Need help replacing these files please!
« on: January 27, 2016, 11:00:33 AM »
Hello!
I am using a Toshiba Satellite with 64bit Windows 7.  I was running your repair tool and it says that I have three files that need to be replaced and the SFC does not do this.  I need help replacing these manually:

C:\windows\servicing\Packages\Package_52_for_KB3042058~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1.cat
C:\windows\servicing\Packages\Package_120_for_KB3088195~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.3.mum
C:\windows\servicing\Packages\Package_64_for_KB3088195~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.3.mum

I cannot install any updates at all, and I am sick of dealing with this.  Please help!!

Thank you!

I've uploaded a zip file in it are the missing files and reg file. The reg file is used to add the take owner ship to the right click menu in explorer. Go ahead and merge that file with your registry.

Once that is done go to C:\Windows\servicing\ and right click on Packages and click on take ownership. You will now be able to copy the files into that folder.

The missing files that are in the folder that i've uploaded need to be placed in  C:\Windows\servicing\Packages\ folder.

Then run the pre-scan again, put a check on the box to have it add the cat files back to the database. :cheesy:

(THIS REPAIR IS USER SPECIFIC IF YOU ARE HAVING ISSUES WITH MISSING CAT OR MUM FILES MAKE A POST IN COMPUTER HELP AND I WILL HUNT DOWN THOSE FILES FOR YOU) :cheesy:

Julian -
Thank you for your help.  However it did not work.  I did everything just as you stated, merge with reg, then took ownership.  Then I copied the files over and selected move and replace. After it didnt work the first time, I then went and searched for each individual file, deleted it, then moved over the one that you provided.  Below is the full log of the prescan again:

Scanning Windows Packages Files.

│ These Files Are Possibly Corrupt (Bad Digital Signature): (Total: 3)

3 Combined Problems were found with the packages files, these files need to be replaced (These mainly only effect installing Windows Updates.)
│ The SFC (System File Checker) doesn't scan and replace some of these files, so you may need to replace them manually.

│ THESE FILES DO NOT KEEP THE REPAIRS FROM WORKING; YOU MAY STILL RUN THE REPAIRS IN THE PROGRAM.

│ If you need help in replacing these files, post on the Forums at Tweaking.com for help.

  • You can use the Repair Reparse Points or Repair Environment Variables tools at the bottom of this Window if needed.

  • While problems have been found, you can still run the repairs in the program.

  • But for the best results it is recommended to fix the problems reported in this scan if possible.

  • If you need help fixing any of the items in the log, just post in the forums at Tweaking.com for help.

okay lets rebuild your catroot2 folder
copy and paste this in note pad and save as rebuildcat.bat

Quote
net stop cryptsvc
esentutl /p %systemroot%\System32\catroot2\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\catdb
rmdir /s /q %systemroot%\system32\catroot2.old
md %systemroot%\system32\catroot2.old
xcopy %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 %systemroot%\system32\catroot2.old /s
del /f /q %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\*.*
net start cryptsvc
pause

Lets see how this does, after you run it and it was succesful, reboot the computer. Shortly after the database should start rebuilding.
sometimes this can take awhile be patient

Pardon my dumbness. I'm usually really good about following directions. But I did everything you said and nothing happened. I opened notepad copied and pasted what you sent, saved it to the desktop. Ran the prescan, when it was finished I rebooted the PC and from there nothing happened. Can you please point me into the right direction.

You would need to double click on that .bat file.

You can also create a new catroot2 folder with this cmd at a cmd prompt run as an administrator -

net stop cryptsvc

ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old

net start cryptsvc

shutdown /r /t 00 (to close the cmd window and effect a reboot)
Tom.

Double clicked the link. Reboot. Ran scan. Still the same result. Those same three files are corrupt. Apparently I just don't know what I'm doing or there is no turning back from this lol. I'm just going to turn windows updates off and not update my PC and eventually it will crap out on me. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Yes I did. It ran and did its thing. But it did not take long at all. I thought it would take sometime, but it was quick.
