No network sharing after Windows Repair (AIO)
« on: September 09, 2012, 10:03:17 am »
Hello sir!

I have recovered a PC from a nasty virus infection. Since the virus the windows firewall wouldn't start (specific service error 5).

I read on the internet that this was due to registry access rights, and someone recommended your program to fix it.

So I tried and hell yeah, windows firewall is up and running again!

There's only one thing: it is now impossible for me to enable file&printersharing and networkdetection. The pc and the printer is now completely unvisible from other pc's on the network.

I have verified that all required services are running. So, what could have caused this? Is there anything I can do to enable file&printersharing again?

Thank you very much in advance!

Greetings,
Marcoevich

Have you tried this?: http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/Turn-Windows-features-on-or-off
and http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/185237-network-discovery-turn-off-windows-7-a.html

Hmm, why would I have to look there? File sharing always worked correctly, and now those features would suddenly be removed? That's a rather agressive approach if you ask me..

This. This is what I am trying to do, but everytime I save those changes, return, and then come back at this the changes are undone. The changes I make here don't save..

I am sorry I read it wrong  :shy:

Have you looked so Windows Firewall isn't blocking File and Printer Sharing?

Okay, here's the deal: Windows firewall is blocking network discovery and file & printer sharing. If I turn it off, everything works correctly.

I think the solution that Thomas gave me (click) comes pretty close. Those firewall rules where nowhere to be found, so I exported them, as suggested, from my Winy7 Ultimate machine.

But.. there's still no change. With windows firewall enabled, it doesn't work.

Also, with the Firewall -disabled- the file & printersharing stays on, but network discovery stays off :O See: http://piclair.com/data/1rkxn.jpg Although the button is off, I do have the impression that it works. It can find other PC's on the network with the firewall disabled..

Do you guys have anymore Ideas I can try to enable network discovery etc with windows firewall turned on?

Thank you very much for your help so far!

Did you restore Windows Firewall settings using Restore Defaults function?

I have just tried that but that won't work. Network discovery & file sharing are turned of immediately.

Note that I'm assuming you've already restored the default state of all Windows 7 services.

Please open event viewer (start > enter eventvwr.msc in the search box > left mouse click). Double-click on custom views (left column), search and report here any Critical/Error events in administrative events category.

Since your previous reply I have played a little bit with the firewall. Apparantly restoring the default settings enabled me to allow windows services through the firewall again. So I was able to tick core networking and file & printersharing, and now I have file sharing with the firewall on :D

But, I still cannot find the printer on my PC, and the button for network discovery stays off, although it appears to be working...

We have taken a huge step forward but if we can manage to bring the printer back online, then all is perfect again ;)

If you have any solution or idea, please say so. In the meantime I will look into the logs to check if I can find any weird things there ;)

Edit: right the first entry in the lognotes:

"Printer HP psc 2350 series met gedeelde bronnaam HP psc 2350 series kan niet door de afdrukspooler worden gedeeld. Fout 1. De printer kan niet door anderen in het netwerk worden gebruikt.

In English: "Printer HP psc 2350 series with shared name HP psc 2350 series can't be shared by the printerspooler. Error 1. The printer cannot be used by others in the network".

In this link there are three images about main Windows Firewall exceptions to set in Windows 7 (including Network discovery, which it should be enabled):

Hello guys,

I just rebooted the PC and I was stunned. The print I requested a few hours ago came rolling out all by itself :D

I have checked the status of the printer and it's online now! Also all the checkboxes for network discovery & file and printersharing are ON again. Also windows firewall is on ;)

So thank you very much guys! I'm glad we where able to solve this :D

I do have one last question. The reason why I came here was because the network sharing and stuff didn't work anymore after the All In One fix I found on this site.

Neroilo requested me to look through the eventviewer today and I was stunned by what I saw there.

Please check this out:

Is this normal after running this All In One fix? Apart from the kernel power, I have never seen all those errors before... Where do they come from?

Thx in advance!

About NTFS Id 55:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/support/ee/transform.aspx?ProdName=Windows+Operating+System&ProdVer=5.2&EvtID=55&EvtSrc=ntfs&LCID=1033

It could be caused by a third-party application running in background (like Norton or other antivirus stuff), by a corrupted file system (chkdsk is required) or by a hard-disk issue/failure.

About Kernel-Processor-Power Id 34:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1937971

About SidebySide ID 33, you shouldn't be worried. It means that an application you opened at that moment doesn't find the correct MS Visual C++ version, as explained here:
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=33&eventno=5021&source=SideBySide&phase=1
In this case, it isn't sufficient to know the ID, but the full message to know what version you need.

That's enough. You can safely ignore all warnings (marked with yellow icon) and other events could be just temporary.
