Windows XP Computer Locks Up at Windows Screen
« on: April 16, 2017, 01:38:14 pm »
I tried to do a non-destructive repair as described by Fred Langa and now I cannot boot my computer. (I had done this in the past with no problem)
It does however boot into safe mode but when I tried to do a restore, there were no restore points shown.
I disconnected all the usb devices i have hooked up, and that seemed to change the point at which the stop takes place.
Help!
Thanks, Chuck

Could the XP CD have become corrupt/damaged ?

You may have to change the boot order to boot up with the XP CD but this article will show you how to repair the boot configuration.

https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-repair-or-replace-boot-ini-in-windows-xp-2624512

While I don't have a XP machine to check this out - Win 7 and 10 use bootrec.exe - when you boot into the Recovery Console and select Command Prompt, enter bootcfg /? and that will give a list of cmds that you can use with bootcfg

However, this article is a bit different - http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/fix-mbr-xp-vista/

I have managed to locate the boot log and found that it loads up through mup.sys.
The next file is the MS Tun Miniport adapter which does not load and the hard drive is frozen in the on condition.
I am not sure what this means but if anyone knows please advise me
Thanks much,
Chuck

Hi, Ka6.
Do you mean the stop to denote that it freezes at windows screen.  Since it is older OS, the solution is somewhat hard to find. But anyhow, you say that it boots in safe mode.  Did you try eleminating all the drivers except microsoft in system configuration utility, that is boot ,msconfig command, and try that? It seems that some third party program or drivers is causing this problem. You have to eliminate the cause, by deselecting the third party programs and drivers services in the msconfig. Just open Run command window and type msconfig. it will show the boot options menu.
The Bottom line is "Check your hardware first if it supports the task you try".

if it boots into safe mode - that's great because you can back up and get your data. (so do that)

That also means XP works but something in the startup does not.

Second run msconfig - disable anything that you do not 100% need.  That may be the issue.

if that doesn;t work you have to start looking at drivers.

The mystery is solved.
The hard drive has completely failed.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
