nutshell.

Which version of windows do you have?

If you have win xp you can try this:
Quote
Open Start menu properties and enable dragging and dropping.

New Start menu:-Right-click on Start button/Taskbar>select Properties>Taskbar and Start menu properties>Start menu>Customize>Advanced>Under Start menu items check the box against 'Enable dragging and dropping'>ok
Classic Start Menu:-Right-click  on Start menu/Taskbar>Select Properties>Taskbar and Start menu properties>Start menu>Customize>under Advanced start menu options>Check the box against 'Enable dragging and dropping'.>ok

Or in Xp you can try register these files:
Click Start And Run copy and paste these:
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

If you have win 7 you can try this:
Quote
In Windows Explorer, click a file with the left mouse button and keep the button held down. Then press the Escape key. Drag and drop is miraculously re-enabled.

Let me know what Thomas had you try works or not, if it doesnt then I will have you check the registry for the right click menu settings and see if anything is missing

Ah, I'm running W7, and incidentally Thomas' suggestion did not work for me.

Ok first lets make sure the poicly in Windows to disable the right click didnt get enabled somehow.

You need to check 2 locations in the registry

HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Under both of those see if you have a NoViewContextMenu in either of those locations. If you do remove it and then reboot.

Lets go from there :-0

OK now lets make sure it isnt something odd like the right click button simply doesnt respond on the system, it is possible to disable mouse buttons after all.

If you open your web browser or any other program, like word or notepad. Are you able to right click in those and get a menu?

Those menus are totally different from Windows default right click menu. So if those dont work either then I know it has to do with more than just the default right click menu :-)

I cannot use right click in either word, notepad, nor either of my web browsers. (IE, Chrome)
I have tried disabling my (reversing) my mouse button for the click function. Reversing works ok.

OK so the right mouse button isnt being picked up it seems.

You said when you reverse the mouse buttons you get the right click menu, and the other button works as well?

Oh, what I meant was, if I reverse the primary mouse button I am able to "select" with the right mouse button but I cannot get a context menu with the left. Same is true the other way around. I did that test to ensure that the mouse buttons were not at fault. From this I would surmise that it is in fact a software issue, but where?.....

Ok so something has disabled the right click option system wide or disabled the right click button option.

What kind of mouse is it? Reason I ask is some models of mice have software you can download to set the buttons. Such as my logitech gaming mouse. It has side buttons that tick me off because when I hit them on accident it makes the page I was on go back and I lose everything I typed. So I used their software to disable the side buttons.

Now even in that one it doesnt let me disable the right button as it does all the extras. Mainly because the right button is always needed.

Also i dont remember if I asked, what version of Windows are you on?

Eureka !!!!!!! I found the solution !!!!!

I shake considerably and therefore need software to help me control my mouse. In the UI I had ticked the two boxes as shown, This in turn disabled my middle\right mouse button functions.
Thanks for your considerable time and effort. Hopefully this might be applied to similar software in your quest to help others in the future.
