Computer help problem persists and need help with FF 12
« on: May 17, 2012, 09:20:55 am »
Hello
As the title indicates, when I click on computer help with either FF12 or MSIE 9 a brief ad comes up then nothing happens -in other words, Computer Help does not work for me so I hope my post here will be accepted. I had posted this previously and thought you would like to know it still does not work for me. At that time I sent you two prntscrns, as requested.

My question is, why can I not get Firefox to work in the "import from another browser" area of favorites.
I have to use the HTML choice. It used to work a long time ago but I cnnot find out why I no longer can use that .
Thank you
Peter

I sent them an email about it putting an ad on a link (Which bugs me) till they get back to me book mark this link so you can get tot eh computer help section :-)

http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php/board,8.0.html

With firefox the only time I use the import feature is when starting a new profile. For some reason it imports the book marks better than doing it manually.

When ever I do it manually it puts the imported book marks into a sub folder in the bookmarks and I hate that. Not sure why they do it that way.

I need to get the favorites from MSIE 9 into FF12 .
Are we agreeing the only way is to use the HTML feature I mentioned?

Go to show all bookmarks, you have an import option at the top. Do the import from another browser.

If it fails then you need to do the html option

That is the issue. "Import from another browser" is ghosted or gray and does not function leading me to think I need to adjust something. It is the same on both pcs.

Btw, is it legal, ethical and in good taste to send your program pik and some info to other forums and people I visit or would you prefer not to have me do that?

Found this :-)

This can happen if you are in private browsing mode which disables some menu items.

In the Tools menu select Options to open the options window
    Go to the Privacy panel
Change the setting "Firefox will" to "Remember History", or if it is set to "Use custom settings for history", de-select the setting "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"

I understand, and thank you.
I just left a lot of information about your new creation at the Windows 7 forum and with David in London. Waiting to hear from him.

Hi again Shane
I just heard from Ztruker in What the Tech about the restore issue requiring a linux cd or some botable media and copying files and do not feel this is something I or the average user would be able to do.
I do hope it will help others however.
At least I have Acronis and system restore which is pretty good.
From my end, thank you for trying and I can see where those skilled with pcs have a tendency to use devices non tech people cannot do, or do very easily.

That was simply one way. Dont just the program to harshly when in beta :-)

The normal restore is built into the program and as easy as one click. Thus why it has a restore tab :-)

The bootable media is for the extreme, The  "oh crap my computer wont boot" problem

And erunts isn't as simple in that case either

Quote
Restoring the registry with ERDNT - Emergency Scenario I
--------------------------------------------------------

Situation: Windows fails to boot up in normal and safe mode, but you
have a DOS boot disk or another (working) operating system installed
on your PC which is supported by the ERDNT restoration program, and
from which you have full access to the drive(s) containing the corrupt
Windows installation and the registry backup.

Boot up to the working OS, and open the folder containing the registry
backup you want to restore.

If the drive letters are different to as they were in the Windows
where you created the registry backup, you need to edit the ERDNT.INF
file now to reflect the new drive letters, before trying to restore
the registry backup. For example, if the drive with the corrupt
Windows installation is now available as D: instead of C:, then you
would change all C:\... references in the INF file to D:\... . Editing
the file can be done in Windows with the Notepad program, and in DOS
with the EDIT command.

Now run the ERDNT.EXE file to start the restoration program. Select
which registry components to restore (just the system registry will do
in most cases), then start restoration. When the process is complete,
reboot the computer and check if the other Windows installation is
repaired now.

Restoring the registry with ERDNT - Emergency Scenario II
---------------------------------------------------------

Situation: Windows fails to boot up in normal and safe mode, and you
have no other working operating system installed on your PC.

The following two rescue methods require that your PC is configured so
that it can boot from CD. See your BIOS documentation for more
information.

1. Bart's PE Builder
Use another computer with Internet access and CD burning capabilities
to download this free program from the Internet (do a Google search
for it), which will create a bootable Windows CD with full access to
all drives (including NTFS). Boot from this CD, open the File
Management Utility and follow the directions in "Emergency Scenario I"
to run ERDNT and restore the registry.

2. The Windows Recovery Console (Windows 2000 and higher)
Note that you can use this method only if you saved the registry
backup inside the Windows folder, and that using this procedure only
the system registry is restored. This should however get you back into
Windows, from where you can run the ERDNT program to restore user
registries, if necessary.
- Boot your system from the Windows 2000/2003/XP CD-ROM.
- At the welcome screen, press "R" (Windows 2000: "R" then "C").
- Type in the number of the Windows installation you want to repair
  (usually 1), then press ENTER.
- Type in the Administrator password (leave blank if you are unsure
what it is) and press ENTER.
- At the command prompt type
    cd erdnt
or whatever you named your restore folder, then press ENTER.
- If you enabled automatic registry backup on system boot during ERUNT
installation and want to restore one of these backups, type
    cd autobackup <ENTER>
- If you created subfolders for different registry backups (for
example, with the different creation dates), type
    dir <ENTER>
to see a list of available folders, then type
    cd foldername <ENTER>
where foldername is the name of a folder listed by the dir command,
  to open that folder.
- Now type
    batch erdnt.con <ENTER>
to restore the system registry from that folder.
- Type
    exit <ENTER>
and remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive. The system will now reboot
  with the restored registry.

Which as you see also recommends a bootable media in Emergency Scenario II.

In Emergency Scenario I he has a ms-dos exe to help with the restore. Where I won't have a dos exe but it does give me a good idea of having a restore bat file auto made for it :-)

I will be adding a new feature to the program to auto make a restore bat file a user can run from the recovery console and it will be stored with each backup. :-)

This will make things simpler for normal users and will be included on what to do in the help file.

I am sorry for taking up so much of your time. I hope you are not a hunt and peck typer like this 'ole bird.
I was reading about RegBak's recovery as well as ERUNT as I see what you mean; there is the "simple" recovery option but there is also the DOS involved option when you can't boot into the program.
I prejudged and will go to What the tech and just drop a polite little correction.
The beta program by definition needs trial and time. I guess i was abit anxious. I read all you sent but ingested about 80%.
Thank you again and i'll be around to see how it goes. Buenos suerte.

I just came back from changing my post at What the Tech and it reads a lot more encouraging.
I thought there would be no recovery tab working within the program and am really happy to know the progress you are making.
The recovery for the other 2 programs when you cannot boot into the program would need a tutorial for the average user. If yours is more straight forward that would be great.
This is like Volkswagons; making things for the masses to use!
I am shocked that any thing I have said has contributed; thank you for that.

The next version will have a restore batch file just like erunt does to run from the recovery console :-)

This will be 1 of the 3 ways I will show people how they can restore the reg in different situations.

Ok new version is just about done.

Some key points that make it better than erunt :-)

When you have to restore from the recovery console erunt makes a batch file that you run that has some simple copy commands. My reg backup now does this as well so you can restore just like erunt.

But on that I made an improvement. When restoring from the recovery console erunt only restores the system registry and none of the profiles. Mine replaces everything. :-)

2nd improvement. In the Vista and Windows 7 repair options it maps the Windows drive as D: instead of C:. Because of this the restore from erunt will fail. I have made the batch file for these version detect what drive letter Windows is on and restore it properly. So my version support the repair options of the new versions of Windows.

Of course the program still has the restore option built into the program that you would run normally and even in safe mode. Again this can both backup and restore all profiles not just the loaded ones like erunt.

Lastly is the way the backups are stored. If needed if a recovery console or repair options are not available you will be able to do a extremely easy copy and paste from any other environment. Such as loading the drive in another system or loading another OS such as the ones that run off cds.

So my new program has the same 3 made restore options as erunt, but Improved them to be easier and work better with the new versions of windows.

And when it is out of beta I will have both guides and video showing how to do each one.

>Mine replaces everything. :-)
I really like this feature.

It will be a pleasure to show this around;some places do not like copy/paste nor direct references but I see nothing wrong with a link so others can share this new program. The average user, I always refer to, will more than anyone benefit from this because the other programs are within reach of the skilled users.

Once I return home and settle in, get my cracked filling repaired etc etc I will be looking for the tutorial/video.
I do not have an old spare pc so the family desk and lap are not to be messed with.
You have really tackled quite a feat which I am sure will be widely used.
Thank you for taking the time to update me.

Hi Shane
My friend in England would like to join the threads so I sent him a link.
He is MS MVP and a real solid person. He is the one who does software for the big London hospital with pcs and has been both a loyal correspondent. He has beeen a friend and a source of information for a long time.
I hope you two hook up as I am doing my best to accomplish that goal.
He was just telling me about virtual pcs so you can make errors and just remove the os. He would be a great attribute and a nice peson to know. He is a friend at MG with  Tim.

Hi Shane

Peter speaks highly of you in many of the emails he sends me in chatting about computing, that I thought hey I should join this forum, so I did!, I really like the idea of your registry backup app and have downloaded it to test later on this weekend, and will constructively feedback any thoughts on it.
